Definitions
- My improvements consist in devices for the purpose of insuring the clear passage of the straw, &c., between the feed rollers, and preventing the stalks wrapping around and clogging the lower roller. These objects are effected by means of a set of lingers (f) attached near the end of the trough (a, F ig. 2), and extending across the lower roller (e) and onto the floor of the mouth piece (g), the front face of which forms the edge against which the knife cuts.
- the roller (e) has grooves in its periphery in which the fingers (f) lie out of the way of disturbing the passage of the straw, &c., or of preA venting the feed projections on the roller e) from performing their oice. These fingers span the spaces intervening between the sides of the roller and the adjacent edges V ⁇ of the trough and mouth piece on either hand; and prevent the stalks from working down between and wasting or wrapping around the lower roller.
Description
H. TRUMBULL.
Straw Cutter.
Patented 1an. 24. 1854.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEETCE.
HARVEY TRUMBULL, OF CENTRAL COLLEGE, OHIO.
FEED APPARATUS OF STRAW-CUTTERS.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HARVEY TRUMBULL, of Central College, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have made new and useful Improvements in Straw-Cutters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the nature, construction, and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, which are made part of this specification, and in Which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine. Fig. 2 is a sectional View. Fig. 3 is a face or front view.
'The same letters refer to like parts in each of the figures.
My improvements consist in devices for the purpose of insuring the clear passage of the straw, &c., between the feed rollers, and preventing the stalks wrapping around and clogging the lower roller. These objects are effected by means of a set of lingers (f) attached near the end of the trough (a, F ig. 2), and extending across the lower roller (e) and onto the floor of the mouth piece (g), the front face of which forms the edge against which the knife cuts. The roller (e) has grooves in its periphery in which the fingers (f) lie out of the way of disturbing the passage of the straw, &c., or of preA venting the feed projections on the roller e) from performing their oice. These fingers span the spaces intervening between the sides of the roller and the adjacent edges V`of the trough and mouth piece on either hand; and prevent the stalks from working down between and wasting or wrapping around the lower roller.
The inclined trough (a), obliquely set knife (b), rhomboidal gate (c), oblique guides (d), and feeding mechanism (h, z', j, lc, l, &c.) do not require a detailed explanation.
Having thus fully and clearly described the nature and construction and operation of my improvements in straw cutters what I claim herein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The device for securing the clear passage of the straw, &c., over the interval between the trough and mouth piece and the lower roller; consisting of fingers (f), attached to the trough, and passing over the said roller into or upon the mouth piece, and secured from interference with the passage of the straw, &c., by grooves in the face of the roller in which the fingers lie.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand before two subscribing witnesses.
HARVEY TRUMBULL.
Witnesses THERON LEE,
ANNIS S. LEE.
