To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in a locomotive toy illustrated as an engine in which substantially the whole structure is formed and struck up from a rectangular sheet of metal.
The object of my invention is to provide an engine locomotive toy wherein the cab side walls, cab top, side frames, front and side boiler supports, run-boards and fender are struck up from a single sheet of metal and bent into shape.
Another object is to provide a blank of substantially U-shape and of such size and contour as to permit the use of the center portion within said blank for the boiler blank without waste of material.
Another object is to provide an improved form of coupling for coupling two toys to gether.
The features of the invention are more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved locomotive engine toy. Fig. 2 1s a rear elevation showing the coupling in sections. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detailed plan view of the floor of the engine cab and the coupling member of the tender. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detailed section of part of the engine cab, showing the coupling in partial engagement. Fig. 5 is a plan v1ew of the main blank, boiler blank intermeshed therewith and the cylinder blank.
In this class of toys, it is desirable to form the same of as few parts as possible and to so intermesh the blanks as to reduce the waste to a minimum. In Fig. 5, it will be seen that the main blank and the boiler blank are so intermeshed as to utilize practically the entire sheet of metal.
Referring to Fig. 1, 1 represents the boiler, 2 the cab side walls, 3 the cab top, 4 the side frames forming a truck frame suitable for holding the power mechanism, and 5, the fender. 6 represents the lower runboard, 7 the upper run-board and 8, the cylinders.
In the boiler blank, shown in Fig. 5, 9 represents slits separating the boiler proper from that portion representing the side walls 10 of the fire-box. The main portion of the boiler is formed cylindrical in cross section and the edges 12 are brought together, overlapped and securely fastened by rivets passing through orifices 13. At the forward ends of the edges 12 are slits 1A, which, when the boiler is formed, coincide to form a single slot on the under forward end of the boiler, the purpose of which will be later pointed out. The cab side walls 2 are bent downwardly from the cab top 3, along the dotted bending line 15, said sides having windows 16 cut therein. At the bending lines 17, the cab side walls are bent inwardly to form the cab seat 19, see Fig. 2, and horizontal run-board 6. Extending downwardly from the bending line 18 are the side frames 4, having orifices 20, 21, to receive the drive wheel axles and orifices 22, for the inertia wheel. Along the bending line 23, the upper run-board 7 is bent horizontally from the side boiler support 24, which has stamped therefrom, an ear 25, projecting into an orifice 26 in the side of the boiler. A representation of the fender cross beam is had by bending downwardly from the horizontal platform 27, formed integral with one of the side frames, front and side pieces 28, 29. A slit 30 separates the platform 27, from the forward edge of the side frame and permits the bending to horizontal position along bending line 31, of the platform 27 At bending line 32, a front boiler support 33 is bent to vertical position with its upper end entering the previously mentioned slot 14, in the forward end of the boiler 1. The fender 5 is bent along the dotted bending lines into V-shaped form. The opposite side frame has an ear 34, which is bent to horizontal position and riveted to the platform 27 by a rivet passing through the orifices 35. Formed integral with the run-boards 6 and stamped from the side frames 4: are ears 36, which project into slots 37, formed in the side walls of the firebox. outwardly from the side frames. 40 represents vertical piston rod guides also bent outwardly and having orifices 41, in which the piston rod slides. Orifices 4:2 in the forward ends of the side frames are adapted to receive earsof a bearing plate 4.3 which carry the axle of the front truck wheels 44. The cylinders 8 are provided with end pieces 45, each having ears 46, which engage into slots 47, in the side frames 4. One of said end pieces is provided with slots 48, to receive the piston rods 49. The body portion of the cylinders is bent to form a cylinder substantially egg-shaped in cross section. The coupling shown in the drawings, consists of an ear 50, bent downwardly from the rear horizontal platform of one toy, engaging with an orifice 51, in the front horizontal platform of a companion toy. 52 represents corrugated ribs provided on the front platform member.
