To all whom .may concern:
e it lmou'fnthet l, FRANK V, liismeun, a citizen of the 'United States, vresiding' at Youngstown, in the eountyot Mahoning and State of ftvlii'o, have invented u' new und 'useful Chisp, o'- W'hich the following is specification. 1
The devicel forming the subject-metter of this application, is adapted to he employed for' maintaining u globe in u globe-holder.-
The invention anne to provide a novel term of cuni lever, uduptecl to engage the globe,y undv to provide a novel form ot spring ineens which Will zit once reinforce the globe support and constitute e ineens for mointaining the globe-engaging finger of the lever in globe-engaging.position A further object of the invention is to provide novel menne for supporting u globe' upon opposite sides oi? :l diameter passing through the globe-engaging' finger oi' the cemlever, et point opposite to the globe engaging finger.
` A further object of the invention is t0 improve generell-y, devices of that typeto which the present invention epperteins.
With the i''oregoingl und other objects in View, which will appear :au the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination und a-rrengen'ient of parte und in the `details oit construction hei'einuitter lesei'ibctl und claimed, it being' understood the; chunges in l' ie ircoise embodiment of invention herein disc oserl con mode Within the scope ot what s claimed iv'ithouty departing from the spirit of the invention. v-
in the accompanying druwings,-.llignre l shows in transverse section u globe-holder equipped with the devices constituting the Subjectfinutter of the present invention; Fig. 2 is :i` section of the supporting mecha,- nis-rn for the cem lever, the com lever being depicted in globo-ennui,Qing` position; Fig. 3 is wsection upon the lino 3---3 ot' Fig. f2; Fig. 4 is u. detail perspective ot' the globeengug'ing' member uudits controlling und supper-tin l -etruoture Which appears in Fig- 2.
u eide elevation showing u, inodilied form of tue intention, log. tl ie en elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 8, the view point in et.
tl 1g. being -ut right angles to the View point 1n 131g. 8; and Fig. it() ist perspective ot the `globe support employed 1n that form Fig'. 8 is ot' the invention which is shown in Figs. 8'
ln carrying out the invention 'there is provided o globe support i which muy beef any torni. Within the gl giobe 2 ie located. About ite periphery, the globe 2 equipped with the usuel depression 3, which, Cooperating with suitable obo-support i, u'
menne located upon the giohe-support t..
serves, to retain the globe .in position Within the @lobe-support.
W ien the globe-Support 1 is fashioned from relatively` thin material, :i pair oit spaced thimhlee Ll nmv be inounted in the support, these thiinbles receiving adjusting serene 5, equipped at their outer endel with .suitable bends t3, there being locking nuts t upon the screws 5, it'or the obvious purpose of holdingthe soroive against rot utiou. The screws :le will be und eietood readily, 'from nu inspection ot Fig. l, :ire udupted to engage spaced points upon the globe 2, to hold the globe, in cooperation 'with inunuully op ei'uhle, oppositcly disposed ineens Whioh will he described heieiuu'lter.
The globusuppoi't t is provided, prefetti ably ut u point opposite to the Screws ti, with :in openingi 8. A buse 9, preferably of oui'vilineiir torni, is provided, the buse 9 having' projecting curs 10, between which is locol'ed u longitudinally extended opening l1, prolonged entirely through the base 9'. ln the under i'uce of the buse 9 there is u transverse bearing recess i2, intersecting the opening il.
interposed between the buse 9 sind the flobc support l is a, spring plete 1i, haw ing un opening '14, of substantially the suine :treu :is the openingr 8 in the globe-support t. Seoul-inf.;- bolts 15 unite the globeeup port it with tho ends of the spring pluto 14 und with the ends of the buse 9, the heads 1G ot the bolts preferably being countersuoli into the iuucr.'t`uee of the globe-sup port' l. the bolts' oufi'ying :it their outer ends, nutsl 1T, adopted to tnguge the outer fece ot" the buse t); although, obviouely, any
other 'suitable means muy be provided tot' lOlS holding the support 1, the spring plate 14 and the base 9 together.
The invention vfurther includes a cam lever 18, mounted in the base 9,v to swing in the direct-ion of the length of the base. The cam lever 18 is equipped with a transverse cam shaft 19, journaled in the bearing recess 12, and held therein by the spring plate 14. The cam shaft 19 is equipped with a cam edge 20, adapted to engage the spring` plate 14, upon both sides of the opening 14a therein, to putthe spring plate under ten- Sion. The camshaft 19 is provided with a flat face 20a, having functions which will be set forth hereinafter. Projecting from the r,intermediate portion of the cam shaft 19 is a globe-engaging finger 21, adapted to protrude through the opening 8 in the globe y support 1, so as to engage the globe 2. When the finger 21 is in the globe-engagingposition shownv in Fig. 2, the spring plate 14 will lie along the flat face 20, holding the Enger in globe-engaging position, it being obvious that when the cam lever is swung into the position shown in Fig. 2, the cam edge 2O will engage the spring 'plate 14, and put the same under tension.
As will be readily understood, the finger 21 is adapted to engage the globe 2 in the depression 3.
The spring plate 14 serves to reinforce .the globessupport ,1, upon both sides of the opening 8, so' that the support will not be bent unduly by the action of the cam shaft 19. When the cam lever 18 is swung upon. its fulcrum, to move the finger 21 out of globe-engaging position, the nger will be housed in the opening 11 in the base 9. As clearly shown in Fig. 1, the screws 5 are adapted to engage the globe 2 upon opposite sides of a diameter passing through lin- .ger 21, and thus a three-point support for the globeV is provided. Moreover, the screws 5 may be adjusted, and may be held in adusted positions by means of the locknuts to accommodate diameters.
If desired, the device may be modiiied as shownv in Fig. 7. In this structure, the gflobe-supportsis denoted by the numeral 22,
globes of diiferent and to the inner face thereof-is applied a bar 23, held in place adjustably for 'movement toward and away from the holder 22 ceiving a screw 30. Mounted to swing on the screw 30 is a cam lever 31, having a finger piece 32 and cam head 33. The opi eration of the structure shown in Figs. 8, 9 and-10 will be readily understood from what has been said heretofore with respect to the cam lever 18 and attendant parts, it being understood that the lever 31 is employed for the same purpose as is the cam lever 18. The spring means for controlling the movement ot' the cam lever 31 comprises a helical spring which surrounds the screw 30 and Y abuts at one end against thehead of the screw, the other end' of the helical spring bearing against the cam lever 3l, to thrust the same against the lug 28. The structure shown in Fig.v 9 may be combined with the opposed globe engaging means of Fig. 1 or Fig. 7
Havingthus described the invention, what is claimed is In a device of the class described, a globesupport; a cam lever mounted to swing upon the globe-support; globe-engaging means positioned upon the support oppositeto the cam lever; and a device for holding the globe-engaging means spaced at adjusted distances with respect to the cam lever.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
