Be it known that I, MIRA E. CALDWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, in the county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Safety-En-V tongue on the opposite Hap adapted to beextended through a slit in the sealing flap, and my invention consists in the special form and arrangement of such securing tongue in combination with a slitted sealing flap in-which the sealing flap is gummed on both sides ofthe slit and the gumming of the sealing flap and the flap bearing the tongue is exclusively on the inner face, so as to be gummed in one operation, and yet the tongue is secured by adhesion on both its faces, as hereinafter more fully described with reference to the drawings.

Having reference to the drawings,-Lthe end-flaps of the envelops shown therein are .designated l and 2, respectively, 3 being the bottoni flap, and 4 the top flap. The disposition of the various aps, in general, is as usual. ln the present instance the bottom flap 3 is the one which is formed with a tongue 5, and the top flap is the one in which the longitudinal slit 6 is formed for the reception of the said tongue. The tongue is the intermediate portion of the bottom flap. f ieaumteasept. 24,1912@ 3, but is left free until the envelop is to be sealed for use. The top flap gummed along its free edge, at 4, as usual, and in addition below the slit 6, as at 4*. In sealing the envelop, the adhesive along the free -edgeof the top flap, and at 4b, is moistened.

At the time of vclosing the said flap down the-tongue 5 is turned back out of theway. Then such tongue, the adhesive upon its lunder yside having been moistened, isthrust ,inward through slit 6 in the top flap as far as it will go. Then the surfaces are pressed together so that they will adhere to one another. Thereby one portion of the tongue will overlie the apex of the top flap and' adhere thereto, while the extremity of the tong'ue will underlie the upper portion of the top flap, which will adhere thereto. To secure the most reliable results, the said extremity is caused to widen out transversely,4

as shown. One form of wideningis shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and another form in Figs.

4 and 6. In these latter figures the enlargedV head of the tongue is bifurcated and the upper flap has two slits 6, 6 to receive the bifurcated ends of the tongue. By means of the adhesive applied to the under surface of the widened portion of the tongue,`such portion adheres to the flaps 1 and 2.

It will be seen that in ,t-he construction of the envelop herein provided there is a sealing flap at the top 'with centrally converging sides which is provided with a slit 6 arranged near the apex, and which flap is gumnied on the inner face, both along its two converging edges 4 and also on both the upper and lower sides of the slit 6, and another flap at the bottom with centrally converging edges 6 slitted omeach side of the apex .in straight parallel lines to form a separately foldahle transverse central tongue 5 with the slits running divergently to the side edges 6 to form an enlarged head 5, and which lower flap is gummed exclusively on the inner face of its two edges 6 and the iuner face of the tongue and its enlarged head, whereby the tongue with its enlarged head, when lapped over the apex of the upper flap and extended through its slit, is doubly secured, first, b v the adhesion of the inner gummed face of the tongue to the end flaps of the envelop, and, secondly, by the adhesion of the upper gummed edge of the slit in the upper flap to the back or ungummed face of the tongue. In my invention it will be seen that the gumming of both the upper and lower iaps and tongue is exclusively on the inner face, lwhich permits it to be done in one operation and yet there is a double sealing of the tongue on both its outer and inner faces74 which is effected by placing the gum both above and below the slit 6 and terminating the tongue below vthe upper edges of the end flaps 1, 2. lt Will also be seen that the contour ot the blank for the envelop remains substantially the same as that in ordinary use.

I claim as my invention:

A safety envelop, comprising tWo end flaps and two side iaps of centrally converging form, the side flap at thebottom having converging edges slitted transversely to the envelop on each side of the apex in parallel lines to form a tongue 5 with the slits diverging to the outer converging edges of the flap on each side of its apex to form an enlarged head 5a, the side edges of said flap and the tongue and its enlarged head being all gummed onthe inner face, and the Centrally converging flap at the top being slitted near its apex and being gummed along its side edges and also on both sides of the slit on the inner face to give, With the conventional form of enn velop, a double sealing effect as described.
