To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ISAAC E. PALMER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Bedstead-Supports for Couch-Hammocks, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention relates to bedstead sup ports for couch hammocks.

In order that the principle of the inven tion may be readily understood, I have disclosed certain embodiments thereof in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of one form of bedstead support embodying my invention and having a couch hammock supported thereon; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of one of the end supports; Fig. 4 is a transverse section through an end bar of the couch hammock frame and showing the suspension end connected thereto; Fig. 5 is an enlarged view partially in vertical section and partially in end elevation of one of the end supports for the couch hammock frame; Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the support shown in Fig. 5; Fig. 6 is a similar view of a modified form of support; Fig. 7 is a plan view of one ofthe end supports and the adjacent portion of the couch hammock frame; Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 7 of a modified form of the invention; Fig. 9 is a side elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 8 looking from the outside of the support; Fig. lO is a similar view looking from the inside of the support; Fig. 11 is a detail in plan of a further modified form of the invention showing the parts in locked position; and Fig. 12 is a similar view showing the parts in unlocked position.

My invention comprehends means for supporting a couch hammock frame in such manner as to render it a bed structure yet readily permitting the couch hammock to be used as such. In other words, the couch hammock embodying my invention may, in accordance with the disclosed embodiments thereof, be readily employed either as a couch hammock or as a bed structure. To that end, I have herein disclosed that form of my invention embodying distinct head and foot bed pieces or supports upon which the couch hammock frame may be positioned and to which it is preferably locked or otherwise secured, so as to hold the parts firm when in use.

Referring first to that form of my invention shown in Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive, the frame of the couch hammock is composed of end members 11 and side members 22 suitably connected in any preferred manner to form a rigid skeleton frame which may be provided with any suitable seating, as of wire cloth, strands or the like, not herein necessary to disclose. In order to suspend the hammock, I provide suitable suspension ends which may be cloth or other flexible strips or members 3-3 provided at their lower edges with spreaders 4 and hooks 5, by which they may be detachably engaged with the end members 1 of the frame. Obviously, however, any other suitable means may be provided to suspend the hammock, the hammock body if desired being a continuous piece overlying or underlying the frame as desired. Upon the couch hammock frame I support any suitable mattress and may provide the hammock with upstanding flexible sides 6 if desired.

The hammock thus far described is of any approved type, as it will be understood that my invention is not dependent upon the form or type of hammock, but is adapted for use with any approved type of hammock.

In order to permit the couch hammock to be supported from the floor or ground instead of being suspended as a hammock; that is, in order to adapt the couch hammock for use as a bed structure, I provide head and foot supports hereinafter termed end supports, and which are preferably wholly distinct and independent from each other. In other words, I provide preferably separate end supports to receive the couch hammock frame, which latter constitutes prefer- 100 ably the only means for connecting or uniting said end supports. Obviously these end supports may be largely varied within the scope of my invention.

Each end support constituting the pre- 105 ferred embodiment of my invention consists of upright or side members 77 and connecting bars 88 herein shown as metal rods. If desired, bracing cross pieces 99 may be employed connected at their ends to 110 other suitable form of securing means may, however, be employed.

Obviously the end supports may be of any suitable structure and the looking or other means to secure the couch hammock frame thereto may be provided either upon said end-supports or upon the couch hammock frame.

When the hammock is used as a bed structure, the suspension ends 3 may if desired be passed over the rods or bars 8 of the end pieces, and if desired I may provide means to secure the upper end of said suspension ends 3 to said end supports, thus giving a finished effect to said end supports and at the same time supporting the suspension ends 3 in a convenient manner.

If desired the shelf or ledge member of the end supportsmay be rigidly secured to or form an integral part of such end supports. In Fig. 6 I have shown in side elevation an end support, the member 7 whereof has rigidly secured thereto a metallic shell like member 11 having the general form of the corresponding member shown in Fig. 6. Obviously-the entire structure including the members 7 and the members 11 may be formed integrally and of metal.

It is obvious from the foregoing description that I have provided simple yet effective means for supporting a couch hammock frame as a bed structure. It is evident that the couch hammock frame is firmly held against movement in every direction and that therefore the couch hammock when used as a bed structure is securely held in position.

Having thus described one illustrative embodiment of my invention, I desire it to be understood that although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being set forth in the following claims.

Claims 1. Means for supporting a couch hammock frame as a bed structure consisting of independent head and foot bedstead members, a couch hammock frame independent thereof and consisting of side and end members detachably supported by said bedstead members and constituting the sole means for connecting the latter and frame securing means carried by one of said parts at each end of the frame.

2. A couch hammock frame and an end support therefor and independent thereof, said end support consisting of an upright portion having a ledge-like frame-end receiving member, and frame securing means carried by one of said parts and coacting with said frame and said ledge-like member.

3. An end support for a couch hammock frame consisting of an upright portion having a ledge like member to receive the end of a couch hammock frame and provided with means detachably to secure said couch hammock frame in position.

4. Means for supporting a couch hammock frame as a bed structure consisting of opposite end supports to receive a couch hammock frame, and means detachably to lock said frame thereto.

5. Means for supporting a couch hammock frame as a bed-structure, consisting of head and foot bedstead or end members, and a couch hammock frame, said members being collapsible and having means for detachably securing said frame thereto.

6. An end support for a couch hammock frame consisting of an upright portion having a ledge-like frame-end receiving member collapsible against said upright portion, said support having frame securing means.

7. Means for supporting a couch hammock frame as a bed structure consisting of an end support having couch hammock frame supporting means, and locking jaws co-acting with said means.

8. Means for supporting a couch hammock frame as a bed structure consisting of an end support having couch hammock frame supporting arms, levers pivoted to said arms and having jaws, and means to operate said levers.

9. An end support for a couch hammock frame consisting of an uprightportion having hammock frame receiving arms extending therefrom, said arms having frame positioning and holding stops.

10. An end support for a couch hammock frame consisting of an upright portion having hammock frame receiving arms 11 extending therefrom, said arms having blocks 14 providing recesses for the reception of a transverse member of said couch hammock frame, and means positively to secure the couch hammock frame to said support. a
