CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 18, 1912.
Application filed February 1, 1912. Serial No. 674,746.
To all whom it may conccrn' Be it known that I, FRANZ A. HINsKY, a citizen of the United States, and residing at H oboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairs, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invent-ion relates to chairs, and the object thereof is to provide a device of this clasd whichis particularly designed for use as an infa'nts chair either for ordinary purposes, or as a table chair, but which may also be used by anyone as a bath, or bath tub chair; and with these andother objects in view the invention consists in a chair of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l. is a sectional side viewshowing my improved chair used as an infants table chair, in which use it is supported on an ordinary dining room chair. Fig. 2 a front view of my improved chair :Fig. 3 a'plan view showing parts in dotted lines and parts inv full lines :Fig. 4 a longitudinal central View, of one end of a bath tub and showing my improved chair used as a bath tub chair :-Fig.5 a partial sectionon the line 5-5 of Fig. 2: and-Fig. 6 a partial section on the line 66 of Fig. 3.
In the practice of my invention I provide a chair of the classand for the purpose specified, comprising a seat portion a, front legs Z), and a back frame 0, consisting of upright side members 0, and cross bars 0 and c, and the front legs I), and the upright side members a of the back frame 0 are formed int'xgrally, of metal, and connected by horizontal side members' c which support the seat portion a.
The top ends of the side members 0 of the back frame a are provided with. downwardly and backwardly directed hooks of, and the fronts of theside members oft-he hack frame (1 are provided at a pre-detcr- 1l'lill()(.l distance above the seat a with jawuiciuhm-s of in which are pivoted spring arms form, thelonger parts 6 thereof being pivoted to the jaws (Z and the shorter parts a of said arms being directed downwardly, and being provided with reduced extensions 6 adapted to enter keepers f secured to the opposite sides of the seat a.
The back legs 9 of my improved chair are connected by a cross rod 9 mounted bencath the back portion of the seat a, and
passing through keepers g secured to the ing drawing I have also shown at i an or inarydinin room chair comprising a seat 1?, front legs 2 baokilegs z, and aback frame 2" havinga-top cross bar 2', and in the use of Tiny improved chair as an infants table chair it is mounted on the chair '11 as shown in Fig.- 1, the hooks c engaging the top cross bar 2', and the legs 9 beingeither in the position shown in full lines or in that shown in dotted lines in said figure this position of the legs g being determined by the height of the back i of the chair 2'.
In the accompanying drawing Figs. 2, 3
and 5 show the position of the parts of my improved chair when in use by an infant on the floor, and in Fig. 4 I have shown my imroved chair .used as a bath chair or ina bath tub; and in this use of said chair the 1 arms 6 are detached from the keepers f and are swung outwardly and u Wardly and engaging with the sides j o the'bath tub'j, and the hooks 0 of the chair are engaged with the top rim of the head end of the bath tub as shown at 9' while the hook it is detached from the rod g with which the legs g are connected, and said legs are swung into the position shown in said figure. The, arms a are so formed that their natural resiliency, or spring action, will normally hold them in the position shown in Fig. 1,' but the said resiliency will also permit of their being raised, and swung into the position shown in Fig. 4, but this swinging of the arms 6 into the position shown in. Fig, 4 isnot anes- 110 scntial feature in the use of my improved chair as the chair'mayfbe sed by a young.
person without this movement of said arms, and if desired the said arms may be detached from. the seat a and swung outwardly against the sides of the tub only.
In the accompanying drawing and foregoing description I have shown and described the preferred form of, and preferred method of constructing my improved chair but it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction, arrangement and operation of the various parts of the chair maybe made within the scope of the appended claim, without departing frongythe spirit of my invention or sacrificwiligitis -advantages.
Having fully described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A chair comprising a seat, and front and back logs, the front legs being rigidly connected with the seat, and the back legs being adapted to fold forwardly, and being provided with means for holding them in operative position, the back of the chair being provided at the top thereof with backwardly and downwardly directed hooks, and L-shaped spring arms pivoted to the back of the chair, and adapted to swing laterally, and detach'ably connected with the front side portion of the seat.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 31st day of January 1912. FRANZ A. HINSKY. Witnesses: I p
