Referring to the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that this invention comprises a plate 10 having enlarged end portions 11 and 12. The plate is provided at its edges with a flange 13, which {flange holds the plate in spaced relation to the door 14 upon which it is secured; This plate is provided at its end 11 with the angular wings 15 forming pockets in one of which the lock for the knob shaft is mounted. This plate is provided with a wing at each side so that the shaft lock may extend to either side of the shaft opening 16. A plate 1 7 is secured to'the inner face of the plate 10 in one of the wings 15 and extends to a point adjacent the center of the shaft opening 16, the end of the plate being provided with a circular cut-out portion 18 surrounding the opening 16. The plate 17 is provided with side walls 19 having the end portions bent outwardly to form the strips 20 and provided with the openings 21. The plate 17 Specification of Letters Patent.

is secured to the plate 10 by means of the bolts 22 which pass through the openin 21. After the plate 17 is in position, it Will be seen that the plate forms a housin in which thelocking plate 23 fits. This lociing plate is provided with a slot QLat-the open endof the housing and carries a shaft 25 which extends through a slot 26 formed in the plate 10. ThlS slot is rovided with enlarged ends forming soc ets 27 so that the knob 28 which is carried by theshaft 25 may fit into the enlarged end of the slot and I thus be locked in place. The shaft 25 passes through an opening formedin the knob 28, which opening is provided. with enlarged outer end portions 29 and 30.; A'spring- 31 is seated in the enlarged portion 29 and surrounds the shaft 25 and has its outer end bearing against a washer 32, whichis mounted in theend portion 30 .of the open-- ing formed through the knob 28. A screw 33 is carried by the shaft 25 and holds the washer in place so that the spring will bear against the washer and the bottom .of the enlarged portion 29 thus norm'ally holdin the inner end of the knob in the enlarge end 27 of the slot 26. A spacing member 34 has its inner end 35 contracted and secured in theopening 16 and'forms a means for holding the knob 36 spaced from the plate 10 a suflicient distance so that it will not interfere with the operation of'the knobv 28. This knob 36 is secured to the shaft 37,

the shaft 37 passing through the door and havlng a-second knob .38 mounted upon its opposite end portion. It will be noted that the shaft 37 is rectangular in cross section so that when the knob 28 is moved from the position shown in Fig. 1 to the opposite end of the slot 26, the shaft,'will be positioned in the slot 24 and will thus be pre-. ventedfrom turning. It will be noted that the locking means is at the innerside of the door so that after the lock has been moved to a locked position, the knob cannot be turned and the lock cannot'be released from the outside.

.The lower portion 12 of the plate 10 is provided with the side extensions 39 and carries a plate 40, this plate being provided with the side walls il'and securing strips 42 similar to the plate 17. The bolts 43 pass through the strips 42 so that the plate 40 is secured to the plate 10 and forms a housing in which the locking plate 44 is mounted. The plate 10 is provided above the plate 40 with-a key-hole 45 and with a slot 46 having the enlarged ends 47 similar to the slot 26. The plate'44 -is' provided with a slot 48 which is positioned in aline ment with the center of'the upper portion of the key hole so that when the key 49 is inserted in the key hole and turned to the position shown in Fig. 1, the plate may be moved so that the key will be positioned in the slot 48. It will thus be seen that after the plate 40 has been moved to a locked position, the key cannot be turned- From the above description, it will be evident that there has been provided a lock which will securely hold the knob from turning and will engage the key so that the key hole will be plugged thus pre venting the skeleton key from being inserted. Inthe preferred form, the plate 1O is formedfrom sheet metal, but it is obvious that if desired the plate may be formed from any suitable cast material such for instance as brass or any other suitable material.

What is claimed is 1..A device of the character described comprising a plate having side wings extending from one end portion and provided with a shaft opening adjacent-said wings and with a slot having enlarged ends in one of said wings, a plate secured to the inner face of said first-mentioned plateand having its central portion spaced-from said first-mentioned plate to form a housing, a locking plate slidably mounted in said housing and adapted to be moved across the shaft opening of said first mentioned plate, the outer end portion of said locking plate being provided with a longitudinally extending slot, a shaft extending from said locking plate through the slot in said firstmentioned plate, a knob mounted upon the outer end portion of said shaft having'its inner end reduced to fit in the enlarged ends of said slot, said knob'being provided with a central opening through which said shaft passes having enlarged outer end portions forming a spring housing, and a" washer housing, a spring positioned in said spring housing and. surrounding said shaft, a washer at the outer end of said spring positioned in said washer housing, means carried by said shaft for holding said spring and washer in place, the opposite end portion of said first-mentioned late being provided with a key-hole, and means carried by said first-mentioned plate for looking a key in said key hole.

2. A device of the character described comprising a plate having side wings ex-'- tending from one end portion, a housing secured to the inner face of said plate, said plate and housing being provided with key holes formed in alinement and said plate provided with a slot positioned adjacent the key 'holes, said slot being provided with enlarged end portions, a plate slidably mounted in said housing and provided with a slot adapted to receive a key when said plate is moved across the key hole, a shaftextending from said plate through said slot, a knob mounted upon said shaft having itsinner end adapted to fit within the enlargedend of said slot, a spring mounted in said knob around said shafts, and a washer carried by said shaft and engaging the upper end of said spring to normally hold said knob in the enlarged ends of said slot.

3. In a device of the character described, a plate provided with an o ning and with a slot formed adjacent said opening and provided with enlarged end portions, a housing secured to one-face of said plate, a locking plate mounted in said housing and adapted to be moved across saidopening to lock a shaft therein, a shaft extending from said locking plate through said slot, a knob slidably mounted upon said shaft andadapted ,to fit into the enlarged ends of said slot to hold said locking plate in an adjusted position, and resilient means for normally holding said knob in position to lock said shaft at one end of said slot.
