COLLAPSIBLE IPOULTRY-COOP.
Specification of 'Letters Patent.
Patented J all. 21, 1913.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, JACOB M. SCHNEBLY and JAMES C. BEARD, citizens of the United States, residing at Kahoka, in the county of Clark and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Poultry-Coops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
@ur invention relates to new and useful improvements in the art known as care of live stock and more particularly to a poultry coop, and our object is to provide a device of this character which is collapsible, whereby the same may be compactly folded for shipment and readily cleaned when desired.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a device provided with beaded slip joints, whereby the walls thereof may be interlocked, and a still further object resides in providing a device having vertically movable end walls and a longitudinally slidable bottom thereon.
Another -obj ect of the invention resides in providing means on the lower edges of the side and end walls of the device for slidably retaining the bottom to the device, and still. another object resides in providing a device which is extremely simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be very eiiicient and useful in operation. l
With these and other objects in view, our invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, Figure l is a perspective view of the device set up. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section therethrough. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section through the device. Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section, and, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the slidable caps or locking strips used for securing the upper edges of the side and top walls together. y
we shall In carrying out our invention, refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which- 1 and 2 indicate the side walls of our improved device, while 8 and A indicate the upwardly converging top \walls, said top and side walls being all formed of a single sheet of metal, and the side edges of the side walls and the similar edges of said top walls are rolled outwardly to form the rolled beads 5 and 6, respectively. The
Ilower edges of the side walls are also rolled inwardly to form similar beads 7, said latter beads being extendedjust below the lower edge of the beads 5 on the side edges of said side walls.
The end walls 8 and 9 each have the side edges thereof provided with inwardly rolled beads 10 and 11, respectively, which are designed to slidably receive therein, the outwardly turned beads on the side edges of the side walls 1 and 2, and the upper edges of said end walls, which are inclined coincident to the inclination of the top walls 3 and 4: of the device, are provided with outwardly rolled beads 12 and 18, respectively, said beads on the upper edges of the end walls being adapted to abut andaline with the beads 6 on the edges of the top walls 3 and 4, when said end walls are properly positioned. The end wall 8 which, for convenience, may be termed the front wall of the device, is slightly shorter than the op' posed end wall, or what may be termed the rear wall9, and the lower edges of""'said walls 8 and 9 are provided with inwardly rolled beads 11i and 15, respectively, the bead 15 being disposed in the same horizontal plane as the beads 7 on the lower edges of the side walls, while the bead 1li is disposed in a plane just above the same. A bottom 16 which is adapted to be slidably disposed in the device from the. end having the wall 8 thereon, is provided on its longitudinal side edges with the downwardly rolled beads 17 which are adapted to be received by the upwardly or inwardly rolled beads 7 on the lower edges of the side walls 1 and 2. rl`he inner end edge of the bottom 16 is adapted to rest upon the bead 15 of the end wall 9, while the opposite or o-uter end edge of the bottom is provided with a downwardly rolled bead 18 which corresponds with the bead 15 at the opposite end of the device when the bottom is properly positioned therein and forms a handle member or finger piece for said bottom, whereby the latter may be readily positioned or removed, as desired.
As before stated, the beads 12 and 13 at the upper edges of the walls 8 and 9, re-
' same, and as said door spectively, are'adapted to aline with the beads 6 at the ends of the top walls 3 and 4, when said end walls are properly positioned, and in order to lock the upper edges of the side and top walls together, we provide the slidable locking caps or strips 19. These strips provide flat metallic members, the side edges of which are rolled inwardly toward one another to form the beads 20, which beads are adapted to receive therein, the abutting beads of the side and top walls, and in order to provide a perfect fit at the abutting ends of these strips, the same are beveled at the inner ends, as shown at 21.
The one end wall 9, or what may be termed the rear wall of the device, has an opening or window 22 formed therein by the striking o-utof a portion of the same, said opening being covered by a wire mesh or the like to permit air to readily enter the housing and at the same time preventing the entrance of animals or the like therethrough. The opposite or front wall 8 is provided with an opening 23 forming a doorway therein, and we have provided a slidable door 24 to cover the same. This door 24 has an opening therein which is covered by a screen or the like, and the side edges of the door are provided with outwardly rolled beads 25. These beads 25 are received in the rolled beads 26 which are secured to the outer face of the wall 8 on opposite sides of the door-way 23, and as the door 24 is provided with a finger piece or handle member 27, it will be appreciated that said door may be readily raised or lowered, as desired. While the door 24 forms a closure for the opening 23, it will be appreciated that air may be allowed to ent-er through the screen opening therein, but in order to entirely close the opening so as to even prevent light and air entering therethrough, we provide the additional slidable door 28 which is disposed immediately in the rear of the door 24. This door 28 is provided with an outwardly curved portion 29 which forms a handle member for the 28 is guided between the beads 26 and is held against the wall 8 by means of the door 24, it will be appreciated that the same may be securely retained in position and may be readily moved vertically of said wall.
Assuming that the device is properly set up for operation and it is desired to knock the same down for cleaning purpose or any other purpose, the bottom 16 is first withdrawn by drawing outwardly upon the outwardly curved bead 18 thereof which forms a handle member for the same. The locking caps or strips 19 are then withdrawn outwardly from the beads on the top and end walls, whereupon the end walls 8 and 9 are drawn downwardly to disengage the interlocking beads of said end and side walls.
scribed the elements The only remaining portion which is set up will then be the side and top walls which are formed of a single sheet of metal, and the end walls, the bottom and the locking strips 19 may be disposed within this'formation of side and top walls and the device stowed away or cleaned, as desired. It will be appreciated that in setting up the device, the parts are applied in the reverse order in which they are removed, and when entirely set up, it will be seen that a perfectly collapsible and sanitary poultry coop will be provided.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that we have provided a simple, inexpensive and eliicient means for carrying out the objects of this invention, and while we have demost well adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacriiicing any of the principles of the invention.
