UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEi'oE. N
LUIS .AIM AND JOI-IN SCIEATGril-3R,` OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY. LEG-REST FOR ROKING-CHAIRS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Oct. 1, 1912.
Application filed March 14, 1912. Serial No. 683,722. X
form a rocking rest for To all whom it may concern:
the legs on the top Be it known that we, Luis AIME and of the leg rest A, it being understood that JOHN STENGER, both citizensy of the United the said plate A5 is approximately on a level v States, and iesidents of Jersey City, in the with the seat B of the rocking chair, and is New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Leg- B-est for Roclinghairs, of which the follolwing is a full, clear, and exact description.
preferably convex at its u as to properly support the seated on the seat B of the rocking chair The leg rest A is connected by a bottom link C with the rocking chair'B so as to pper surface so legs of the user The invention relates to furniture and its hold the leg rest in proper position and the o ject is to provide a new and improved leg desired distance from the rocking chair B, rest for rocking chairs arranged to propand a top link D connects the leg rest A erly support the legs of the user of the rockwith the under side of the seat B so that ing chair with a view to insure the utmost when the rocking chair B is rocked a rockcomfort to the user and to allow of foldino' ing movement is given to the le@ rest A to tie leg iest under the seat of the rockino rock the latter in unison with the iockinO chair whenever it is desired to use the rockch air B, thus insuring the utmost comfort ing chair without the leg restto the user seated on the seat B and having For the purpose mentioned use is made of legs resting on the plate A5 of the leg rest 2o a leg rest provided with rockers and con- Ihe 'bottom link C is made in two parts nected with the rocking chair to support the C, C2 connected with each other by a hinge leg rest in upright position, and to allow G3 to allow of folding one section upon the oi" rocking the leg rest in unison with the other, as indicated in Figs; 3 and 4. The rocking chair. outer end of the section C is connected by A practical embodiment of the invention a -linge E with the bottom cioss bar A3 of is repiesented in the accompanying drawthe lug A, and the free end of the section C2 ings formino a pait of this specification in is provided with a hook F adapted to hook which similar characters of reference indionto a keeper G secured to the middle of cate corresponding parts in all the views. the cross bar B* of the rocking chair B.
Figure l is a side elevation of the rocking e upper link D is likewise made in secchair and the leg rest connected therewith tions D, D2 connected with each other by and in rocking position; Fig; 2 is a plan a hinge D3 to allow of folding the sections view of the same, parts of the rocking chair as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and the outer end being broken out; Fig. 3 is a sectional side of the section D is connected by a hinge E elevation of the rockin@ chair and the le@ with the upper cross bar A4 of the leg rest rest in iolded position under the seat of the ie free end of the section D2 is conrocking chair; Fig. 4L is an enlarged secnected by a pivot H with the under side of tional. side elevation of the same; and Fig. tie seat B o e rocking chair B so that 5 is a cross section of the same on the line when the parts are in the position shown in 5%5 of Fig. 3. Figs l and 2 then the leg lest A rocks in The leg rest A is used in connection with unison with the rocking chair B owing to a rocking chair B of any approved conie link D connectino the seat B with the struction, and having the usual seat B, legs upper end of the leg rest A.
2, runners B3 connected with each other t is understood that the rocking chair l5 y a cross bar Bt, a back B5 and arm rests B when rocked is liable to move on the iioor BG. The leg rest A consists of standards A and in doing so the leg rest moves with terminating at their lower ends in runners the rockin@ chair owing to the supporting or rockers A2 adapted to rock on the floor link Q and hence the le@ rest A not oni. in front of the rocking chair, and the said rocks in unison with the locking chair B 0 standards A are rigidly connected with but moves bodily with the same should the each other at the runners A2 by a bottom rocking chair move over the floor while cross bar A3. top cross bar A4 connects the standards A with each othernear the top thereof, A rest plate A5 is provided at its under side with lugs A6 connected by pivots A7 with the standards A so as to rocking.
The sections D and D2 to the under side of the sect-ion D2 and adapted to be engaged by a spring l2 secured on the under side of the section D. rhe free end I3 of the spring ll2 is made 5 hook shape and is engaged by the free end of a lever l* fulcrumed on the under side o the section D to permit the operator to swing the spring l2 outward to disengage the pin l and thus allow the sections and D2 to be folded one upon the other, as
lainly indicated in Figs. 3 and A.
lhen the leg rest A is not to be used'` it can be readily folded under the seat B of the rocking chair B, and for this purpose l the under side of the seat B is provided with longitudinally-extending guideways ,l adapted to be engaged by transverse pins K projecting inwardly from the runners A2 so as to support the runner end of the leg rest A, as shown in Figs. 3 and it. The under side of the plate A5 is provided at its rear end with a hook L adapted to be hooked onto a pin L carried by the under side of the seat B to support this end of the leg rest A at the time between the pins K resting on the guideways J.
It is understood that in moving the leg rest A from the extended position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 into the folded position illustrated in Figs. 3, t and 5, the operator first unhooks the hook F from the keeper Gr and folds the section C2- under the section C', and then the operator unlocks the sections D and D2 by pressing the lever 14 to allow of folding the section D under the section D2, at the same time moving the leg rest A under the seat B and sliding the pins K rearwardly on the guideways J and finally hooking the hook L onto the pin L.
.40 By reference to Figs. 3 and A it will be seen `that the leg rest A in folded position is completely out of the way of the occupant of the rocking chair B, to permit of using the same in the ordinary manner.
rlfhe leg rest shown and described is very simple and durable in construction and can be readily moved into extended position for supporting the legs of the occupant of the rocking chair B or moved into folded position underneath the seat B of the rocking chair to` be out of the way whenever it is desired tor use the rocking chair without the leg rest. lt will also be noticed that by having the pivoted top plate A5 the latter rocks independently of the leg rest A so as to support the legs in proper position on ing chair immediately below its seat and connected at its otherend with the upper ortion of the said leg rest, and a spacing connection pivotally connected at one en with the said cross bar of the rocking chair ,o and connected at its other end with the middle of the bottom portion of the said rocking leg rest.
