ALLAN F. WESTERSTRM, OF NSSJ, SWEDEN, ASSIGNOR T GUSTA?? J. JOHNSON, OF
PAXTON, ILLINIS.
CONVERTIBLE TABLE-BED.
,to all whom it' may concern;
Be it known that l, ALLAN F. W'nsrnns'rnar, a resident of Nssj, Sweden, and a subject or" the King ot Sweden, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Convertible Table-Beds, of which the tol lowing is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to furniture used in and about the house and designed to be adapted for use for a given purpose, when in one ot' its possible forms and for use for an additional or different purpose when in another form.
This invention consists of a table which can whenever desired, easily be converted trom the form of a table into that ot a bed, and vice-versa.
The device is specially usable :tor a kitchen table, but can also be used as a finer table.
The principle ont the invention is in the table legs being movable and in such position that they can easily be folded up to about the plane ot' the table top, thereby torming a trame Ytor a bed bottom.
rlhe attached drawings show an exam ple, in a general way, of the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 is an end elevation. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section with the table converted into a bed. Figs. 5 and 6 show the details of the bed bottom.
rlhe table top 1 is removable and is fastened to the trame 2, which forms the ounda tion for the same, by means of the hook 3, so that it can be easily removed and attached. The table legs 4 are movably fastenedvto frame 2 by bolts 5. The illustration shows the end table legs connected by the bar 6 so that they move together. The table legs are movably connected to the legs 7 at the upper end and to the legs 8 at the lower ends which latter are movable on the pivots 9. Said legs 7 being movable on bolt 5 are connected together by means of the tie-rod or cross bar 10, and the legs 8 by means ot the tie-rod or cross bar 11. rllhe legs 7 may be held fast to the legs 4, (at right angles thereto) by means ot braces 12 and to the trame 2 by means of button 13.
lVhen the table is to be changed to a bed the table top 1 is lirst removed, after which the legs 4 are loosened by twisting the button 13 into the position as shown in Fig. 4. Legs 4 and 7 can then be moved into the Specification of Letters Patent.

position shown in Fig. 4, whereby they are turned around the bolts 5 so that the table legs torni the side of the bed, thereby forming a trame tor the bed bottom; while thev legs 7 form bed legs. Thereafter the legs S are folded out so that they come in contact with the cross bar 6, thereby forming the outer legs ot the bed. Afterward one draws out the bed bottom 14 which is on the two sides of the frame 2. The slats 15 lie on the two sides ot the trame, and on the table legs 4, thereby completing the bed bottom. The slats 15 of the bed bottom are connected with each other by means of the flexible bands 16, which becomes taut when the slats are pulled out, and afterward the slats can be fastened to the trame by means of hooks, which are not shown on the draw The table shown in the drawings can be modiiied in several ways without departing from the principle of the invention. As for example, the table legs 4 can be rigidly conneeted to the legs 7, in which case the braces 12 are omitted. On the drawings there are shown movable connections between legs 7 and 4, so that the legs 4 can be folded up against the bars 2, for shipment. Instead ot the slats 15 :tor supporting the mattress, springs can be used, or a special frame having cloth attached to it.
I claim g- 1. A convertible table bed comprising a removable table top, a trame, legs attached to saidr frame, means to maintain said legs ,in a plane which is substantially at right angles to said trame, and said legs movable into substantially the plane of the frame, to form in combination with said frame the trame of a bed bottom, and additional legs said additional legs pivotally movableV into position to torni the legs of said bed bottom.
2. A convertible bed consisting of a frame, a removable table top on ysaid trame and means to secure said top to said frame, in combination with legs pivotally attached to said frame, means to join together the legs which are at one end of said frame, means to maintain said legs substantially at right angles to said trame, said legs movable to torm with said trame the frame of a bed bottom, additional legs pivotally attached and movable .into position to form the legs of the bed bottom trame, all of said legs movable into planes parallel to the said frame and imposed thereon.
3. A convertible table bed consisting of a frame and a removable table top on said frame, in combination With legs pivotally attached to said frame, means to join the legs which are at one end of the frame togethei, means to maintain said legs substantially at right angles to said frame, said legs io movable to form with said frame the frame of a bed bottom, additional legs pivotally attached to be movable into position to support said bed bottom frame, and a mattress support on said first named frame, said mntti'ess support movable on to said bed bottom frame.
