,iL/"o all whom @may concern."
Be it lmown that I, Gammes T. EAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Kalamazoo, county of Kalama- Zoo, and'State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements. in Arbor Presses or Rams, o' which theitollowing is a specification.
`This. invent-ion relates to improvements arbor presses.
The main objects of this invention are: First, to provide a quick acting 'arbor prese of the rack and pinion type. Second, to
. provide an improved pawl and ratchet means for actuating the ram of an arbor press so that it can be operated. fast or slow, with a corresponding variation oi 'power. Third,'to provide means of adjust;l 'ing the tableur Work support for such an arbor press.
Objects pertaining to details andfecono mies of construction will definitelyl appear from the detailed description to follow.
I. accomplish the objects o f my invention by the devices and mea-ns described .in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and 'pointed out in the claims.
A structure constituting an effective and referred embodiment of my 'invention is learly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specifica tion, in which:
Figure I is a perspective view of an arbor press, part of the operating lever being broken'away. Fig. II is an enlarged front elevation View of the press a peering in Fig. I. Fig. III is an enlarge detail perspective view from the left hand side or Vthe structure appearing in Fig. I. Fig. IV is an 4enlarged vdetail Sectional view onI a f `line corresponding to line 4 4 of* Fig. II,
showing `details of the adjustment for fthetable and the receiverfor the ejected `arbor or shaft. Fig. V is ya detail perspective lview on line 5`-5 of Fig. IV, showing de; `tails of the table clamp' and adjusting means., ig. VI is a detail sectional trier.' online 6 6 of Fig. V, showing details of the clamping means. Fig. VII is an* en l'arged detail elevation View 4from the riv'ht hand side of the ram operating 'ratc et l ,means appearing in Fig. II, portions being l tn'olgen away to show; the details of co. n-
l is
.I i' 7-7 of Fig. II, oit' therain oper" ratchet means, the operation olf t appearing by dotted lines. Fig. detail sectional plan view taken oorrespondngto line 5%8 ci 'ing the rack and pinion action ratchet mechanism. Fig. X. is d tional plan vienY taken on a line cci ing to line 9-4-9 of Fig. II showing the ad justable .pivot pins for shillingtlie :ratchet vfrom quick to slow, or vice versa. Fig. is an enlarged detail sectional View taken on ,a line corresponding to linev iO--il ci Fig. Il, showing the locking' means for locking the ram in the elevated position, or in any other position desired.'
Inthe drawing, the sectional views are A vtaken looking in the direction of the little. arrows at the ends of the section lines, and Similar numerals of reference refer .to sinii lar parts throughput the several views,
Considering the numerals of? reference, the improved' mandrel or arbor press is sup-- ported on suitable base l. A. column 2 ci' genoral T-shaped cross section carries the overhangin head above and the adjustable work e5 table 3 elow. l. ram 'e which is prefere bly square in cross section is supported in able ways and is retained in posit-ion cap 6.. On lthe back of the rain. t are raciti teeth 7 which mesh with the pinion 8 by Se which the ram is controlled, The pinion is carried-by shaft 9 suitably -journaled the standard on-the left hand end ofi which. .is a hand wheel l0 .for manipuiating the same by hand. The shaft 9 may be clamped 'in position by the clamp il controlled by the hand screw 12, t'oholdfthe rain in 'the .elevated or any posit-ion desired, as clearly appears in Fig. f-Qn the opposite end of the shaft 9x is al {ix-ed ratchet. wheel 13, controlled and acted upon by suitable ratchet pawl 15. 'This .pawli is ciniied by a carrier ifi, which is journalcd to oscillate upon the sl1aft""9.
