FOLDABLE TABLE-LEG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 1, 1912.
Application filed a r1124'; 1911'. Serial No. 623,009..
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREMONT L. WHIT- NEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Merrill, in the county of Lincoln and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Foldable Table-Leg, of which the following is a specification.
The/invention relates to tables and more particularly to supporting legs therefor, one of the objects of the invention being to prowhich can be readily. folded against the table top and which, when swung to operative position relativeto said top, will be held against displacement as long as subjected to the weight of the table top.
Another object is to provide a structure of this character which is simple in construction and the arts of which can be readily assembled an adjusted.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings-:Figure 1 is an elevation of one end portion of the table and showing the leg folded relative to the table top. Fig. 2 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1, the leg being shown extended or set up for use. Fig. 3 is an elevation of a portion of the table top and one of its supporting legs, the-same being viewed at right angles to Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section on line AB Fig. 3.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a portion of a table top having the usual side strips 2 arranged thereunder, these strips being connected, at their ends, to corner blocks 3 extending downwardly below the side strips and each block having a slot 4 extending thereinto from itslower end. A bore 5 extends into the corner block from the upper end'of the slot 4. a
Extending into slot 4 is a tongue 6 formed to permit the leg the table top and is then at one end of a table leg 7 and this tongue has a longitudinal slot 8 through which extends a pivot bolt 9 arranged transversely within the block 3 and projecting across the slot 4. The upper end of the tongue is cut of]? square so as to bear firmly against the upper wall of the slot when the leg is set up for use, and a stud 10 projects from said end of the tongue and is designed to project into the bore 5 so as to hold the leg against pivotal movement upon the bolt 9.
When it is desired to foldthe leg against the table top, the said top is elevated so as to move downwardly by gravity upon the bolt 9, thus withdrawing the stud 10 from bore 5. The leg can then be swung upon the bolt 9 and to the position shown in Fig. 1. To set up the table, the leg is'swung to position at right angles to pushed outwardly so as to force the stud 10 into the bore 5 and the square end of the leg against the upper end wall of the slot 4. The table can then be lowered until the leg rests upon the floor and it will be apparent, that as long as the weight of the table top is supported by the legs, said legs will not swing relative to the top but will firmly support said top.
It will be noted that the leg 7 has shoulders at the base of the tongue 6 and at the base of the projection 10, these shoulders being designed to bear against the lowerend of the block and the upper or inner wall of the slot 4, respectively, thus receiving all of the weight and'thus relieving the projection 10 from undesirable strain.
What is claimed is The combination with a table top, a corner block extending downwardly therefrom, and a side strip having a reduced end projecting transversely into the corner block, said block having a slot extending thereinto from its lower end and a bore extendin from the inner end wall of the slot and into the reduced end of the side strip, of a leg having a tongue at one end slidably and pivotally mounted within the slot, there being a longitudinal slot within the tongue, detachable means extending transversely through the block and the slot in said tongue for holding the tongue within the block, and a projection upon the free end of the tongue for extending into the bore to hold the leg against swinging movement relative to the block and my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature to lock the side st'ip to the block, said leg in the presence of two Witnesses. having shoulders or en agement with the lower end of the block and the upper Wall of FREMONT WHITNEY 5 the slot respectively While the projection is Witnesses:
seated in the bore. J NO. BRANDT,
In testimony that I claim theforegoing as DAVID ANDERSON.
