SIGNAL-INDICATING DEVICE FOR RAILWAYS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDOUARD DEBBIE, a citizen of the French Republic, and a resident of 12 Rue des Capucines, Paris, France, merchant, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relatingto Signal-Indicating Devices for Railways, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention has for its object a signalindicating device for railways, and has more particularly in view to secure the transmission of the track-signals to the engine-driver, while providing a safety-device which causes the automatic stopping of the railwaytrains.
In order that my said invention may be fully understood and readily carried into practice by anyone skilled in the art, I will now proceed to describe the same more particularly, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicatecorresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1' is a perspective view of a railway-track provided with my device; Fig. 2 is a detail-view of the same; Figs. 3 and 4 are a front view and a vertical section respectively of the device intended to be built up on the locomotive; Fig. 5 shows this device-in posit-ion on the locomotive; 6 and 7 are an end-view and a side-view re spectively of an element of the controllingdevice located upon the track; and Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the operating mechanism.
On the side of the track a and, preferably, parallel thereto is arranged an operating cable or rod I) provided, at one of its ends, with a controllin, -leve r o, and earrying, at its other end, supported by a pulley This cable has, at suitableintervals, operating-cams f, 1, ii, for instance three in number, eorrespmuling to the number of the sections of protection provided between the -.hstant-signal and the absolute stopping signal. 'lhese cams have suitably ditt'erent lengths. and it it is as sumed, for instance, that the trains are to be run in the direction of the arrow in Fig. l. the length of the rain 11. being taken as the unit of length, the rain I shall have a double length and the. cam a triple one. Each of a bell-crank lever 2' (Figs. 6 and 7) pivoted at j on the track and the free end is of which is suitably bent up.
On the locomotive and in the reach of the engine-driver is a slide-box m closed by a cover n having therein a vertical slot 0 throughwhich can work a tappet p integral with a. slide 1 located in the box In and the lower end of which rests upon a set of blocks or rollers 1* made of any breakable material, such, for instance, as porcelain, glass, burned earthenware or the like, and the lowermost one of which partially protrudes from the box through an aperture .9 in the latter.
In its raised position, the slide 9 conceals three ditferently colored disks t, u, 4), located in the rear wall of the box on and said slide,

at its upper part, a hook a: with which engages a cable or any other like member connected with the steam supply of the whistle 2 as shown in Fig. 3. The t-appet p is adapted to come into-contact, by its lower inclined face, with a bar 3 held in the position illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 by a counterweight z and operating a cock Z controlling the compressed air brake.
The working is as follows: For putting the apparatus into operative condition, theslide q is at first raised whereafter the rollers 1' are inserted into the box m through an aperture (not shown), which rollers are thus superposed to each other, in the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3. V hen all said rollers have been set into position, the slide q is dropped and thus held at a Sullicicnt height for concealing the disks t, u, o. The lowermost roller 1- occupies now the position shown in Fig. 3, thus protrudingalittle distance below the lower edge of the box. \Vhen it is desired to order the engine driver to slacken the speed of the train or to call the attention ofsaid driver to a tracksignaling apparatus, the lever c is released sothat the cam f comes into engagement with one of the levers i. Said lever assumes then the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. ('3. and its end is places itself in the path of the roller 1* carried on the locomotive. When the latter reaches the point indicated by the signaling apparatus, the roller 7' strikes against the end A: of the lever i which causes the breaking off of said roller. The fragments thereof fall down at once through said cams may come into engagement with the lower part of the box and a general dropping of the remaining rollers and of the slide 9 takes place, this latter assuming the position shown in Fig. 3, wherein it leaves exposed the upper disk t, while causing at the same-time a partial opening of the cock of the whistle which calls the attention of the en ine driver. When the latter has fulfilled thedirections given bythe disk or Sig-- naling apparatus, he puts again all the parts. in their initial condition by lifting the slide which he holds into its position by insertmg a fresh roller into the box at. For transmitting a more imperative order, the lever 0 is released to a greater extent for the purpose of causing the lever operated by the cam g to be raised, the firstcam continuing talget upon its own lever to hold the same in'the osition shown by dotted lines in Fig. 6, Whil e-thecam 9 brings also the corresponding lever into this same position. When the locomotive will have passed these two levers, two rollers 1- will have been broken, thus causing the slide 9 to drop, so as to uncover two disks t, n, and affecting at the same time a wider opening of the steam inlet cock of the whistle, whereby the sounding of the latter is altered and rendered more intense. At last, for .ordering the absolute stopping, the lever 0 is completely rcleased whereby the three cams g, h, are. brought into engagement with t eir respective levers for lowering each of them into the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 6, so that, when the locomotive has passed the cam h, three rollers have been broken, thus causing the three disks t, u, q), to become exposed and further increasing the acuteness and intensity of the whistle sound. Simultaneousl at the time of the breaking of the third roller, the incline p of the slide q acts upon the handle 3/ of the brake cock, to operate thebrake.
This device'secures a great reliability of working owing to the provision of Weakly resisting rollers, the breaking of which will easily take place by their striking against the. movable levers, and the different sounds uttered .b -the whistle will draw the attention of t e engine driver, while indicating at the same time to him which signal he must'ob'ey. The ohms f, g, It and the lovers which they operate may be of any approved construction and their arrangement be varied according to the peculiar requirements. The box m might be located in any suitable place on the locomotive.
' What I claim is:
1. In a signal indicating device tor railway trains, a slide-box carried by the loco motive having an openingfin its bottom, bodies of breakable material in said slidebox, means for holding the lowermost body protruding out through the opening of the slide-box; a lever arranged on he track for breaking the lowermost body and permitting the ones located above to drop; and means for bringing said lever in the path of the lowermost breakable body.
2. In a signal indicating device for railway trains, the combination with a slide box having an opening in'its bottom and inclosing superimposed breakable bodies, said box being provided with means for holding the lowermost body protruding through the lopening oft-he box, of means for breaking with means for holding the lowermost one.

6. In a signal indicating device for railway trains, a box carried by the locomotive, said box having an opening in its bottom and an opening in one side of its upper end,
a plurality of colored disks in the upper part of the box opposite the opening thereof, a plurality of superposed fragile bodies in the box, the box being provided with means for holding the-lowermost one with its lower portion protruding through the opening in the bottom of the box, a slide "for controlling the air brake, and means for operating the cock from said slide.
7. In a signal indicating device for railway trains,va box carried by thelocomotive and having an opening in its bottom and an opening in one side at the upper end, a plurality of colored disks in the box opposite the opening at the upper end thereof, a plurality 0f superposed fragile bodies in the box, the box being provided with means for holding the lowermost one with its lower portion protruding through the opening in the bottom of the box, a slide in the box and resting upon the uppermost fragile body, the 20 slide" being adapted to close the opening at the top of the box, a plurality of levers on the track for breaking the fragile body protruding through the opening in the bottom of the box, on operating rod or cable, and a plurality of cams for successively operating the levers and operated by the rod or cable.
