Specification of Letters l'atent.
Patented A110227, 1912;
Qriginal application tiled September 22, 1911,\ Serial No. 650,671. Divided and this application iled December 28, 1911.
To all whom i may concern.' j Be it known that l, Barnim D. Jones, a citizen of the United Stateni'eeiding in the city of Chicago, countyo Cook, and Sta-te of Illinois, have invented certain ntuis''amlV useful improvements iniGar-'LDooIvs51-vof which the following is a specific;ation;v
This application is a divisional applicivl tion of an original application :filed Septexn bor'zZQ, 191,1,-Serial No. 650,671.1.. a
The'invention relates' toimprovement in car doors and' has among. its salient objects' f y to provide an improved form of weatherguand which is 'adapted for use with either sheetarnetel or Wooden doors and-may be creadily applied to any oitithe standard types of eardoors; toproiridea construction of tha-character referred to which obviates any danger of binding due either to .close-v ness of fit or warping of the car body or car door.; to provide aniniproved form of weather-guard which is extremely simple and economical-in construction and at the ,same time is reliable in operation eifectually 2o preventing any Water from entering or seepln into the car body, andin general to provi e an improvedconstruction of the charn I kactez rei'erredA to.
inthe present instance l have shown my improved form of Weather-guard as ap plied to a steel door constri'lctionv although it is tobe'iiiderstood that it can beas readily applied to, the ordinary type of wooden )freight car doors'. es
'inafter/ descnibed and more .particularly pointed out in the appended'claims. v Referring to the drawings-#Figure l is a fragmentary side elevation of a steel A.lilreight car door equipped with my invention. Fig. ljis a transverse Asectional view of the' same. `Fig. 2 is a fragmentary 'rear end view of the door and showing the car in section and-.showing the WeatherguaI-d in dotted lines. Fig.- 3 isa fragmen-4 tary Iside elevation of the door on' an en- `larged scale and showing more particularlythe blocks or braces for the Weathenguard. Serial No. 668,293.
xReferring to the drawingsf-ldesignates i as a v'vhole'a car body provided with a suit* 60 able door-opening across which is adapted to slide a ein" door 2 which in thetlpresent in-V The invention consists of the matters herestance is' shownA as made of'steel and having a plurality of reinforcing ribs 3. Above the 1 doonopening is secured a channel-shapedl track'membe'r 4 in which ride track Wheels 5 carried by bracket 6 secured to lthe u per l end of the door. Atthis upper midthe` oor has an angle iron 7 which projectsinto a recess formed bythe track and the car body; 'Z0 l andat this lower end the door has asimilar angle iron 8., the lower flange of which projects into the lower confining brackets 9. These angle irons are formed integrally with the bodyof the car but have nothing to do 'l5 with the present invention; The front edge of the door has a strengthening angle iron l0 and Weatherchannel 11 is formed between one of the doorxposts l2 and door stopl. 'f I Referring `new to the salient feature of my inventionyto Wit, to` my improved Weatherguard, to the rear edge of the door is secured an angle iron 14A (lne lenge l of .is angle iron is .riveted as shown at 16 tqthe outer face of the door, While the other `flange 17 projects inwardly beyond the plane olf`\the door and together with the door post l2 forms a vertical Weathenchanl nel l18. The flange l5V is spaced away from 90 l the face 'of,the door a slight distance by means of spaceibloclis 19 through' which .rivcts 16 extend. l The other flange 7.7 of the weatherguard 'is `also braced and strengthened by means of lugs or tonguesQO, These tongues may be struck out of the door to take the form shown indotted lines in Fig. 5 and are thenybent inwardly at rightnngles as shown at 2l. The extensions 21 aire riveted, as shown at 22, to the ange 17 OI' the 100 Weatherguard. The construction is peculiarly Well adapted for preventing moisture from entering the car at the rear end of the. door; A ny moisture which enters channel -18 will either escape at the upper or lower 105 end? of this open-ended channel or pass through the space between the flange 1G and thel edgelof the door.
turned flange 25, which is riveted, as shown at 26, to the in-turned flange of the weatherguard. The outer iiange of the weather guard may be secured to the bracketsj23 by means of thev same rivets v24. It will be noted 4that the brackets 23 are relativelyY narrow` and as the weather-guard extends thro-ughout the height of the door the weather-guard is spaced away from bot-h the face and edge of the door substantially throughout its entire length The invention is not limited to the details of construction shown except as set forthin the appended claims. j
I claim as my invention:
'1. The combination with a car body, hav'- ing a c ar door opening, a doorpost at either end of said opening, a door mounted to move across said opening, and an angle-'iron secured to the rear edge ofv the door and j forming a weather guard, one flange of said angle-iron being substantially parallel with but spaced away from the frontface of the door, and the other flange of said angle-iron projecting inwardly beyond the rear edge of the door and similarly spaced away from the latter, said angle-iron extending substantially throughout the height of the door.
2.` The combinationwith a car body havinga car door opening, a door post at either i endl o `sai opening, a door mounted to 1noveacross sai opening, the post for the rear'end Curie-s of this patent "wv be obtained for ive cents of the door projecting beyond the plane of'` the'car body, an angle-iron extending along j ange of said angle-iron being substantially parallel with but spaced away from they front ,50 said angle-iron projecting inwardly beyond? face of the door, and the other flange of the rear edge of the door and .similarly spaced away from the latter. l l.
3. The combination with a car body hav-i ing door opening, ot' a door/post at either, end of said opening, a door mounted to move across said opening, a substantially Il shapedweather-guard extending along th/e rear edge of the vdoor when secured thereto and extending substantially throughout 'the height of the door, one side of said weather, guard lying alongside of but spaced away from the front face of the door, and the other side of said weather guard. projecting inwardly beyond therear edge oil the door Y'and similarly spaced away from the latter."
Il. The combination with a car body having a door opening, of a door post at leither end of said opening, a door mounted tov move across said opening, a substantially L-shaped weather guard extending along the rear edge ot the door when secured thereto and extending substantially I throughput the height of the door, one. side of said wea/ther* guard lying alongsideobut spaced away from the front face cfl tlie door, and .the other side of said weather guard projecting inwardly beyond the rear edge of the door and similarly spaced away fro/1n thelatter, and spacing members spacing both sides of said weather guard/away froin'the face and rear edge of/the door respectively. 1
