To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Hammer E. Bmsnnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Valparaiso, in the county of Porter, Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supports or Holders for Incandescent Electric Lights, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to supports or holders for incandescent electric lights.
The object of the invention is to provide a support or holder for an incandescent electric light which can be conveniently held and the light switch operated to turn the light on and off, with one hand.
To this end, a support or holder of my invention comprises the various features and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, in which my invention is fully illustrated',-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a support or holder for an electric light embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal, central, seetional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line 4.4 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged perspective view of the pin which forms the axis forthe switch.
.Refcrring now to the drawing, nates the handle or hand grip of proved support or holder, of which is a holeor opening 2, secured in which is a socket 3. for an incandescent electric light bulb shown at 4, Fig. 1.
The contacts or terminals 5 and 6 of the socket 3 are adapted to be connected with storage battery, not shown, by means of electrical conductors 7 and 8, in the' following'ma-nnerz-Said conductors 7 and. 8 extend through a hole formed lengthwise through the handle 1, into the hole or opening 2 at the inner end of the socket 3. The conductor 7 is connected directly 'to one of the socket terminals, as shown to the terminal 5. The conductor 8 is connected directly to a pin 9 which extends transversely through the handle 1 at one side of the hole or open- 2in which the socket 3' is secured and w ich forms a support for a rotatable thumb switch 10, by means of which said pin 9 and thus the conductor 8 may be electri- 1 desigmy imcally connected with and disconnected from formed in one end the terminal 6 of the socket 3. As shown, the thumb switch 10 is substantially semicircular in form and is mounted in a slot. 11 formed through the side wall of the hole or opening 2 in which the socket 3 is secured. The size of said thumb switch is such that its outer edge will project beyond the outer surface of the handle 1 so that it may. be conveniently engaged by the thumb of a person holding the handle 1, and the exposed surface of said thumb switch is preferably knurled to provide for more easily turning the same. Formed at the lower inner side of the thumb switch 10 is a projection 12 which is adapted to be brought into contact with the socket terminal 6 by turning the thumb switch 10 in one direction and to be disengaged therefrom by turning said thumb switch in the opposite direction.
As shown, the end of the conductor 8 extends through a hole 13 formed through the side wall of the hole 2 into the hole which receives the pin 9, and is secured in a slot 14 formed in one end of-the pin 9. the end of said conductor being preferably secured in said slot by first compressing the slotted end of said pin upon said conductor and then applying solder thereto, thus insuring a strong connection and a good electrical contact between the said conductor and the pln Both the pin 9 and the thumb switchlfi are made of brass or other conductor of electricity so that when the thumb switch 10 is turned to bringrthe projection 12 thereon into engagement withthe socket terminal 6, said conductor 8 and said socket contact 6 willbe electrically. connected.
The thumb switch 10 is adapted to be maintained yieldingly in positions corresponding to engagement and disengagement of the projection 12 thereon with the socket terminal 6 by means of a spring detent consisting, as shown, of a shoe 15, which is held in contact with the edge of the thumb switch 10 by means of a spring 16 applied thereto, the relation being such that turning said switch to effect engagement and disengagement thereof with the .s6cket terminal 6 will cause the pointed upper end 17 of said thumb switch to throw past the center line of said thumb switch. As shown, the shoe 15 is confined in a bore 18 formed lengthwise in the end of the handle 1 at one side of the hole or opening 2 and centrally with v the slot 11 and the spring 16 applied thereto is maintained under compression by a terrule 19 secured over the end of the handle 1. the inner side of which bears against the outer end of said spring. As shown, said ferrule 19 forms part of a guard for the lamp 4, consisting of said ferrule 19,
rods 20 secured therein and a. ring 21 secured to the outer ends of said rods. Said ferrule 19 and thus the lamp guard may be secured to the end of the handle by any suitable means, as by brads inserted through said ferrule into said handle.
My improved lamp is particularly designed and adapted for use on automobiles and other vehicles, the conduct-or wires 7 and 8 being connected to a storage battery located on the car and being of such length .that they will reach from the battery to all parts of the vehicle. wall of said hole or opening, a socket for an incaudescent electric light secured in said hole or opening, conductor wires adapted for connecting the terminals of said socket with a source of electrical supply, one of said conductor wires being connected directly to one of said socket terminals, a switch for connecting the other conductor .wire to the second terminal, said switch comprising a pin which extends across the slot in said handle and a rotatable member mounted on said pin within said slot, both said pin and rotatable member being made of brass or other-electrical conductor, the relation being such that turning said rotatable switch member in opposite directions will make and-break contact otsaid switch member with said second socket terminal, and means for securing said rotatable switch member in positions corresponding to engagement and disengagement thereof with said second socket terminal, substantially as described.
2. A supportor holder for an incandescent electric light, comprising a handle provided with a hole or opening in its outer end and a slot which'extends through the side wall of said hole or opening, a socket for an incandescent electric light secured in said hole or opening, conduct-or wires adapted cent electric light, comprising a handle profor connecting the terminals of saidsocket with a source of electrical supply, one of said conductor wires being connected directly to one of said socket terminals, and a switch for connecting the other conductor wire to the second socket terminal, said switch comprising a pin, which extends across the slot in said handle and a rotatable member mounted on said pin within said slot, both said pin and rotatable member being made of brass or other electrical conductor, the relation being such that turning said rotatable switch member in opposite directions will make and break contactof said switch member with said second socket terminals, and means for securing said rotatable switch member in positions corresponding to engagement and disengagement thereof with said second socket terminal, said means comprising a projection on said rotatable switch member and a spring pressed shoe which engages said projection, substantially as described.

A support or holder for an incandesvided with a hole or opening in its outer end and a slot which extends through the side wall of said hole or opening, a socket for an incandescent electric light secured in said hole or opening, conductor wires adapt-ed ,for connecting the terminals of said socket with a source of electrical supply, one of said conductor wires being connected directly to one of said socket terminals, and a switch for connecting the other conductor wire to the second socket terminal, said switch comprising a pin which extends across the slot in said handle and a. rotatable member mounted on said pin within said slot, both saidpin and rotatable member being made of brass or other electrical conductor, the relation being such that turning said rotatable switch member in opposite directions will make and break contact of said switch member with said second socket ter- 11! minal, and means for securing said rotatable switch member in positions corresponding to engagement and disengagement thereof with said second socket terminal, said means comprising a shoe movable endwise in a bore 1]. formedin the end of the handle of said support or holder centrally with the slot in which said rotatable switch member is mounted and a spring inserted bet-ween said shoe and a ferrule secured to the end of said 12 handle, substantially as described.

A support or holder for an incandescent electric light, comprising a handle provided with a hole or opening in its outer end and a slot which extends through the side 1i wall of said hole or opening, a socket for an incandescent electric light secured in said hole or opening, conductor wires adapted for connecting the terminals of said socket with a source of electrical supply, one of 1'1 said conductor wires being connected directly to one of said socket terminals,.- and a switch for connecting the other conductor wire to the second socket terminal, said switch comprising a pin provided with a slot in one of its ends which extends across the slot in said handle and a rotatable -mem-- ber mounted on said pin within said slot, both said pin and rotatable member-being made of brass or other electrical conductor, the relation being such that turnin said rotatable switch member in opposite lirections will make and break contact of said switch member with said second socket terminal;
the conductor wire connected to said switch extending through a hole in the side wall of the hole or openlng in which the li ht socket is secured and the end of said con uctor being secured in the slot in the end of said switch pin, substantially as described.
