To all whom it may concern. Be it known that I, JOSEPH HURST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Centrifugal Pumps,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to centrifugal pumps designed more particularly for dredging purposes, and .its object is to provide the blades of the runner. with removable wear blocks of novel form and construction, so that when they are worn away from the sand, gravel and other hard substances passing through the pump, they may be removed and replaced by new ones.
The invention also has for its object to provide wear blocks which are arranged so as to increase the capacity of the pump.
In the accompanying drawing forming a 'part of this specification-Figure 1 is a front elevation of the pump runner. Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an elevation showing a modification. Fig. 5 is an'edge View thereof. Fig. 6 is a vertical section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
Referring specifically to the drawing, the pump runner comprises two laterally spaced circular disks 10 and 11, respectively, carryblades 12. ,The disk 10 has a central opening 13 which is the inlet, and the disk 11 has a hub 14 whereby the runner is mounted on the drive shaft 15. The blades 12 extend radially and have their outer ends flush with the periphery of- The inner ends of the blades terminate at a point close to the inlet opening and carry wear blocks 16 which project a short distance into the plane of said opening. The blocks form the tips of the blades, and their main body portion has a thickness and shape to form a, solid continuation of the blades. The'blocks also have an extension 17 of reduced thickness which fits on the working face of the blades and terminates flush the runner disks.

and in said reduced portions are alined openings to receive bolts 18 for fastening the blocks to the blades. The bolt heads are countersunk in the working. face of the blocks, so that there will be no projecting parts to interfere with the proper working of the blades. The nuts 19 which secure the bolts are screwed against the rear face of the blades. The reduced portion of the blocks and the contiguous portion of the blades are undercut so that a more rigid connection may be had.
Figs. 4 to 6 show a modified form of wear blocks 20 having extensions 21 similar to the extensions 17, but prolonged so as to pro jectbeyond the plane of the periphery of the irunner disks as indicated at 22, and on the side edges of said projecting ends are flanges 23 which. fit the periphery of the continuations thererunner disks and form of. By these projecting extensions the ca pacity of the pump is increased. The blocks 20 are the same manner as the blocks 16.
1. A runner for centrifugal pumps comprising laterally spaced disks, one of said disks havinga central inlet opening, blades mounted between the disks and terminating short of the aforesaid inlet opening, and removable wear-blocks mounted on and covering the entire working face of the blades and projecting from the inner ends of the blades into the plane of the inlet opening, said projecting portions of the shape to form solid continuations of the blades.
2. A runner for centrifugal pumps comprising laterally-spaced disks, one-of said isks having a central inlet opening, blades mounted. between thedisks, and removable wear blocks secured to the inner ends of the blades and having extensions which fit on the blades and form the working face thereof, said extensions projecting beyond the plane of the periphery of the disks, and having side flanges fitting said periphery.
