- This invention relates to a means for absorbing the nicotin from the tobacco in a smoking pipe, and the object is to provide an absorbent tablet to be dropped into the bowl of the pipe before filling it with tobacco. MEANS FOR ABSORBING N IOTIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1912.
Application filed December 20, 1910. Serial No. 598,318.
This invention relates to a means for absorbing the nicotin from the tobacco in a smoking pipe, and the object is to provide an absorbent tablet to be dropped into the bowl of the pipe before filling it with tobacco. This tablet will effectually absorb all the nicotin released therefrom and thus prevent it from entering the mouth of the smoker. In order to accomplish this object, I have invented the absorbent tablet illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which, 1 I
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a smoking pipe having an absorbent tablet in the bowl thereof, which together with the stem of the pipe is shownin the illustration, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the tablets about full size.
Referring to the accompanying drawings 1 is a smoking pipe having a bowl 2 and a stem 3. In the bottom of the bowl ,is loosely seated an absorbent tablet 4. This tablet is composed of plaster of Paris and charcoal in any proportion found to be most effectual for the purpose desired. I have found that when the ingredients contain 2 parts of charcoal and 1 part of plaster of Paris, that ex cellent results are obtained.
The plaster of Paris, as is well known, is extremely sensitive to moisture, its power to absorb moisture being very great, and the addition of the charcoaladds tly to the porosity of the tablet preventing the outer surface of the tablet from becoming filled or non-porous from the action of the moisture.
The mechanical advantage of providing a tablet composed essentially of plaster-of- Paris and charcoal is marked, and in point of durability, absorbent eflicacy, and molecular consistency, the tablet will overcome theobnoxious flow of nicotin in the pipe in which it is used, to the outlet of the pipe stem. It will be noticed that the tablet 4 is provided with a pluarlity of peripheral recesses designated 5 the purpose of which is to enable the smoke of the tobacco to pass therethrough into the stem 3 of the pipe but not of sufficient width to allow the burned tobacco to find an opening. In consequence the smoke may be drawn through the recesses but the consumed tobacco will lie upon the tablet and its nicotin absorbed.
While the above ingredients are most adaptable for the purpose described as far as I am aware, still I do not wish to limit myself thereto, as any ingredients having the same qualities may be used, neither do I limit myself to the form of tablet shown or to a tablet at all, for that matter, as the ingredientsmay be used in the form of a powder if desired, a pinch being dropped into the bowl of the pipe before every smoke.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent; j
A nicotin arrester for a pipe composed of an admixture of plaster of Paris with charcoal formed into atablet, said tablet arranged to be held in the bowl of the pipe and having a plurality of peripheral recesses for communication with the stem of the pipe.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL ALEXANDER REED.
