nEoErTAoLE.
I Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 18, 1911. Serial No. 615,213.
Patented July 16,1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it-knownthat I, WILLiAM J. HAMIL- TON, a citizen of the United States, and. a resident of Franklin, in the county of Ve nango andv State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Receptacle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.-
My invention relates to receptacles, and. more particularly to barrels, and it has for its object to provide one with a lurality 'of. side members having flanges w ich are engaged by sleeves for holding the side members together and against the heads Iwhich are disposed in croze in the side mem- 'ers.
Additional objects of the invention areto.
provide eye members disposed between the anges for strengthening the receptacle, the eye members being engaged by the sleeves, and to provide the heads with bent flanges which are disposed over the chimes of the barrel, and which engage flanges on the outer side of the barrel.
Still other objects of the invention will appearin the following com lete specification, in which the preferred orm of the invention is disclosed.
In the drawings similar characters of'reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing I my invention embodied in a barrel; Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;-
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of the barrel in section, showing a modified form ofthe invention; and Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 4.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that a plurality. of curved side members 10 are provided, the side members 10 having flanges 11 at their opposite sides,
sleeves 12 being provided having flan cs 13 1 which are normally disposed aroun the flanges 11. The side members 10 have croze 14, at both ends, in which the peripheries, of
' heads 15 are dis osed.
It will be'un erstoodthat when the peripheries of the heads 15 aredisposed in the croze 14, they sides. 10 may be drawn and held together by the engagement of the sleeves 12 with the flanges 11, so that the heads 15 will be prevented'from becoming displaced. Flanges 16 extend outwardly 1 7 of the side members at the outer sides of the said side members '10. The extremities of these flanges 16 are bent arounda core member v18, to ,forniggag.
from the peripheries of the said heads 15,
the said flanges being bent over the chimes 10, and downwardly clamping means for engaging recesses 19 in the outer sides of the side memberslO.
By "referring to. Fig. 1 of the drawings ,it will be seen that the flanges 16 are formed in two sections spaced from each other, at
each end, sothat the sleeves mav slide there between.
In theconstruction shown in F ig,4 of the drawings, an eye member 19 is disposed between the flanges 11,the inner flanges 20 of the" eye member being disposed against the inner side of the side members 10, and the outer flanges 21 of the eye members 19 being bent over andaround the flan es 11. The eye members 19 are provided or aflording additional strength. In all other respects the form of the invention shown in Figs. 4 and 5 corresponds with the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1, 2 and3.
' It will be understood that when 'the peripheries of the heads 15 are disposed in the croze 14, in the side members 10, they will be firmly held in this position, when the sleeves 12 are slid over the flanges ll togrip and hold the side members 10 together.
'Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a receptacle, members having substantially straight neighboring flanges, at opposite sides, and bent back and substantially parallel with the members, an eye member slidabl disposed between the flanges and having a s eeve bent around the flanges for holding} the members together, and flanges on. t e eye member for engaging the sides of the first-mentioned'members.
2. In a receptacle, members having substantially straight nei hboring flanges at op- 100 posite edges, and bent back and substantially parallel with the members, and members ,slidably disposed between the neighboring members and havin means disposed around the flanges for hol ing the first-mentioned members together.
3. In a receptacle two side members having longitudinal flanges disposed side by side and projecting from one side of the said members, the side members having a croze at one set of ends, a head member the periphery of which is disposed in the croze, and an additional member slidablz l ing longitudinal flanges disposed side by side and projecting from one side of the said members, the side members having a croze at one set of ends, a head member the pericphery of which is disposed in the croze, an
ditional member slidably disposed between the flanges, a sleeve on the additional memher for engaging the flanges, flanges on the said additional member for engaging the. other sides of the said side members, and a flange on the head member: bent over the ends of the side members and engaging the outer surfaces of the side members, there being an opening in the head and last-mentioned flange, for introducing and removingthe said additional member.
5. In a receptacle side members having flanges along longitudinal edges, there being a croze in the members at their ends, head members the peripheries of which are disposed in the croze, sleeves for engaging the flanges for holding the side members together and the head membersin position, and flanges on the head members bent over the edges of the receptacle and engaging the outer surfaces of the receptacle at the opposite sides below the horizontal plane of the croze. v
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM J HAMILTON.
