To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM SCHULTZ, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Lilly, in the county of Cambria and State'of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to toys, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a musical toy or instrument that is operated by wind to produce a whistling sound accompanied by the ringing of bells.
Another object of this invention is to provide a novel toy that will afford considerable amusement to juveniles, the toy being simple in construction, durable, and highly eflicient as an amusement device.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the toy, Fig. 2 is a similar View with the casing thereof in section, Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the body of the toy partly broken away and partly in section, Fig. at is an end view of the toy partly broken away and partly in section, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a detached bearing frame.
The reference numeral 1 denotes a fiat rectangular body, preferably made of wood, said body having one end thereof provided with a longitudinal bore 2 that is in closer proximity to one edge of said body than the other, as best shown in Fig. 4. The bore 2 has the open end thereof enlarged, as at 3 and the walls screw threaded to receive a nipple 4 that protrudes from the end of the body 1. Mounted upon the nipple 4 is a flexible connection or hose 5 that can be provided with a mouthpiece (notshown) whereby air can be easily blown into the bore 2. The inner end of the bore 2 terminates in a port 6 and arranged over said port is a reed or flexible strip 7 that is held in place by a washer 8 fitted in the enlarged end 9 of the port 6. When air is blown through the port 6 the reed 7 is vibrated to produce a whistling sound.
Mounted upon the body 1 is a bearing frame comprising a yoke 10, longitudinal alining side arms 11 and 12, hangers 13 and 14 carried by the arms 11 and 12 respectively and straps 15 and 15, the former being connected to the body 1 and the arm 12. The elements 10 to 15 and 15 inclusive are preferably stamped from a single piece of sheet metal and then bent to the shape shown in Fig. 5.
J ournaled in the yoke 10 is the shaft 16 of a bladed wind wheel 17, said wheel being located above the port 6 whereby it can be driven by air blown through said port. The shaft 16 has a pin wheel 18 meshing with a gear wheel 19 mounted upon a crank shaft 20 journaled in the straps 15 and 15. The crank portion of the shaft 20 has a revoluble antifrictional roller 21 that impinges the flat ends 22 of levers 23 and 24; fulcrumed in the hangers 13 and 14 respectively. The lever 23 has an off-set portion 25, as best shown in Fig. 4.
Pivotally mounted in the outer ends of the arms 11 and 12, as at 26 are angle tappers 27 having the upper ends thereof connected by rods 28 to the outer ends of the levers 23 and 24. The lower ends of the angle tappers are in proximity to and adapted to strike crowned bells 29 mounted upon the body 1.
Inclosing the air actuated bell striking mechanism is a rectangular casing 30 having the lower edges thereof suitably secured to the body 1, the casing having the front wall thereof cut away, as at 31 to provide clearance for the bells 29.
From the foregoing it will be observed that when the wind wheel 17 is revolved a rotary movement is imparted to the crank shaft 20 and that the fulcrumed levers 23 and 24 are alternately actuated to alternately cause the tappers to strike the bells 29.
It is thought that the operation and utility of the toy will be apparent without further description, and while in the drawings there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof are susceptible to such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
That I claim is 1. A toy comprising a body having a port formed therein through which air is adapted to be blown, a reed at the inner end of said port, a wind wheel revolubly mounted a revoluble movement of said wheel for upon said body and adapted to be actuated by air from said port, bellsmounted upon said body, and a tapper mechanism actuated by a revoluble movement of said wheel for sounding said bells.
2. A toy comprising a body having a port formed therein through which air is adapted to be blown, a reed at the inner end of said port, a wind Wheel revolubly mounted upon said body and adapted to be actuated by air from said port, bells mounted upon said body, a tapper mechanism actuated by sounding said bells, and a casing inclosing said mechanism and having a wall thereof cut away to provide clearance for said bells.
3. A toy comprising a body having a port formed therein, a Wind Wheel revolubly mounted above the inner end of said port and adapted to be actuated by air emitted by said port, bells mounted upon said body,

A toy comprising a body having a port formed therein, a Wind wheel revolubly V mounted above the inner end of said port and adapted to be actuated by air emitted by said port, bells mounted upon said body, a tapper mechanism actuated by a rotary movement of said wind wheel and including 7 tappers adapted to strike said bells, anda casing mounted upon said body and inc1osingsaid tapper mechanism and having a wall thereof cut away to provide clearance for said bells.
5. A toy comprising a body having a port formed therein, a flexible connection supported by said body and in communication with said port, a revoluble wind wheel arranged above the inner end of said port and adapted to be actuated by air blown through f said port, bells mounted upon said body, and a tapper mechanism actuated by a rotary f movement of said wind wheel and including 1 angle tappers adapted to strike said bells.
