To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM T. H. BROWER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing- Presses, of which the following is a description.
The present invention is a division of an application filed by me October 25, 1905, Serial No. 284,277.
The improvement relates more particularly to bed and cylinder printing presses and seeks to provide improved means for driving the ink fountain roller of such a press from the reversely driven bed-rack pinion shaft.
The invention consists in the features hereinafter set forth, illustrated in the preferred form in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims. a
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the printing press. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 8 is a detail section through the inking roll mechanism at one end of the press. Fig. t is a detail view partly in end elevation and partly in section illustrating the clutch mechanism for driving the ink fountain roller. Fig. 5 is a detail section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a detail section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A designates the main frame of the press from the sides of which rise suitable standards that sustain the impression cylinder B mounted upon a shaft B. Upon one end of the cylinder shaft B is fixed a bull-wheel C, which is provided on its inner face with inner and outer segmental racks C and C and with the reversing shoes D. The bull-wheel is also provided with a continuous gear C which meshes with a pinion on the main drive shaft. A bed-rack pinion shaft F extends from side to side of the machine and is provided with a bed-rack pinion F (see Fig. 2) which engages a rack h on the underside of the bed H. The bed H is mounted to reciprocate upon suitable guides on the main frame A, and the bed-rack pinion shaft F is provided with a pinion meshing with a rack h on the under side of the bed. At one end the shaft F is provided with a pinion and with lugs which are engaged by the segmental racks C and C and the reversing shoes D of the bull-wheel to rot-ate the bedrack pinion shaft in opposite directions and reverse its direction of motion and thus properly reciprocate the bed H in the manner set forth in the prior application referred to. Upon the opposite end of the bed-rack pinion shaft F is mounted a pinion R that meshes with the gear-wheel S, the shaft of which is suitably journaled in the main frame of the machine. This gearwheel has its outer face formed with a spiral cam groove 8 in which travels a roller bearing stud that projects laterally from the upper arm of an elbow lever S. This lever is pivoted on the side of the main frame andits depending arm is provided with a longitudinal slot 8 which receives an adjusting bolt .9 This bolt is provided with a washer (or head) at one end and a threaded nut s at its opposite end, the nut being provided with a handle by which it can be conveniently manipulated. The bolt .9 is provided with an enlarged portion which extends through a hole in the end of a rod or pitman S which, by means of the bolt 8 and nuts is adjustably connected to the lower arm of the elbow lever S. The enlarged or shouldered portion of-the bolt s permits the pivotal movement of the pitman S thereof. The opposite end of the rod or pitman is within a hole or coupling through which passes a bolt 8 (similar to bolt 8 that carries a threaded nut s on its outer end having a handle. The bolt 8 passes through a longitudinal slot 27 formed in the lower arm of an elbow lever T that is pivotally mounted upon a stud t projecting from the side of the main frame A of the machine. The upper arm of the elbow lever T is provided with a segment-rack T that engages with a pinion T loosely mounted on the shaft U of the ink fountain roller U, the roller U being mounted in a suitable ink receptacle or fountain at one end of the machine frame. From the hub of the pinion T projects a plate or arm t, carrying a stud t, whereon is pivotally mounted a pawl t the free end of which engages a ratchetwheel U keyed to the shaft U of the fountain roller U. A spring t serves to hold the pawl 25 in engagement with the teeth of the ratchet-wheel U Preferably, the ratchet-wheel is formed with a casing U from which projects a handle a whereby the ratchet-wheel and fountain roller U may be turned by hand, when required.
The pinion R on the bed-rack pinion shaft rotates theeam gear S in opposite directions and the spiral cam groove 8' of the latter oscillates the lever S which, in, turn through the medium of the rod S goscillates the lever T, segment-rack T and pinion T The pawl t and ratchet-wheel U form an intermittently acting clutch, so that the ink fountain roller U is rotated in one direction only, that is to say, during the forward movement of the pawl t During the backward movement of the pawl, it rides over the teeth of the ratchet-wheel U By varying the points of connectionof the ends of the rod or pitman S to the levers S and T, the throw of the pawl t and the extent of the spiral revolution of the ink fountain roller U, efleoted at each operation of the press, may be varied as required.
It is obvious that numerous changes may be made in the details set forth without departure from the essentials of the invention, as defined in the claims.
I claim as my invention y 1. In a printing press, the combination with the frame,a reciprocating bed and the oppositely driven bed rack pinion shaft geared to said reciprocating bed, of an ink fountain-roll at one end of the frame, an oscillating clutch mechanism for imparting one Way revolution to said fountain roll, a spiral cam geared to theibed rack pinion shaftto rotate inopposite directions therewith, an actuating member for said clutch Copies of this patent may be obtained for mechanism engaging and driven by said spiral cam, and connections between said member and said. clutch mechanism, substantially as described.
2. In a printing press, the combination with the frame, a reciprocating bed and the reversely driven bed rack pinion shaft geared to said reciprocating bed, of an ink fountain-roll at one end of the frame, an oscillating pinion and clutch mechanism for rotating said fountain-roll in one direction, a segment rack engaging said pinion, a spiral cam directly geared to the bed rack pinion shaft to rotate in opposite directions therewith, a rocking lever engaging said spiral cam, and a connecting link between said rocking lever and said segment rack, substantially as described.
3. In a printing press, the combination with the frame, a reciprocating bed and the oppositely driven bed rack pinion shaft geared to said bed, of an ink fountain-roll at one end of the frame, an oscillating clutch device for driving said fountain roll in one direction, a spiral cam geared to said bed rack pinion shaft to rotate in opposite directions therewith, a rocking lever engaging said spiral cam, and adjustable'connections between said rocking lever and said clutch mechanism, whereby the throw of the latter may be varied, substantially as de? scribed.
