PROPELLING MECHANISM FOR AEROCRAFT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1912 Application filed March 15, 191 Serial No. 614,630.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAURICE FERDINAND DE Rnnox DE commence, a citizen of the French Republic, residing at Paris, in
5 France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Propelling Mechanism for Aerocraft, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improved mechanism for propelling flying machines or other aerocraft in which the flight is effected by means of "movlng wings and consists in the novel features of constructions, combinations and arrangements. of parts here inafter fully described and specifically defined in the appended claim.
A practical embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the annexed drawings which shows a flying device in the form of a bird, the action and movement of the wings therekof being similar to those of a bird.
' are each provided with two cranks B, B
propelling device is intended;
keyed or set at an angle relatively to each other, the extent of angularity depending on the particular application for which the The. forward cranks B should always bein advance of the cranks I3 in the direction of rota-' tion, in order that the connecting rods Z coupled-to said cranks and actuated thereby will raise or lower the arms a, before the action of the rear connecting rods 13 acting on the rods Z and connected to other arms a. This causes the raising or lowering of the arms a to take place at difierent moi'nents to the raising or lowering of the arms a which action produces the warping of the wing surfaces which are mounted on and stretched between the said arms a, a
The wing arms of a, a are mounted on and' oscillate about a single shaft '6, placed above and centrally between the shafts m, m and the rods Z, Z are pivotally attached to the the axis of the shaft 0, to provide for synchronism of the oscillations and equality of the strokes 0f the wings.
In Figs. 2 and 3 there is represented a toy in the form of a bird, to which the in. vention is shown as applied. The action of the principal parts is the'same as hereinbefore described.
The motor is formed by two twisted rubher hands f, j fixed respectively at one end to hooks f at the ends of the shafts m, m and at the other end to a transverse hooked bar 7, situated at the rear end of the stay (l formingthe lower part of the body of the bird, the upper part being formed by the shaft 0. A crank handle or the like n. mounted on the shaft 0 serves to twist or wind up-therubber cords by rotating the shafts m,"m, through the intermeshing pairs of bevel gears P, P and 1', 1' Legs c are fixed to the stay (Z and a covering a of paper, goldbeaterskin, silk, light fabric or other appropriate material is glued to framework of the wings and the body. An elastic cord connects the wings and passes under the stay (Z and helps to bring back the wings to their lower position.
device. r
The mechanism described and illustrated ean'be applied for example to a flying machine driven by a powerful motor and in general to aerocraft of all sizes.
.Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States'is:-
In an aerocraft, the combination with two wings on longitudinal pivotal axes, two pairs of pivotally mounted arms movable in transverse planes one behind, the other at an interval apart and collectively attached two to each wing, two shafts rotatable in opposite directions, cranks on said shafts, one for each arm, set at different relative angles, and connecting rods operatively coupling the cranks to the respectlve arms.
