JOHN H, TH'WAITES, OF LONGON, ENGLAND.
REFSE-DESTRUCTOB FURNACE.
To'all wlzom it may concern A Be it Vknown that I, JOHN HUBERT lTximlrrns, a subject of the King of Great Britgin, residing at Clock House, Arundel street, Strand,A London, England, engineer, haveln'vented new and useful Improvements in Kekse-Destructor Furnaces, of which the 'following is a specication.
.M invention relates t0 an improved form of t ose., refusedestructor furnaces which 'are providedwith a plurality of grate cells and separate ashpits for each cell and with a hollow furnce front surrounding the iring and clinkering openings of the grate cells, said hollow furnace fronts communl caring withfthe ashpits'of said cells and .ing perforations through which the air heated in Said fronts passes to the furnace.
A single 'ate'cell of the improved refuse destructor furnace of my invention is illusi trated moreparticularly in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1. sliws a sectional plan viewof a continuous grate system and combustion chamber, in which the grate cells ure separated by air cooledtroughs; Fig'. 2 shows a section on the lines A-B of Fig. l; Fig` 3 shows a detail "iew of u separating trough; Fig. 4 show-s a sectional side View, partly broken away, through a single grate cell on the line A-TB of Fig. 5; Fig. shows an internal front view on the line C-D of Fig-4, and Fig. 6 shows a plan View, partly broken away, of 4. i
As illustrated I construct the arched hars 17 and supporting jam blocks l0 of the firing :mdv'clinkering openings to the grate ccllsof hollow castings l() provided with peri'orations 11 facing away from the elinkering doors 1.2, shown in dotted lines in Figs. 4 and 6. These hollow castings 10 are Specification of Letters Patent.

in communicatieve; with the ashpits of thenP grates through ihe dperling 13 under the dead plates 14, so tluitn proportion of the air used to force the draft passes through said castings 10 and disclmrges through said perfor-ations 11, thus keeping said castings reasonably cool and supplying at Vthe same time a small supply of consequently hot air to insure perfect combustion above the fire. The castings which forni the jam blocks of said firing and clinkering openings com xnunicatc with the perforated inverted troughs 3 lining the grate cellsV through the passages 16. The insides of said troughs are open to the ashpits 2 while thc air pass` ing from the ashpit's through the perforations 4 in the sides of said troughs help the combustion of the fuel upon thegratcs 1.
Vhat I claim is:
\ In a refuse destructor furnace the combi nation of a plurality of grate cells with the tiring and clinkering openings with separate ashpits for each of said grate cells, hollow arched bars and supporting jam blocks surrounding the tiring and clinkeringopenings of said cells,`said hollow arched bars and supportin jam blocks being provided with air holes acing away from said firing and clinkering openings and with passages connecting the interior of said jam blocks with
