LABEL-HOLDER.

To all 'whom t may concern.'

Be it known that I, JoHN H. STODDABD, citizen of the United States, residing at Stevensville, in the county of Sullivan and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Label- Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to label holders and has for its object the provision of a comparatively simple and thoroughly eiiicient device of this character especially designed for attachment to store shelving and adapted to support a card bearing information relative to the stock or goods displayed thereon.

A further object is to provide a label holder including a supporting bracket having a tag or holder slidably mounted thereon and movable to display position at the front of ashelf and to inoperative position beneath said shelf.

A still further object of the invention is generally to improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and efficiency, as well as to reduce the cost of manufacture.

Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claim.

For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a label holder constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same in position on the bottom of a shelf; Fig. 2 is a top plan view, showing the label holder housed within the supporting bracket; Fig. 3 is a longi tudinal sectional view of Fig, 2.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The improved label holder forming the subject matter of the present invention comprises a supporting bracket 5, preferably .stamped or otherwise formed from a single sheet of metal, the opposite longitudinal edges of which are bent upwardly to produce vertically disposed walls 6 having lat- Specification of Letters Patent.

erally extending perforated lugs 7 for attachment to the lower surface of a shelf, indicated at 8.

Slidably mounted on the bracket 5, is a holder 1() adapted to receive a tag, indicated at 11, the latter bearing indicia relative to the stock or goods displayed on the sh'elf 8. The metal forming the rear end and opposite side walls of the holder, is bent inwardly to form overhanging flanges 12 adapted to bear against the tag or card 11 and retain the latter on the holder. The metal at the rear retaining flange, is eX- tended laterally beyond the adjacent longitudinal edges of the holder and bent or folded upon itself to form oppositely disposed trunnions 13 which fit in slots 14 formed in the side walls of the supporting bracket, thus to permit the holder to be moved to display position at the front of the shelf and to inoperative position beneath said shelf.

The metal forming the bottom of the bracket is preferably cut-away at the for ward vends of the side walls 6, as indicated at 15, while the slots in said side walls eX- tend beyond the cutsaway portion 15 so that when the holder is drawn outwardly until the trunnions 18 bear against the forward end walls of the slots 9, said holder will drop by gravity and thus elfectually display the card or tag carried thereby.

The metal forming the forward edge of the holder is bent upwardly and inwardly to produce a retaining bead .1G which serves to prevent accidental displacement of the card or tag when the holder is in vertical position. The metal forming the bottom of the holder is stamped or punched to form a linger opening 17 to facilitate the removal and replacement of the card or tag, the metal between the walls of the opening being pressed downwardly to form a depending linger piece 18, by means of which the holder may be conveniently moved to operative and inoperative positions. Thus it will be seen that by grasping the finger piece 18 and exerting a longitudinal pull on the holder' until the trunnions 13 bear againstthe adjacent end walls of the slots 9 and then releasing the holder, the latter will drop by gravity to vertical position so that the store-keeper, by glancing at the tag or card carried by the holder, may readily ascertain the character of the goods or other information'relative to the stock sup ported on the shelf, without the necessity of removing the goods and inspecting the same.

Then the holder is not in use, the free end thereof is swung upwardly with the trunnions 13 as a pivot and the holder forced rearwardly to inoperative position on the supporting bracket and in which position, said holder will be effeotually housed and protected beneath the shelf. The lower walls of the slots 9, at the forward ends of the side walls G, are preferably inclined downwardly at 19 so as to forni in eect notches or depressions which receive the trunnions 13 when the holder is moved to display position and thus assist in preventing accidental displacement of said holder. If desired however, t-he walls of the slots may be disposed parallel throughout their length, the forward edge 15 ofthe bracket, by engagement with the holder, being deemed suflicient to prevent accidental displacement` of the holder when in display position.

By forming the opening 17 in the forward end of the holder, the finger may be readilyv inserted in said opening so as to dislodge the tag or card from the retaining bead 16 when it is desired to remove or replace the tag.

Vhile the label holder is shown applied to the lower face of a shelf, it will of course be understood that the device may be attached to the inner face of bins, drawers or the like, or wherever a device of this character is found desirable or applicable.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

A label holder comprising a bracket having a bottom and sides, the said sides being formed with slots and projecting beyond the forward edge of the bottom, and a tag holder formed at opposite corners with trunnions slidably and rotatably fitted in the slots, the said tag holder, at its end opposite the end at which the trunnions are located, being formed with a stamped out nger piece projecting from the rear side of the holder and arranged, when the holder is slid into position within the bracket, to abut against the forward edge of the bottom and thereby limit the sliding movement of the holder, the opening resulting from the formation of the finger piece permitting of the insertion of the finger for the purpose of removing av tag disposed within the holder.
