'WFFF STATES PATENT @FFCE FRANKLIN Gr. MCCAULEY, OF GREENWIGH, OHIO.
FOLDING CAR-STEP.
Application led October 17, 1912.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANKLIN G. MCCAULEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenwich, in the county of Huron, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Car-Steps; and I do hereby declare the fol'- lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in steam or electric railway coaches, and has particular reference to an auxiliary step therefor. y
rlhe principal object is to provide a simple device of this character by means of which an auxiliary step may be quickly and easily raised as desired.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and with particular reference to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a fragmentary portion of the rear end of a railway coach illustrating my invention, the step being in lowered position, Fig. 2 is an end view of a portion of the coach showing the stairway, the auxiliary step in lowered position, Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 the stepI being raised, Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the flight of steps, Fig. 5 is a top plan view, Fig. 6 is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1, Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a portion of the auxiliary step showing one of the hangers, Fig. 8 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 8-8 of Fig. 1.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, 10 represents the flight of steps on one side yof a railway coach, 11 being the end wall of the coach and forming one side of the stairway while 12 represents the guard wall at the opposite or outer side of the stairway.
Mounted on the wall of the car, as well as the side wall of the steps, are the guide brackets 13 and slidable through these brackets are the plates 14, the lower end of each of which is bifurcated and provided to form the curved legs 15, a shoulder 16 being Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Feb. 11, i913.
serial No. 726,390.
formed on each side of the plate 14 at the juncture of the plate and legs 15.
Mounted on both the car and the side wall of the step are the outwardly extending lugs 17, which when the steps are lowered will engage respectively the portion of the plate 14 between the legs 15 and the shoulders 16 to support the weight of the parts. Secured to the lower ends of the plates 14 at the outer ends of the legs 15 is the auxiliary tread 18 of the auxiliary step. The upper end of each of the plates 14 is formed with an opening 19 to receive the pivot pins 20, carried by the ends of the brackets 21, one of the pins passing through the lower end of the bar 22, thus holding the upper end of the plates 14 in properly spaced relation. A bar 21 is connected at its opposite ends to the ends of the swinging brackets 21, the said bar being rotatably mounted in the rear portion of the side plates of the steps. The lever 22 extends upon the platform of the car through a slot 23, and formed integrally on the lever 22 is the laterally projecting member 24, which engages with the raised projection 25 on a slotted plate 26 mounted on the platform of the car. The upper end of the lever 22 is provided a handle by means of which the said lever may be raised and lowered. The raising and lowering of this lever, raises and lowers by means of the connections with the spring 14 and the bar 20, the plate 14 and the auxiliary step 18, said tread 18 being drawn up under the tread of the bottom step of the flight.
It will of course, be understood that this auxiliary step can be adapted for use on street railway cars, as well as steam railway coaches.
What is claimed is:
An attachment for railway ear steps, comprising a bracket mounted on the car wall and the side wall of t-he stairway, plates slidable vertically through the brackets, the lower ends of these plates being formed with downwardly and forwardly curved legs, shoulders at the upper ends of the legs, the tread of an auxiliary step secured to the lower ends of the curved legs, laterally projecting pins or lugs on the wall of the car and the wall of the Stairway for engagement with the shoulder and the' portions of the plates between projection for engagement with the projel- 10 the legs, swinging brackets on the sides of tion of the slotted plate, for holding t the stairway, pivotal connections between the swinging brackets and the plates, a slotted plate mounted on the upper end of the stairway, a projecting member in one end of the slot, and a lever pivotally oonneoted to the said bar for raising and lowering the plates, said lever having the lateral parts in elevated position. In testimony whereof, I aiX my signalture, in presence of two witnesses.

H. TRAVIS, D. L. WEBB.
