To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDOLF'J. PETERSON, a subjectof the King of Sweden, residing at Salem, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio. havcinvented a new and useful Railway-fie and Fastener, ofwhich the following is a. specification.
My invention relates to improvements in railway ties and fasteners and especially to a form of the same made from rolled shapes of steel or similar material, such as I beams, old rails and the like.
The objects'of the invention are to generally improve devices of the character men-. tioned and to provide a railway tie and rail fastener of simple construction, having few parts and capable of being easily and quickly installed and very eflicient and strong after suchinstallation. These objects, together with other objects apparent to thoseskilled in the art, may be attained by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, although the invention may be embodied in other forms, the construction illustrated beingfc'hosen by way of example.
In the drawings, Figure 1.is a perspective view of a railway tie made in accordance with my invention. Fig.2 a top view of the same with fragmentary portions of rails tie by my invented rail fastener. Fig. 3 is a top view of a; modified form of rail embodying my invention. Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective fragmentary view of a portion of a tie and rail fastened thereto in accordance with my invention. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the rail fasteners. Fi 6 is a vertical sectional view on the line ()6 of Fig. 5.

More specifically describing the construction-disclosed in said drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the upper horizontal flange, the numeral 2 the integral vertieal web and the numeral 3 the integral lower horizontal flange of the tie. lVhile in cross-section the ties illustrated in the drawings are of the I bean-1 shape it willbe understood that other shapes may be employed, such for-instance as an old or discarded railway r'ail' turned with its bottom flange up.

In order'to fasten the rails 4 to the tie I provide all fastener such as clearly illustrated in.Fig. 5' -and which comprises the body portion 9 having at its 'two ends the uiulerturned holding flanges 10, the integral laterally'i extending rail engaging portion 11, and the oppositely extending lateral tie engaging extension 12 and t 1e integral adjacent said extension 19.
Inwardly spaced from the stop lugs G and outwardly spaced from the rail holding lugs 7 I provide the notches 11 in the edges of the flange 1, said notches being adapted to receiveihe flanges 10 of the rail fastener. When the fastener has been driven sufliciently tight the locking lugs 13 may be bent downward by well dlrected blows of the sledge until their outer free ends engage the outer edges of the notches 14, as illustrated in Fig. 4:, whereupon it will be found that the rail will be tightly clamped to the tie. It does'not matter whether-the fastener on the inside of the rail 4- or on the outside thereof is first applied, as the lugs, 6 and prevent any sidewise movement of the rail 4; during thefastening operation. It will be noted that the device is entirely free from bolts, wedges, or other similar fastening devices, and when the lugs 13 have been bent down as shown in Fig. 4 there is no tendency for the device to become loosened by.use. If it is desired to loosen the fastenings, however, the lugs 13 may be bent upward into the same plane as that of the extension 12, whereupon the fastener may be driven away from, therail 4:," as will be well understood by those skilled in the art.
