JAMES HENRY TOLSON, 0F C LAREMORE, OKLAHOMA.
GELLAR-DOOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
A Patented July 23, 1912.
Application filed September 25, 19114. Serial No. 651,266.
at Claremore, in the county of Rogers and -`tate of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and usefull Improvements in Cellar- Doors, of which the following is a speciication. This invention relates to improvements in cellar doors` and has for its particular object to provide a device of that character` which will be absolutely water tight or nonleakable.
A :further object is to provide a .door which automatically locks when in a'closed position.
W ith the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of the parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing, and part-icularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion. siniI and minor details mayy be iiiadewithin the scope otl the claims without departing t'i'om the spirit oi' sacrificing any o't the advantages of the invention. y
ln the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a: perspective view oi my improved door,
and Fig. 2 isv a vertical longitudinal section taken on the meeting line ot the doors she/wing the edge ot' one ot' said doors in elevation.
l'ii'lt'e numerals ol reference designate corresponding parts in all ot the figures of the drawing.
'l`lie herein described improved construction is especially adapted to that class of eellardoors which are mounted upon a t'rame or base and positioned. at an inclination relative to the ground or pavement. butitl will lie. understood that-'thesaine will operate to an advantage on horizontally positioned doors.
ln the. preferred form shown, a rectangular base il is providtwl which surrounds the opening ot the pit or cellar` and whose top surface is inclined downwardly from the wall o'IE the building 'to its front-pside, and having mounted thereon a pair of doors 4 and 5 which a re. adapted t'or bodily slidin and pivotal movements. Said doors-"t and 'o are hinged at their outer edges to rods ('i, supported in suitable bearings 7 secured to the sides of the base, said.bearings'being' spaced apart a predetermined distance at the ends of the rods to form stops for the leaves 8 of the hinges that are secured to the edges of the doors and adapted to slidably engageV the rods G lbetweensaid bearings.
Secured to the base and the fall and adaptedto project over the upper ends of the doors and under which said upper ends are adapted to slide, is a water-shed 9. which is provided centrally with a recess 10, to accommodate the cleat or weather strip 1l, which is secured to the edge of the door t and overlaps the door 5. and is provided with a depending lug 1.2 for a purpose hereinafter described. The base is recessed on both sides, as shown at 13, ,in which is loosely placed the rollerslet upon which the doors are supported and moved back and forth.
To prevent the doors from sliding from beneath the water-shed, they `are provided on their midersides with stops 15, which are adapted to engage the spring pawls 1G, and thereby holdI the doors beneath the watershed. As thus constructed itwill be observed that by removing the pawls 1G from engagement: with the stops 15. the doors will automatically slide by gravity from beneath the water-shed and can be swung open upon -t-heir hinges, and lwhen closed and forced upwardly the. spring catches comprising the pawls 16 and the stops 15, wvill'fautonuitically lock the doors inl a protected position.
Thus ispi-ovided a non-lealnible cellar-door.
Iircertaininstances where heavy 'doors are required, means lia ve been provided Ior sliding said doors beneath the water-shockV with the slot 1S and the lever forced back- .l 'Ward to the position shown at. 21 1n Fig. 2,
when'the doors will be automatically locked as above described. After the doorshave been slid into the closed position, the bolt'19 is released from 'the lever and the y lever thrown back to normal position. A lifting 'hingessecured to said base and a door L level' for one slde 1s all that is necessary, as comprisingI i base, a Vallei-shed secured ilo the depending lug l2 on one door engages one Vend of said l'wase,l1i11ges secured lo said the other (lool-,1nd closes it :it the saine time. Having thus fully described the invention,
' 1. 'A device of the character described,
comprising a baise provided with recesses and rollers loosely placed in said recesses, a
watershed secured to one end of said base,
buse, e dom adapted to slide on said hinges` a lever pivoled to said base, and n bolt mounted on said door und adapted to be tlnmvn into engagement with said lever.
ln testimony whereof l affix my signatine in presence of two Witnesses.
