Be it known that I, J OSEPII A. DINKLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at A11- adarko, in the county of Gaddo and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Imprcwements in Display-Easels, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to display packages and has particular application to certain novel and useful improvements in a combined package and easel for displaying goods.

In carrying out my invention, it is my purpose to provide a package or box, formed from a single piece of material such as card board, paste board, straw board or the like which is scored in such manner that it may be folded into the shape of a box or package for containing a number of smaller articles or packages for shipment or storage, and when desired, the package or box may be unfolded in such manner as to form an easel for the smaller articles or packages contained therein.

It is also my purpose to provide an article of the class described which may be manufactured and sold at a relatively low cost, and which will embrace the desired features of simplicity, convenience and effectiveness, the box or package securely retaining the articles for storage or transportation or the like, and yet forming a neat, effective and convenient easel when it is desired to display the articles for sale.

WVith the above recited and other objects of a similar nature in View, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings:-Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank composing my package. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, showing the package or boxing containing smaller packages and partially folded. Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing the package in completely folded position ready for storage or shipment. Fig. 4 is a perspective view, showing the package forming an easel or display rack.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the letter A designates the blank from which my combined package and easel is formed, said blank being of any suitable material such as paste board, straw board or the like. This blank is formed of Specification of Letters Patent.

a relatively long, rectangular body portion which is scored transversely as at 1 to form a central fold which constitutes the top edge of the easel when the package is arranged as is shown in Fig. 4. To the right side of this score line 1 are the two parallel transverse scorings 2-2, the portion of the blank therebetween forming one of the ends of the box when the package is folded. Adjacent to the right edge of the blank, the latter is provided with the transverse scoring 5, the portion (5 of the blank between the scoring and the extreme edge of the blank bein provided with extensions or flaps 7-? which flaps are scored or folded as at 8 and provided with locking tongues S-8'. Arranged parallel with the score line 5 and spaced apart therefrom a distance preferably equal to the depth of the package is a second score line 10 which also extends transverse of the right side of the blank. The portion of the blank 11 between the parallel scorings 5 and 10 is of the same width as the portion 3, the arrangement of the blank at this point being that a relatively wide approximately centrally located portion 12 of the blank lies between one of the score lines 2 and the score line 10, this space being approximately equal in width to the length of two of the packages. This portion 12 is provided with the oppositely disposed slots l3-13 arranged adjacent to the ends thereof and adapted to receive the locking tongues 9-9 of the extension 7.

From the description so far given the arrangement of folding of theright side of the package is as follows: The extensions 7 are folded inwardly and vertically on the short transverse score lines 77' so that they will extend vertically, and the tongues are then bent inward at an angle on the score lines 8 so that said tongues may he slipped into the adjacent slots 13. The packages in the present instance of box like form are placed in rows, end-to-end upon the central portion 12. The blank is folded upon the lines 10 and 2, so that the boxes are held at their ends between the portions 3 and 11, as will be seen by reference to Fig. 2.

The blank is further provided to the left of line 1, with the side wings 1414 formed by the longitudinal score lines 15-45, said wings 14 being further provided with flap extensions 16-16 bent upon the score lines l7--17. Adjacent to this left end the blank is provided with transversely extending score lines 18 and 19, forming a space 20 equal in width to the spaces 11 and 3. The left side of the blank, as indicated in the drawings is further scored to provide the section 21 which is provided with extensions 2222 scored as at 2323 and having locking tongues 2t24c formed by the score lines 25-25.

The manner of folding and utilizing the blank to make a package is as follows Assuming the blank to be properly scored or lined, and to be flat as is shown in Fig. 1, the right end of the blank is folded upon the line 5 and then upon the line 10, and the extensions 7 hold it down vertically and the tongues bend inwardly and slip in the slots 13. The left end of the blank is then similarly treated, being folded first upon the line 19 so that the portion 20 extends vertically and then upon the line 18 so that the end portion 21 projects inwardly. The side extensions 22 are then folded downward upon the lines 23 and the tongues 24 bent inward at the lines 25 and inserted in the oppositely disposed slots 26 so that the blank has now the appearance shown in Fig. 2. Assuming the package to be designed to hold 12 of the small cartons, two rows of the latter of four each are placed end-to-end upon the flat portion 12 to-the right of the blank, the outer end of the outside rows extending beneath and being held by a folded end of the blank. Similarly a single row of the cartons (four deep), is placed at the opposite or left end of the blank and beneath the folded portion shown in Fig. 2. The blank is now folded on the lines 22 to form the outside end 2 of the entire package, and then the portion of the package containing the double row of cartons is folded down against the body of the blank so that the packages all form continuous rows as shown in Fig. 3. The wings 1A are then folded upward at the sides upon the lines 15 and 17 and the flaps 16 tucked in between the packages and the adjacent faces of the package. The completely folded package now has the appearance as shown in Fig. 3, all the smaller cartons being securely and firmly held in position so that a neat, attractive and easily handled package is formed.

When the merchant desires to use the pack age as a display easel, the side wings and flaps are withdrawn and the package unfolded to the position shown in Fig. 2. The two sections are then folded outward and downward upon the central line 1 so that an easel or stand is formed with the folded ends of the blank making the base. The flaps or wings are then folded in between the two vertically extending members of the easel and fastened by small clips or fasteners f, the wings tending to reinforce and stiffen the easel.

I claim 1. A display package comprising a blank including a body portion scored to form the opposite ends of the package, extensions at the edge of the blank provided with wings adapted to engage with the adjacent sides of the package, side wings extending from the ends of the blank and adapted to be folded upward and having tongues designed to be folded inward to meet the adjacent face of the blank to form sides therefor at the ends of the package, said blank being further scored approximately centrally whereby it may be folded back and opened to constitute a display stand or easel, the opposite sides of the package being folded back to back.

A display package comprising a blank scored at the end portions and designed to be folded in opposite directions at such ends to constitute the ends of the package and form oppositely disposed package containing pockets, said blank being further scored longitudinally to form side wings for the package, and a central score line upon which the blank may be folded to constitute a display stand with the packages supported by the end pockets which also constitute the base of the stand, the side wings being folded inward to reinforce the stand.

3. A display package comprising a blank scored at the end portions and designed to be folded in opposite directions at such end portions to constitute the ends of the package and form package containing pockets opening onto each other or in opposite directions and spaced apart, said blank being scored transversely approximately cent-rally of its length whereby the adjacent sides of the blank may be folded one upon the other with the pockets in spaced relation and opening in the same direction, said blank being further provided with a score line spaced a suitable distance from the lastmentioned score line whereby the adjacent sides of the blank may befolded back to back to constitute a display stand with the packages supported by the end pockets which also constitute the base of the stand.
