TYPE-WRITER SUPPORT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH M. BAINER, HARRY R. SPURLING, and ARCHIE W. SPUR- LING, citizens of the United States, residing at Marysville, in the county of Union and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type- Writer Supports, of which the following is a speci fication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to typewriter supports and the object of the invent-ion is to provide a support of this character which can be mounted beneath a desk of ordinary construction and will enable the typewriter to be depressed and moved into a position beneath the desk where it will not interfere with the usual use of the desk, or to be moved outward and upward into an operative position in front of the desk, thus avoiding the necessity of making a portion of the top of the desk movable, as is now customary, and enabling a solid top desk to be provided with a typewriter support.
To this end it is a further object of the invention to slidably mount a frame on the pedestals, or supporting members, of the desk and to mount a supporting platform on said frame in such a manner that it can be depressed and elevated.
It is also an object of the invention to provide such a support which can be readily attached to desks already in use without alteration thereof; and further, to, provide such a device which will be very simple in its construction and operation and of a strong and durable character.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a typewriter support embodying our invention showing the same applied to a double pedestal desk; Fig. 2 is a transverse, sectional view of a desk showing the typewriter support in elevation and in a position to support the typewriter beneath the desk; and Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the typewriter support in a position to support the typewriter in an operative position.
In these drawings we have illustrated two embodiments of our invention. The main features of construction and operation in both forms are the same. In each instance the typewriter is supported in such a manner that it can be moved downward and rearward to a point beneath the desk where Specification of Letters Patent.

it will not interfere with the ordinary use of the desk. When it is desired to use the typewriter the same is drawn forward and I upward into an operative position and is retained in this position. In each form of the device here shown we have provided a supporting frame which is slidably mounted on the supporting members for the desk. In the present instance we-have shown the invention as applied to a double pedestal desk in which the pedestals constitute the sup porting members and the supporting frame is mounted on the inner walls of the pedestals. A typewriter supporting device, such as a platform, is mounted on the frame and is capable of vertical movement relatively thereto. Thus, the frame and the platform may be drawn outward and the platform then elevated to a position in front of the desk and at the proper level to support the typewriter at the desired height. In the two forms of devices here shown we have illustrated two of the many methods of carrying out the invention.
In Figs. 1, 2 and 8 we have shown the device applied to a flat top desk 1 comprising two pedestals 2 which constitute the supporting members therefor. A supporting frame comprising side bars or guide members 3 is slidably mounted on suitable tracks 4;, which, in the present instance, consist of bars rigidly secured in substantially horizontal positions to the inner walls of the pedestals at points near the upper ends thereof, the guide members 3 being grooved to receive the tracks 4. The device upon which the typewriter is mounted consists of a supporting plat-form 5, the forward portion of which is slidably and pivotally mounted upon the sliding frame. In the form here shown each side of the forward portion of the platform 5 has rigidly secured thereto a plate 6 provided with a longitudinal slot 7 into which extends a pin 8 mounted in the adjacent frame member 3. The rear end of the platform 5 is so supported from the frame that it is capable of vertical movement relatively thereto. As here shown, each side of the rear portion of the platform is pivotally connected to one end of a lever 9 which is pivotally supported from the sliding frame at a point below the frame members 3, upon which the forward portion of the platform is mounted. In the present instance each frame member 3 is provided with a depending bracket 10 on the lower end of which the lever 9 is pivotally mounted. The distance between the pivotal connections of the levers to the brackets 10 and their points of connection to the platform 5 is substantially equal to the distance between the pivotal centers of the levers and the upper portions of the side members 3. Consequently, when these levers are in a substantially vertical position with those'ends thereof which are connected to the platform 5 uppermost, the platform will be supported in a substantially horizontal position. When the position of the levers is substantially reversed the rear end of the platform will be depressed a considerable distance below the forward end thereofand the typewriter, which is mounted on the platform, will be depressed below the level of the top of the desk,thereby enabling the platform, and the frame 011 which it is mounted, to be moved beneath the top of the desk or to be withdrawn from beneath the same. The levers 9 extend some distance beyond their points of pivotal connection to the brackets 10 and are provided at their rear ends with a counterweight. In the present instance a single weight 11 is connected to the two levers. This weight tends to counterbalance the weight of the machine on the platform and to facilitate the operation of the supporting device.
