Description

W'. A.' MUNDY.
SKYLGHT.
APPLIOATION FILED JULY 28,1909` 1,053,633. Patented Feb. 18, 1913.
WILLIAM A. MUN DY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SKYLIGHT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 18,1913.
Application lcd July 28, 1909. Serial No. 510,066.
To all Iwhom it concern Re it known that I, WILLIAM A. NIUNDY, o'l' Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and use- 'lul Imi'novementy in Skylights, whereol the 'following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
It is the object ot my invention to pro vide a translucent cover for root openings, which are ordinarily covered by frames contailiing separate panes ot glass. Such or dinary devices are disadvantageous in that it is practically impossible to prevent seepingl ol' water around the edges ot' the glass panels at the joints iu the trame or sz .h.
A\s hereinafter descrita-d, my invention provides a cover ot the class eontemplaterfl, 't'ormed ot' a single asting ol glass having llanges at its edges respectively littcd tor attaching means and tov direct the water `trom the upper .surface ot the cover beyond said attaching nrtans.
Mv invention includes the various novel 'featuresl ot construction and arrangement hereinafter more definitely specified.
ln the drawing, Figure l is a plan view ot' a skylight conveniently embodying my improvement. Fig. Il is a. trans.'erse sectional view ot said skylight. ltig. lll is a sectional view. .similar tio Fig. ll, but showin t,r a moditied torni ot the invention.
lu said figures: the root l is covered with any suitable waterproof material 2, aud has thtI skylight (mening Si. surrounded by the vertical ilange il.
shown in Figs, l and ll my improved cover includes a plane panel or web ot glass i i havingl the unitary marginal tlange (i de pending transversely with respect to thev mareiins ot Isaid web, si as to direct rain or z other moisture from the upper surtace ot' said web clear ot' the unitary limer attaching tlange T. which as shown in Fig. ll is tilted over the roottlange lwhich has at its upper edge the gasket S upon which said web rests. The bolts 9 \\'hir.liexteiul through said ilanges t and T are provided with nuts l0 so as to detachably secure said lcover in the closed position e-ihown in liigflL 'ihe form ol my invention, above described, provides a cover which is practically hermetically sealed in connection with the roof and ma be conveniently employed upon inclincf7 roofs. However, I tind it: convenient to employ upon flat roofs ay cover which is arched, as indicated in Fig. III, so as to shed water therefrom. Moreover, the cover shown in'Fig. III may be advantageously employed Where it is desired to ventilate a building through the skylight, .said cover having a series of aperturesI ift' in the flange l5 extending above the vertical flange 1G of the roof, but being otherwise constructed and attached like the t'orm olE my invention shownrin Figs. I and Il.
l do not desire to 'limit myself to the preelse details ot construction and arrangement above described, as it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein without depart-ing from the essential features ol' my invention, as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:-
l. In a skylight, a panel ot molded glass having a marginal flange depending transversely with respect to the edges of the panel; a seeoml flange depending approximately parallel with the marginal flange a tores-aid within the latter, and havingopenings Vfor attaching means; and air vent openings in said inner [lange between said openings tor attaching` means and said panel.
In a skylight, a unitary cover formed ot' translucent molded material including a web having a marginal flange extending transversely with respect thereto, anda second flange extendimg` substantially parallel with said marginal flange within the latter and having respective openings for attaching means and constitutingr air vents.
il. 'lhe combination with a roof having an opening with a marginal Hange; ot' a skylight including a web having a depending attaehing tlange arranged to register with said root tlange; an exterior marginal [lange on said web arranged to direct moisture away vl'rom said attaching flange and means extending through said attaching flange on said panel and the flange on said roof, including removable screw threaded members; said. attaching flange on said panel having air vents opening through it between saicl web and the upper edge of` said roof lange.
4,' In a skylight, a panel of translucent material having e marginal flange depending tiansvereely with respect to the edges of the panel; and, attaching means ai'ording air vente beneath said flange.
l venia this tenth day of July, 1909.
