UNITED STATES PATENT @FFIQE.
WILLIAM MARION SHEARER, OF YORK, NORTH DAKOTA.
WHIPPING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TVILLIAM M. SHEARER, a citizen of the United States, residing at York, in the county of Benson, State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whipping Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in whipping devices, and has particular reference to a whip operating device for whipping the horses of the lead team which are beyond reach of the driver with the ordinary whip.
The principal objectof the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple of construction and which may be quickly and easily operated.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and with particular reference to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a top plan view showing the device in operation, Fig. 2 is a front elevation, Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, the clip 28 not being shown, Fig. 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line H of Fig. 3, Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the end of the tongue on which are mounted the whips, and Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 66 of Fig. 1.
Referring particularly to the drawings, 10 represents a vehicle, and 10 the pole thereof. Bolted to the outer end of the tongue, to the upper and lower faces respectively, are the plates 11 and 12, which project a suitable distance beyond the pole, as shown, the outer ends of said plates being provided with bolt openings. Secured to the extension of the plate 12 is a smaller plate 15, which has an offset portion 16 extending midway between and parallel with the extensions of the plates 11 and 12, the end of said offset being provided with a bolt opening 17 registering with the openings of the plates 11 and 12. A pair of whip holding socket members 18 Specification of Letters Patent.

and 19 are provided, the former of which being disposed between the plate 11 and the extension 16 while the holder 19 is disposed between the extension 16 and the plate 12, the bolt 20 being passed through said plates and extension, and the whip holders 18 and 19, so that the said whip holders, are pivotally mounted to swing horizontally on the forward end of the pole 10.
Secured to the inner end of each of the whipholders 18 and 19 is a coil spring 21, each of which has its opposite end secured to the pole, as indicated in the drawings. Near the other end of the whipholders are secured the springs 22, which are likewise secured at their other ends to the pole. To the inner end of the holder 18 is secured one end of a cord or wire 23, which extends along the pole and into the wagon within convenient reach of the driver Where it is provided with a handle 24. To the inner end of the holder 19 is secured a similar cord or wire 25, which extends to within reach of the driver and has a handle 26 thereon.
Connected to the forward end of the draft rod 81 Fig. 1 is a clip 28 to which is attached a whiflietree 29 for attachment of the lead horses.
By pulling or erking suddenly on one or the other of the cords, accordingly to the horse it is desired to whip, one of the hold ers 18 or 19 will be thrown forwardly, so that the lash of the whip 30 will strike the horse in the rear.
With the ordinary whip, it is difficult, and often impossible to reach the lead horses without walking forward on the tongue between the rear horses, which is a great inconvenience, and often endangers the life of the driver. My device overcomes these defects, so that the driver may control the entire team from his seat.
What is claimed is In a whipping device, the combination with a pole, of plates secured to the pole and extending forwardly from the end thereof, a bracket secured between the plates and secured to one of said plates, whipholders pivotally mounted between the plates and the bracket springs secured to the holders at In testimony whereof, I atlix my signnopposite sides of the pivots of the holders, 1 ture, in presence of two Witnesses.
S2116. sprlngs being attached also to the TILLIAM MARION SHEARER tongue, cords secured to the rear ends of] the holders, said cords extending to within lVitnesses: convenient reach of the driver, and handles E. C. RUDE, on the rear ends of the cords. l FRANK FAY.
Copies of this patent may he obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Vifashington, 33. G.
