JOSEPH F. rr-Leena, or New ALBANY, INDIANA.
am Putative; 104,244, Imw'1ir,..1s7o.'.
.rmaovn'mm, m Burma .ll'he Schedule referred to in these hettem intent and making part of the am.
To all about it may concern; Be it known that I, JOSEPH F.,'AP PIJEGATE, of
New AIbafiy-,-iu"the county of Floyd and in the State will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, refern'ng to the annexed drawing, in which- .Figure 1 is a longitudinal ,vertical section of my bung.
--Figure 2 is an end view of aperforated screw-plug used in my bung.
Figure 3 is a side view of a solid plug which may be slcxlbstituted for the perforated plug shown in figs. 1 an 2.
v Figure 4 is a side view of a device for cutting the barrel-stares for the bung.
A represents a metal ring, of suitable size, provided with screw-threads both on the innerand outer sides. This ringis screwed into the stave of a barrel jectiug from the bung.
In the outer periphery, of the ring'A are one or more notchcs, as shown ata, in fig. 1, for the insertion of one or more nails, which will then be partly in the ring and partly in the stave, and thus prevent lthe ring from turning around with the turning of the ung.
The bung O is constructed,'as showri in; fig. l, with screw-threads fitting in the threads on the inner side of the ring A, and has a circular projecting flange, 'b, projecting around its outer end, which flange fits in the countersink formed by the auger B, and thus forms an even surface with the'cutside of the stave. It is also provided with wrench-holes d d.
In the center' of the bung O is a circular opening, 1,
provided with female sorew-threads,'said opening e3:-
tending from the outside a suitable distance inward,
"and from the'bottom of this openiugfis a hole, '2', ,thrnugh; the remainder of the bung; Irrthe bott'um' of the opening or recess 6 is placed a leadpa'oking, j,
with a hole in the center corresponding with the hole-i.
The opening or recess a is closed by means of solidscrew-plug D, by the brewer, for shipment, said plug coming down onto the lead packing f, making the bung perfectly air and gas t-ight.
When the barrel is to be tapped the plug 1) is ref moved, and the plug I substituted, said plug not reach-;
iug down to the lead packing.
-'The plug E, is perforated with afhole through the center,'and its inner end is bound with a rubber band, in, covering the inner end of the said hole; Bylthis means the necessary amount of air is admitted into the barrel,.while none of the gases can escape through th'erbung.
Where'a barrel of beer is emptied soon, say in one day, the rubber band may be dispensed with. Thus the solid plug D is-used by the brewers, and. the perforated plug I by the retail dealers Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let:
ters Patent, is-
The combination of the ring A, bung O, and plug I, all constructed and arranged substaut-iallyas and for-the purposes herein set'forth, v
In testimony that I claim the-foregoing, "I have hereunto set my handthis 23d day of May, 1870 JOSEPH F. APPLEGATE. Witnesses:
A, H. Mann, 0. L. Evnn'r.