lVhen the supporting device is in the position shown'in Fig. 2 and it is desired to use the typewriter, the forward end of the platform 5, which is near the front of the desk, is grasped by the operator and a forward pull exerted thereon. This will cause the frame as a whole and the latform which is carried thereby to move orward on the tracks 4 until the stops 12 carried by the frame members 3engage cooperating stops 13 on the supporting members for the desk. When the movement of the frame as a whole is checked a continued pull on the platform will cause the platform to move forward relatively to the frame, the slotted bars 6 sliding on the pins 8 mounted in the side members of the frame. This forward movement of the platform relatively to the frame causes the levers 9 to move about their pivotal centers and elevate the rear end of the platform, the weight 11 facilitating this movement of the platform and completing the movement after the rear end of the platform has passed a central position. After the levers 9 have assumed a substantially vertical position with the typewriter in a position to be operated a slight rearward thrust on the platform will throw the points of connection of the levers 9 to the platform 5 in the rear of the points of connection of those levers to the brackets 10. This rearward movement of the platform may be limited in any suitable manner. If desired the typewriter itself may engage the front edge of the desk and when the typewriter is in this position it will be apparent that the platform is locked both against rearward movement and against downward movement and a rigid support is provided for the typewriter. To return the typewriter to its idle or inoperative position the platform 5 is given a slight forward pull to move the upper ends of the levers 9 in front of their points of connection to the brackets 10 and then the forward edge of the platform is moved upward and the rear end depressed. When the platform 5 has assumed the position shown in Fig. 2 the frame as a whole is pushed rearward and the typewriter and its supporting devices moved into position where they will not interfere with the use of the desk as such. Owing to the inclined position of the platform 5 a comparatively small amount of sliding movement will place the same in a position where it will not interfere with the ordinary use of the desk.
It will be apparent that the device is a very simple one, very easy to operate and will support the typewriter either in an operative position or in such a position as to offer no interference with the use of the desk for ordinary purposes. It will further be apparent that this device is of such a character that it can be very readily attached to solid top desks already in use without altering said desks in any manner whatever.
lVhile we have shown and described two embodiments of the invention it will be understood that these are shown for the purpose of illustration only and that we do not wish to be limited to the details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a desk comprising two supporting members, and a solid top secured to said supporting members, of a supporting frame mounted between said supporting members and beneath said top, said frame being capable of bodily movement in a substantially horizontal plane, and a platform mounted on said frame and capable of movement about a horizontal axis, whereby said platform may be caused to project beyond the forward edge of said desk in a substantially horizontal plane or may be supported beneath said top in an inclined plane.
2. The combination, with a desk comprising two supporting members, and a solid top secured to said supporting members, of a supporting frame mounted between said supporting members and beneath said top, said frame being capable of bodily movement in a substantially horizontal plane, a
platform pivotally and slidably mounted at its forward end on said frame, and connecting members pivotally connected with said frame and the rear portion of said platform to permit said rear portion of said platform to have vertical movement relatively to the forward portion thereof.
3. The combination, with a desk comprising two supporting members, and a solid top secured to said supporting members, of a supporting frame mounted between said supporting members and beneath said top, said frame being capable of bodily movement in a substantially horizontal plane, and
a platform pivotally and slidably mounted.
at its forward end on said platform, levers pivotally mounted between their ends on said frame, said levers being connected on one side of their pivotal centers with the rear portion of said platform, and a weight carried by said levers on the other side of their pivotal centers.
4. The combination, with a desk comprising supporting members and a solid top carried by said supporting members, of guides secured to the respective sup-porting members beneath said top, a frame mounted to travel along said guides, a platform mounted on said frame and having movement relatively thereto, and means to connect said platform to said frame and to permit said platform to be moved into either a horizontal position or an inclined position.
5. The combination, with a desk, of a frame mounted thereon and capable of bodily movement relatively thereto, a platform having its forward portion pivotally mounted on said frame, levers pivotally supported by said frame beneath the plane of the axis of said platform and pivotally connected with the rear portion of said platform.
6. The combination, with a desk, a frame mounted thereon and capable of bodily movement relatively thereto, a platform having its forward portion pivotally and slidably mounted on said frame, and levers pivotally supported on said frame beneath the plane of the axis of said platform and pivotally connected with the rear portion of said platform.
7. The combination, with a desk, of a movable frame mounted on said desk, a platform pivotally and slidably connected to said frame, depending brackets secured to said frame, levers pivotally mounted on said brackets and connected with said platform in the rear of its pivotal connection to said frame.
8. A typewriter support comprising a movable frame, a platform pivotally and slidably connected to said frame, depending brackets secured to said frame, levers pivotally mounted on said brackets and connected with said platform in the rear of its pivotal connection to said frame, and a counterweight secured to those ends of said levers opposite the ends connected to said platform.
9. The combination, with a desk having supporting members, and substantially horizontal tracks carried by said supporting members, of a frame comprising side members slidably mounted. on said tracks, a platform having longitudinally slotted guides on the opposite sides thereof, pins carried by the side members of said frame and adapted to enter said slotted guides, depending brackets secured to the side members of said frame, levers pivotally connected between their ends to said brackets and each connected at one end to said platform in the rear of said slotted guides, and a counterweight connected with those ends of said levers opposite the ends connected with said platform.
10. The combination,with a desk comprising supporting members and a solid top, of tracks separate from and adapted to be secured to the respective supporting members of said desk, frame members slidably mounted on said tracks and adapted to be projected beyond the forward ends thereof, a platform carried by said frame members, having its forward portion pivotally connected thereto and having its rear portion vertically movable relatively thereto.
