Description

H. E. SMALLBUNE. SHARPENBR. APPLICATION FILED 213.10, 1911.
1,041,360. Patented 0013.151912.
UNITED STATES PATENT @FFIQEQ HARRY E. SMALLBONE, OF WILll/IETTE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO SMALLBONE MANU'- FACTURING COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
SHARPENER.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, HARRY E. SMALLBoNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vilmette, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to devices adapted for sharpening articles of cutlery, such as knives, shears, etc.; and my primary object is to provide an improved and simplified device well adapted for the purpose indicated.
The invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, in whichligure 1 represents a plan view of a Sharpener' constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, au edge elevational view of the same; Fig. 3, a section taken as indicated at line 3 of Fig. 2; 4, a section taken as indicated at line 4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5, a broken plan View showing a modification, in which the device is equipped with a knife-guard or guide; and Fig. 6, a section taken as indicated at line G of Fig. 5.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, the device, as there shown, comprises a handle 1 carrying a shank, or member, 2; a tixedly secured sharpening-member, or blade, 3 secured to the outer end of the member 2; an adjustably mounted sharpening-member, or blade, 4 co-acting with the blade 3; a framemember, or shank-member, 5, co-acting with the shank-member 2; and a winged clampingescrew 6 serving to secure the member 4 in adjusted position.
The handle 1 may, if desired, be a round wooden handle fitted with a ferrule 7, intov which the tapered end 8 of the shankemember extends. The member 2 is offset flatwise, as indicated at 9, a short distance from the inner end of the handle. The outer edge-portion of the base of the blade 3 is secured between the outer end-portions of the members 2 and 5 by means of a rivet 10, a short spacing-member 11 being inserted. between the member 5 and blade 3, said spacing-member 11 corresponding in thick-` ness with. or being, perhaps, slightly thicker, than the base-portion of the blade 4. Another rivet 12 extends through the inner portion of the base of the blade 3 and through a slot 13 with which the outer portion of the base of the blade 4 is provided, the ends Speeeaton of Letters Patent.
Application led February v10, 1911.
Patented Oct. 15,1912. serial No. 607,790.
of the rivet 12 being secured in the members 2 and 5. The base-portion of the blade 4 has an extension 14 provided with a slot 15 through which extends the screw 6. lIhe shank 'of the screw 6 extends freely through the slot 15, and a collar, or flange, 16 at the base of the shank bears against the member near the free end of said member. The screw has threaded connection with the member 2, so that the extension 14 of the member 4 may be clamped between the members 2 and 5.
The members 3 and 4 may be composed of hardened steel. They have sharpening edges 17 and 18 which cross each other and preferably are beveled slightly in the same direction. The edges 17 and 18 are straight edges and cross each other at an angle corresponding with the bevel which is to be given to the blade of the knife to be sharpened.
The sharpening operation is performed by drawing the blade of the article of cutlery between the sharpening- edges 17 and 18 of the members 3 and 4. Vhe-n desired, the screw 6 may be unturned to relieve the clamping pressure on the shank 14 of the member 4, whereupon the member 4 may be adjusted with relation to the member 3, thereby varying the point at which the sharpening-edges cross each other, so that. fresh portions of the sharpening-edges may be employed, according vto necessity. If desired, the screw 6 may be wholly removed, whereupon the member 4 may be removed from the frame to permit the sharpeningedge to be ground, and when this is done the sharpening-edge of the blade 3 may be ground without removing it from the frame. It will be noted that the slot 13 of the member 4 has an open end, and a space 19 is left between the extension 14 of the member 4 and the adjacent end of the handle to enable the removal of the member 4 to be effected, that is to enable the slot 13 to be disengaged from the rivet '12.
In the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the construction is similar to the construction already described, except that the frame-member 5 is omitted, and an adjustable knife-guide 20 is attached. The parts corresponding with the construction heretow fore described are similarly numbered. The guide 20 comprises a shank 21 which eX- tends parallel with the member 2 and is equipped with forks 22 separated by a space 23 adapted to accommodate the knife-blade. The shank 21 is provided with slots 24 and 25 which accommodate, respectively, a clamping-screw 26 and a rivet 12, which corresponds with the rivet l2 of the firstdescribed construction. It will be understood that the blade 4 and guide 20 may be independently adjusted, so that the slot 23 of the guide may be brought into registration with the point at which the sharpening-edges of the blades 3 and l cross each other, regardless of the position of adjustment of the member 4;.
The construction described is simple, may be cheaply manufactured, and the device may be liandily used, and is very effective for its purpose.
rIhe foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no undue limit-ation should be understood therefrom, but the claims should be construed as broadly as permissible, in view of the prior art.
W'hat I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
