Description

M; LAGHMAN. METALLIC FABRIC FOR FENCES AND OTHER STRUCTURES. APPLIGATIONTILBD NOVA, 1910.

JEITIJESSES INVENTOR cl? QM Lecniuen, or new YonK, N; Y.
I 33FREE.l-Lit 'li FABRIC F63. FENCES AND OTHER STRUCTURES.
4 A .il t c hifiti suitable :ior fences, grills, partitions, grating, concrete reinforcements and a variety of other purposes.
Cue oi the objects of the invention is to produce a metallic fabric of intersecting members and to secure them together by means which will effectively prevent Water or moisture getting at the places of intersection, and thus preventing rust at said other object to provide a metallic 3 clip which may be compressed under can great pressure around the said inemoers at assembled before of intersection and savaged into interstices and corners formed by the nt-ersection or the members to form a rigiti structure With the elements pressed into substantially homogeneous mass at the place intersection, without weakening any of the elements.
Ai'iotheriobject is to produce a fabric of maximum strength While being: comparatively light and which economically produced.
@ther objects will appear from the here; inofter description.
The invention will he understood from the description taken in connection Withthe accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 the pieces ring the fabric being shown on a smaller scale than in the other figures. View of the intersecting members and, fastoning clip of the finished fabric. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 ofFig. F t is a view similar to 2 with the iii-stoning clip provided with tins. Fig. 5 is a section on lineo' of Fi e 4. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one form' of the locking clip. Fi 7 a perspective View showing the intersecting members andthe clip illustrated in. Fig. 6, they are swaged together to form the finished fabric. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a slightly modified form of clip. TfQiQFEEJfi'SiLlVQ view showing Specification of Letters latent.

.intersecting members and the clip illustrated in Fig; 8, assembled, before being. singed together.
The same reference character indicates the same part in the several views of the so drawing.
The cross members consist of thewires A. and H which are here shown of diti'erent although they inay be of the same size.
l'i'hiie they are shown as circular in crossmay be of other suitable shape well as size. Preferably, each of these wires are crimped to form 'oiisets a and 2), respectively, at the nlace of intersection, al-.
section, i'zh' though in some constructions only one of '70 the Wires may be offset, and in other constructions both Wires may be without offsets. These oii'set-s may be placed in both Wires, A and B, before they are asseinbleiil, as
shown by Fig. 6, or the effects may be placed in only one Wire, it, as shown by Fig. 5), and the ofl'sets in the Wile B, may be formed when the clip s'wagecl around the two wires att-he'place of intersection to lock the parts together.
The lockihg clip C is made of hard, ductile metal preferably sheet steel, capable of being bent in the form' desired, as here shown U-shaped, and adapted to be molded or swaged under great pressure. C of the clip are provided with the holes or openings 0, here shown as circular, but may be of any shape suitable to receive the member B. A slot may extend from each of saidopenings 0, to the "free end of each for example, is placed between the sides (1 of the clip and at the bottom thereof With the offset a under the holes; 0. The other Wire B is inserted through the slots c be tween the fingers c and into the'opening c,
with its offset 7) interlocking with the offset a, in the Wire A. The parts, are shown in Fig; 7. As thus assembled, the parts are placed. between dies or swaging blocks having suitable forms therein, which are forced together, and great pressure is applied to compress together the wires at the point of intersection, to force the metal of the clip into-angles or spaces 20 formed by the Wires A. and B, and tightly around the wires at 2 1, and into the interstices formed by the intersection of the WlIES.
The sides 85 thus assembled,
This substantially joins the clip together as though it were an integral piece and also joins it to the intersecting wires and the Wires tlleinselrcs into a compact, rigid, sub-- S(-'....1S or openings through which water or moisture can reach the wires where they in tel-sect to cause rust. The dies may be and are preferably formed so that the finished joint will be synnnetricul on each side. They vided with an offset 1), as shown in Fig. 7,
is then inserted a suitable distance through the openings 0 in said clip. When the parts are thus assembled, and as shown by Fig. 9, the dies are forced together and the parts compressed and swagecl as hereinbcfore clescribed. During the operation of swaging, the wire B may be and preferably is pressed against the wire A with such force that on xLiolly integral body, leaving no joint-s,
offset is formed in the Wire B, which interlooks with. the offset a. a
Having now described any invention,
what I claim as new and. desire to secure by Letters latent is:
1. A metallic fabric for fences and other structures, consisting of intersecting members, and :1 clip surrounding the members at each. place of intersection, said clip and members at the place of intersection being compressed to form substantially a homogeneous joint. l
2. A metallic fabric consisting of intersecting members, and a clip surrounding the members at each place of intersection, said clip and members at the place of intersecr tion being compressed to form substantially a homogeneous joint, said joint provided with fins projecting therefrom between and in the plane of the members.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand at Long Island City, county of Queens and State of New York, this 26th day of October, 1910.
MAURICE LAGHMAN.
In presence of RneINALn HAWLEY, MARGARET KELLEY.
