LZGHTING DEVICE.
LllSLSS T 0 all wit-0m may concern Be-it known that I, WESLEY E. COCHRAN, 3 a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented anew and usej ful Improvement in Lighting )evices, of which the following is a specification, the; principle of the invention being herein ex-- plained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as j to distinguish i from other inventions.
The present invention relates in general 1 to lighting devices, and its particular object is the provisicn of a lamp fixture which i is not only portable when electrically con nected with a source of current, but which may also be dismantled wh n disconnected so that it may be conveniently packed and transported.
It is also any object of this invention to provide such a lamp device which is capable of a wide variety of adjustments.
In said annexed drawing :-Figure 1 is a perspective View of a device GIDbO-(lYlllf' the invention; Fig. 2- is a broken vertical section of the base and arm; 3 is a central section. through the arm and socket holder, and Fig, 4i is rear perspective view of -1 the base. 4
The invention provides a base 1 which may he of any desired ornamental form,
but which must necessarily be readily movable. The ase is provided with a cylindrical opening 2 which may be conveniently formed by providing the ease with an. upright post 3 through which the hole 2 may be termed. is curved arm 4 engages theaperture Zand 1S s-hdable therethrough ion- 4 I gitudmally of the arm, and is also rotatable Specification of Letters Patent.
the present invention, them.

position relatively to the base by means, preferably of a set screw 5.
A socket 6 is adjustably mounted upon the arm 4-, and this mounting is conveniently accomplished by providing-the socket wit-h a member 7 having a transverse cylindrical opening 8 through which thearm extends. The socket is thereby slidable longitudinally of the 'arm and also rotatable thereon, sition, preferably by a set screw 9. socket holding member 7 is also provided, near the end at which it is secured .to the socket proper, with a transverse opening 10 &
through which the'lead wires may be conveniently extended. The socketlti carries a lamp 11, and a shade 12 which is mounted so as to rotatable about the axis of the lamp.
It is contemplated that the base may be provided on its under side with a recess 13 in which is hinged a ring 14.
'When the'jdevlce is in use the base. may
stand upright, as shown in Fig. 1, with the ring 14 swung backinto the recess 13,'oi the ringmaybe swung out and the base hung thereby on a vertical wan.
opening" 2 to any. desired position and it may be rotated into any desired angular position, and the set screw will then be thrust in to secure the arm in any selected position. The socket may be slid to any desired position on the .arm, and it may be rotated into any angular position on the arm and then secured in selected position by the set screw 9. At the same time the shade 12 may be rotated into desiredposition to reilect the lightin the desired direction.
It will thus be appreciated that the deviceof this invention provides for an almost limi'lcss series of adjustments, for when in use, for instance, on a desk, the arm may be so adjusted in the base and the socket so adjusted on the arm that the device will accommodate itself to any condition, or to any desire or" the user. Furthermore, it
may be hung on a vertical wall in addition to its almost universal adjustment. Again it may be used as a downwardly extending lamp, seen a piano, for instance, in which the base may stand on the piano top and the arm be swung to a position the reverse of that shown in Fig. 1. The openand may be secured in selected po- The "Iii either lease, the arm 4: may be slid through the ing 10 and the longitudinal opening 15 in the socket holder renders the wiring of the device a simple matter.
In addition to providing a portable lamp capable of a Wide range of adjustment, the invention also provides a lamp which. may be readily dismantled and transported. lt is designed that the Wire 16 shall be provided at its end With a connecting plug, and when this is removed from a permanent socket, the socket holder 7 may be removed from the arm and the arm be removed .from the base, and all of the elements of the device may then be conveniently packed inany small. receptacle so that it may be readily carried by a traveler. When it is again desired to use the lamp it may be quickly assembled, so that it is only necessary to insert the plug in a permanent socket again in order to render the lamp ready for use.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any of the following claims, or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim'as my invention 1. In a lighting device, the combination of a movable base;-an arm formed substantially on the are of a circle and curvilinearly slidable relatively to said base; means for securing the arm to the base in selected position; a socket slidable along the arm;
and means for securing the socket to the arm in selected position.
in a lighting device, the combination of a movable base; an arm lormed substan tially on the arc of a circle and curvilinearly slidable relatively to said base, the arm being also rotatable relatively to said base on an axis transverse to the axis of the curve in which it is slidablej means for securing the arm to the base in selected position; a socket slidable along the arm and also r0- tatable thereon; and means for securing the socket in selected position.
In a lighting device, the combination of a movable base provided with a cylindrical aperture formed on an axis substantially parallel with the supporting surface of the base; an arm formed substantially on the are of a circle and extending through said aperture, the arm being curvilinearly slidahle therethrough and rotatatie therein on the axis or the aperture; I'HOM1S 'EGY securing the arm in selected position; a socketprovided with a transvesely extending cylindrical aperture loosely engaging said arm, so that the socket is slidable along the arm and rotatable thereon; and means for securing the socket in selected position.
Signed by me this 25th day of March, 1912. v
