ADJUSTING DEVICE.
Application filed November 4, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIE CL TEMPLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and justment of one of said parts with relation to the other may be readily accomplished without manipulation of the members of which said device is composed, by merely moving the parts'to which they are applied to the desired position relative to each other. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings in the various views of which like parts are similarly designated and in which,

Referring to the drawings by numerical reference characters, the numerals 2 and 3 designate respectively the two cooperative members of the locking device which are adapted to be attached to the parts of a mechanism which it is desired to adjustably connect, as for example, the body and back of a reclining chair. One of the members 2 comprises a bar 4 which has in its upper edge, a series of teeth 4* whose faces are formed with an obstructive portion and an inclined portion whereby to permit the movement of a pawl or detent, from any one of the interdental spaces of the bar, into another in one direction only. The member is further provided with a ledge 5 whose upper surface extending substantially parallel to the toothed edge of the bar, has a plurality of low, inclined protuberances or shoulders 6 which are preferablyformed by upsetting punched-out portions of the metal of which the member is composed. tween the bar 3 and a therewith parallel back-plate 7 which provides a ready means for securing the member to the part to which it is applied, and flanges 8 at the ends of the ledge are provided to limit the move ment of the locking member, the construction of which will now be described.
The member 3 of the device is composed of a dog 9 which is adapted to be secured at one of'its ends to a part of the mechanism to which the invention is applied, and which at its opposite end has a laterally projecting stud 10 which carries a roller 12 which when the members of the device are in the operative positions, occupies one of the interdental spaces of the toothed bar 4. Pivotally mounted upon the end of the stud 10, is a gravity pawl 13 which, normally, rests upon the shouldered surface of the ledge 5 and which when the pawl 9 is moved along the inclined surfaces of the teeth to adjust its position with relation to the member 2, drags along the surface of the ledge and over the inclined surfaces of the shoulders formed thereon. A pin 14 secured at the endof the stud 10 projects through an elongated notch in the pawl 13, and is provided to limit the movement of the latter about its pivot on the stud.
When the two members of the adjusting device are attached to the parts of the mechanism to which it is applied, they are maintained in a selected position with relation to each other by the engagement of the roller 12 on the pawl with any one of the teeth of the bar 4, as is shown in Fig. 2 of the drawmgs.
To change the position of the part which carries the member 3 of the device in the direct-ion of the arrow at, it is but necessary to move the member in this direction, when the roller on the end of the pawl will ride along the inclined face portions of the teeth from one interdental space into the other, while the dog 9 with which it is connected moves about its pivot. If, however, it is desired to change the position of the member 3 with relation to the other member of the device in a direct-ion opposite to that indicated by the arrows, it is necessary in order to attain the object of the invention that the roller 12 be lifted free from engagement with the obstructed faces of the teeth on the bar 4: without manipulation of the dog 9. To accomplish this result I have provided the gravity pawl 13 which after the part to which the dog is attached, has been moved a shortdistance in the direction tof the arrow at, will with its free end, en-
gage the adjacent shoulder 6 on the ledge as shown in broken lines in Fig. 3.

is now moved in the desired direction, the pawl by abutment with the shoulder 6, will turn about its point of contact and thereby lift the roller out of the interdental space on the bar in which it was supported until the pin ltengages the opposite end of the notch in the pawl, when the dog may be moved in the direction opposite to that indicated by the arrows without engagement with the teeth of the bar until the part to which the member 8 is attached has been brought to the desired position, when by releasing the same, the dogwill by gravitative action reassume its former position ders adapted to separately obstruct the movement of said pawl along the same.
2. In a device of the class described, a member having a series of teeth, the faces of which are inclined in one direction, and a surface extending longitudinal with relation to said series, a member adapted to enter the spaces between said teeth, and a gravity pawl connected wit-h the last mentioned member so as to engage said surface when the members are in their operative position, the said surface having a plurality vof shoulders adapted to separately obstruct the movement of said pawl along the same, in one direction.-
3. In a device of the class described, a member having a series of teeth and a surface extending longitudinally with relation to said series, a member adapted to enter the spaces between said teeth, and a gravity pawl connected with the last mentioned member so as to engage said surface when the members are in their operative position, the said surface having a shoulder adapted to obstruct the movement of said pawl along the same.
