Description

UNTTED sTATEs rATENT onnion.
JOHN KEDZIE, OFFROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
FILTER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 10,420, dated January 10, 1854:; Reissued J' une 16, 1863, No. 1,498.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN KEDZIE, of the city of Rochester, county of Monroe, and State'of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction of Filters, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification, in which- Figure (1) represents a side elevation, Fig. (2) a vertical section, Fig. (3) a plan of the concave cover or base.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my improved filter, I will proceed to describe its construction in detail.
In a tub (A A) of any desired form which I prefer to make of oak or other hard wood rirly bound, but metal maybe used if desired, I place a stoneware reservoir Near the top of this reservoir is inserted a pipe (e) which passes up and out of the tub (A) near its top, being secured to the reservoir by means of a cork or other suitable packing; this pipe serves the double purpose of permitting the compressed air to escape, and allowing of a free circulation of pure air wit-hin the vessel. The inverted reservoir, is placed on a dishlike, or concave, perforated, base, and detachable bottom having a flanged or turned up edge or rim j, f, f, f,
serving to keep the reservoir B, 1n place.v
See Figs. 2 and 3. The bottom c, though detachable, fits sufficiently close to exclude any impure particles of the sand or gravel packing, which, by transportation or sudden jar without this concave plate, is liable to become loosened, thereby closing the pipe d) and rendering the filter entirely useless until it shall have been repacked. On the edge or periphery of this plate or cover is formed a slot (i), for the purpose of admitting an egress pipe (d), which passes out horizontally through the side of the tub (A), and to which a faucet is attached in the usual manner. This `pipe being firmly embedded in the packing, passing through the v slot and under the edge of the reservoir yas represented in Fig. (2), prevents all, possibility of its becoming deranged or obstructed by loose packing.
The blank space indicated by A, Fig. 2, is the portion 0r apartment of the tub, or tank to contain the water to be filtered. By this mode of construction of filters, it will be perceived, that the water is placed int-he space A, and by its pressure and gravitating tendency, passes through the successive layers of packing, .downward around the reservoir B, Fig. 2, and forces upward, in a purified state, through the perforations in the base or bottom c, c, into the space B.
The mode of packingflters, las well as the materials being so long in use and well known, and to which I lay no claim, a ninute' and detailed description I deem unnecessary here. V
Having thus fully described my invention and improvements, what I claim as new and original with myself, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
Constructing a filter with an inverted jar or reservoir B, having a detachable perforated base or bottom of a concave form, with a flanged orrim edge f, f, f, f, having a slot z', Figs. '2, 3, substantially as set forth, and
i as herein described.l
JOHN KEDZIE.
