To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD RICH Torrs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburgh, Allegheny county, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sights for Firearms, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to sights for firearms of the type illustrated and described in Letters Patent of the United States granted to me September 15, 1908, and numbered 898,532.

In my prior patent above referred to, a rear sight is shown of a form such as to present with hair-line effect, an approximately triangular figure and cooperating therewith, there is a front sight relatively arranged as the bisector of the base and vertical angle of the triangle.

The present invention has particular reference to certain details of construction which go to make up a perfected rear sight, the general form and principle of operation of which are the same as disclosed in my prior patent.

In the accompanying drawings, a sight is shown embodying the several features of my invention.

In these drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the sight mounted upon a suitable base. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view thereof, on an enlarged scale. Fig. 4 is a front view of the sight proper. Fig. 5 is a side view and Fig. 6 a plan view of the same.

Referring now to the drawings, 1 represents a base of any suitable or well known form. As here shown, it is provided on the underside with a dovetail lug 2, to enter a transverse groove in the barrel of the arm and on the upper side, with a cross groove 3, preferably under cut or of dovetail form to receive the rear sight l, which is securely held therein in centered relation to the barrel of the arm by means of a set-screw 5.

The sight proper consists of a suitable length of tubing of triangular cross section,

which is split to provide an opening 6 at the apex of the triangle, throu 'h which a clear and unobstructed View 0 the front sight may be had and the bead thereof readily brought into line for point blank firing. By giving the tube suflicient length, requisite strength is obtained, which permits the thickness of the metal forming the legs 7 of the triangle, to be reduced to such an extent as to present a hair-line appearance, when the sight is in use. The ends of the tube are cut away transversely of its length as indicated at 8, to form a dovetail lug 9, adapted to fit closely in the cross groove 3 of the base 1, in which it is secured in clamped relation by the set screw 5, as above stated.

Some of the main advantages of the present form of sight over that disclosed in my prior patent are as follows: A clear and unobstructed sight opening is provided at the apex of the triangle between the adjoining ends of the legs. The legs and base of the triangle in being formed in one piece and thus rigidly connected, are stronger and cannot be relatively displaced by accidental blows or work loose in use. The manner of mounting the sight and securing it in position, insures permanence once the sight is properly adjusted in centered relation upon the barrel of the arm.

Having, therefore, described my invention, I claim:

A sight for firearms comprising a tube of triangular cross section, said tube being split longitudinally to present with hair-line effect when viewed end on, the converging sides of a triangle which terminate in separated relation at the apex to provide an intervening sight opening between the extreme ends thereof.
