PORTABLE HOISTING APPARATUS.

This lnvention relates to new and useful improvements in portable. hoisting apparatus and has for its object to provide a de vice of this character adapted for use around oil and gas wells to hoist and transfer the tools from one place to another, thus when the user is sharpening a bit they may transfer the same from the forge to the anvil and then to the tempering tub with but very little trouble and in a very short space of time.
Another object of the invention is to pro- K vide a device of this character which can be easily transported from place to place.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will possess advantages in points of efficiency and durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,

In the present embodiment of my invention I provide a pair of runner beams 1 having a platform 2 secured upon one end and the other end of said runners being secured together by means of the transverse pieces 3.
Mounted on one end of the beams 1 is a vertically disposed standard 4 having the brace members 5 secured to the upper end thereof by means of the cross bolt 6, the lower ends of said brace members being secured to the runner beams 1. Clevis loops 7 are secured to the ends of the runner beams so that a whiflletree may be attached thereto to haul the device from place to place. An angle bar 8 is mounted on the bolt 6 and provided with an opening in the outer end Specification of Letters Patent.

thereof to receive the hook 9 which is attached to the anchoring rope 10, the outer end of said rope being provided with a loop 11, whereby the same may be anchored by means of a suitable stake 12. The upper end of the standard 4: is provided with a centrally arranged bore 18 adapted to receive the downwardly turned end 14: formed on the end of the horizontal portion 15 of a crane 16, the brace member 17 of the crane having a ring 18 formed on its end and encircling the standard l, said ring being held in place by means of the adjustable collar 19 which is adjustably secured to the stand ard by means of the set screw 20. A rod 21 is provided having one end looped as shown at 22 and adapted to engage over the hooked portion 23 of the crane 16. Swiveled on the lower end of the rod is a U-shaped member 2 1, having a lever beam 25 pivoted between its lower ends and a bolt 26 is passed through the ends of said. member and through the lever to act as a fulcrum on which the lever swings. The lever beam 25 is provided at its pivot point with a plurality of openings 27 so that said lever may be adjusted according to the various weights. A loop 28 is pivoted to one end of said lever beam, and a chain 29 is suspended in said loop, having a pulley 30 connected to one end by means of the swivel connection 31, and a hook 32 is secured to the other end of said chain adapted to engage with the links thereof to prevent the chain from pulling out of the loop when any strain is applied to the pulley. An endless chain 38 is suspended from the pulley 30 and is adapted to be secured to the object to be raised.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art of well drilling that a bit may be suspended by a double wrap of the chain around the upper end of the bit.
In using this device the chain 33 is secured to the tool, and by pulling down on the handle end 34 of the lever, the tool may be raised and placed in the forge 84 and from there it can be swung to the anvil by turning the crane 16, and thence to the tem pering tub.
It will be obvious that this device may -be put to other uses than those already described, in fact it. may be used for pulling stumps, hoisting hogs for scalding, or any other purpose desired.
While I have shown and described the preferred construction of my device, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice Without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope thereof.
Having thus described this invention, What is claimed is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a pair of runner beams suitably connected, a vertically disposed standard mounted on one of said beams, brace members secured to the upper end of said standard, the lower ends of said brace members being rigidly secured to the runner beams, a crane mounted on said standard for swinging movement, a rod, having one end looped and engaging over the outer end oi said crane, a U-shaped member swiveled on the lower end of said rod, a lever beam pro vided With a plurality of openings and pivotally mounted between the loWer ends of said U-shaped member, a loop pivoted to one end of said lever, and means carried by said loop adapted to be secured to the object to be hoisted, said object being hoisted by exerting pressure on the handle end of the lever.

In a device of the character described, the combination of a pair of runner beams suitably connected, a vertically disposed standard mounted thereon, means for rigidly supporting said standard, said standard having a centrally arranged bore formed in its upper end, a crane having one of its inner ends bent downwardly and rotatably mounted in said bore, a ring formed on the other of said inner ends and encircling the standard, an adjustable collar mounted on said standard to hold said ring in place, a pivotally mounted lever beam carried by the outer end of said crane, and means carried by said beam for hoisting various objects.