In connecting two toys together, one is tilted and its front coupling member in serted into an orifice 53, in the companion toy, and when the orifice 51 registers with the car 50, the tilted toy is allowed to assume a horizontal position.
It will be seen from the above description that the particular design of blank shown in the drawings, will, when bent to form, form a locomotive engine toy of a pleasing design, of substantial construction, and, which can be stamped from a rectangular sheet with practically no waste of material.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. A locomotive engine toy, having a boiler, side frames, cab top, cab sides, boiler supports, run-boards, cylinders and fender stampedv from a single rectangular sheet of metal.
2. A blank for making a locomotive engine toy, comprising a cab, side frames formed integral therewith and connected together at their forward ends by a horizontal 40. platform having a fender formed thereon.

A blank for making a locomotive engine toy, comprising a cab, side frames 1 formed integral therewith and connected together at their forward ends by a horizontal platform, having a fender formed thereon, a vertical boiler support bent up from said platform, and run-boards formed integral with the side frames.
5. A blank for making a locomotive engine toy, comprising a cab, side frames formed integral therewith and connected together at their forward ends by a horizontal platform, having a fender formed thereon,
a vertical boiler support bent up from said platform, run-boards formed integral with the side frames, and boiler, supports formed integral with said run-boards.
6. A blank for making a locomotive en- 'gine toy, comprising a cab, side frames formed integral therewith and connected together at their forward ends by a horizontal platform, having a fender formed thereon, a vertical boiler support bent up from said 'platform, run-boards formed integral with the side frames, boiler supports formed integral with said run-boards, and piston slide-ways bent outwardly from the side frames.
7. A blank for making a locomotive engine toy, comprising a cab, side frames formed integral therewith and connected together at their forward-ends by a horizontal platform, having a fender formed thereon, a vertical boiler support bent up from said platform, run-boards formed integral with the side frames, boiler supports formed integral with said run-boards, piston slide-ways bent outwardly from the side frames, and a piston rod guide formed integral with said side frames.
8. A substantially U-shapecl blank forming the main frame-work, cab. and fender of a locomotive engine toy stamped from a rectangular sheet of metal, and a boiler blank so designed that it may be stamped from that portion of the sheet of metal intermediate the two arms of said U-shaped blank, leaving substantially no waste. 9. Two blanks for making a locomotive engine toy, forming the boiler, cab, side frames, boiler. supports, run-boards, fender and fire-box, so intermeshed as to be stamped from a single rectangular sheet of metal, leaving substantially no waste.
10. A substantially rectangular sheet of metal comprising two blank members, one of which is bounded by the other. on three sides and adapted to form, when struck up and secured together, the conventional, elementsof a toy locomotive.
11. A single sheet of metal divided into a marginal and a relatively central blank, the said blanks being so contoured that they may be struck up and united to comprise the conventional elements of a sheet metal toy of the locomotive type, the boiler being formed from the intermediate blank, and other locomotive elements being formed from the marginal blank, there being appreciably no metal wasted in the cut defining the separate blanks.
12. A single sheet of metal substantially of rectangular outline out to form. two blanks, one of which marginally bounds the other upon three sides, said blanks being so contoured, that when struck up and secured together, the ultimate structure comprises the conventional elements of a sheet metal locomotive toy.
13. In a toy, comprising two members detachably united, of a slotted longitudinal tongue projected from the base of one member, a depending slotted flange andlug depending from the second member, whereby in uniting said members the tongue of the first member projects through said flange and engages with the lug of the second 5 member.
14:. In a toy, comprising two members detachably united of a slotted longitudinal ribbed tongue projected from the base of one member, a depending slotted flange and lug depending from the second member,
whereby in uniting said members the tongue of the first member projects through said flange and engages with the lug of the second member.
15. A struck-up sheet metal locomotive 15 toy, comprising tWo units, the one comprising the cab and truck frame being struck up from a U-shaped blank, and the other comprising the boiler being struck up from a blank formed from the material rounded by the U-shaped blank, said struck up units being secured together.
