Be it known that I, ROBERT L. CABLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danville, in the county of Pitt-sylvania, State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picker-Sticks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to picker sticks and more particularly the mounting of the picker stick upon its supporting shoe.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of an improved mounting for picker sticks which includes a yielding connection between the foot of the picker stick and the supporting shoe which constantly tends to force the foot toward the shoe anr. thereby preventing the foot from jumping upwardly during the movement of the picker stick with resultant damage to the work.
.Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a fragment of the replenishing side of an automatic loom with the invention applied, Fig. 2, an enlarged detail in front elevation of the connections between the foot of the picker stick and its supporting shoe or stand, Fig. 3, a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, Fig. 4, a section on the line 1-4: of Fig. 2, Fig. 5, a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2, Fig. 6, a section on the line 66 of Fig. 1 with the spring removed, and Fig. 7, a section on the line 77 of Fig. 6.
Referring to the drawings, 10 indicates the lay, 11 the picker-stick, 12 the lug strap connecting the stick with the pick motion, all of the usual and well known construction. The lay rocker shaft of the loom is indicated at 13 and has secured thereto a stand or shoe 14 which is provided with a vertical opening 15 for a purpose that will Specification of Letters Patent.

presently appear. Formed on the shoe 14 is a laterally directed depending ear 16 provided in its free end with a recess 17. Pivoted against one side of the shoe 14 at the adapted to rock upon the shoe 14: during the movement of the picker stick as is usual in the operation of looms. Slidably disposed in the recess 17 of the ear 16 is a rod 20 one end of which is threaded and has mounted thereon a nut 21 disposed against the outer face of the car 16, while the other end thereof terminates in an enlarged head 22 provided with a recess 23 in its outer end. Slidable in the recess 23 in an adjustable manner is a threaded stem 24 which terminates at its outer end in an enlarged portion 25 pivotally connected at its free end to the lower end of the angle lever'18.
The rod 20 is held against movement out of the recess 17 by means of a plate 26 disposed against the inner face of the ear 16 and provided with a recess 27 which receives the rod 20 and mates with the recess 17. This plate 26 is held in place by means of pins 28 formed on the inner face thereof which seat respectively in openings 29 formed in the inner face of the ear 16. The outer face of the plate 26 is provided with a reduced projection 30 which is received by a spiral spring 31 surrounding the rod 20 and having one end disposed against the plate 26. The other end of the spring 31 abuts a circumscribing flange 32 formed on the head 22, said head and the projection 30 on the plate 26 serving to maintain the spring 31 in proper relation to the rod 20. The upper end of the angle lever 18 is provided with a depending finger 33 which projects into an eye member 84 formed on the side of the shoe 14:, said finger and eye member preventing lateral movement of the upper end of the angle lever and consequent strain upon the pivotal connections between said angle lever and the foot 19 and shoe 18.
By this construction it will be apparent that as the picker stick 11 approaches the extreme limits of its movements the pivotal connection between the foot 19 and the angle lever 18 will move upwardly which will cause the lower end of the angle lever to move inwardly of the shoe let and compress the spring 31 as will be apparent. This increased tension of the spring 31 will react through the angle lever 18 to force the upper end of the latter toward the shoe 14:
and thus positively hold the foot 19 against any tendency to jump upwardly from said shoe. It will also be apparent that the construction heretofore described forms a yielding connection between the shoe 14 and foot 19 which will absorb any undue jar or vibration imparted to the picker stick during its limiting movements and thereby prolong the life and durability of said picker stick and its adjacent parts.
The foot 19 is provided with a depending finger 35 which projects through the opening 15 in the shoe 1 1 and is connected at its free end to a heel strap 36 in the usual and well known manner. The lower end of the finger 35 terminates in a drill directed outwardly of the shoe 14 to form a ready means for connecting one end of the heel strap 86.
What is claimed is:
In a device of the class described, a picker stick and its attached foot, a shoe on which the foot rocks, a bracket supported by said shoe, a rod slidable in said bracket, a head on said rod having a recess in its outer end, a spring encircling the rod between the head and bracket, an angle-lever having the outer end of one arm pivotally connected to said foot and the inner end of said arm pivotally connected to said shoe, and a stem pivotally connected to the free end of the other arm of the angle lever and having a reduced outer end slidable in the recess in said head, said stem being adapted to engage the head on said rod when the first named end of the angle lever is moved away from the shoe under the influence of the rocking of the foot, whereby said rod is moved to compress the spring and said spring reacting on said rod to rock the angle lever and move the first named arm-thereof toward the shoe.
