SEWING-RACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 1912.
Application filed December 14, 1910. Serial No. 597,274.
To all whom-it may concern:
Be it known that I, LILLIE JENNINGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lamont, in the county of Grant and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in Sewing-Racks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to sewing racks and has for its object the production of a rack which is provided with several receptacles formed thereon so as to support the different devices used in sewing in a convenient position.
Another object of this invention is the production of a sewing rack which is provided with a scissors compartment of special construction, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Other objects and advantages of the device will also be pointed out in the following specification and claim.
In the drawings Figure-1 is a central vertical section of the rack. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of one side of the body of the rack. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan view of the body of the rack showing the slot formed therein for receiving the transversely extending member of the scissors rack. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of the end member adapted to support the transversely extending member of the scissors rack.
Referring to the drawings by numerals 1 designates the body of the rack which carries at its lower end a button case 2, and a scissors case 3 positioned above said button rack. A spool shelf 4 'is placed just above the scissors rack and the needle case 5 is secured near the top of the rack just above the spool rack. Positioned upon either side of the needle case 5 are thimble shelves 6. Each thimble shelf is provided with an upwardly extending pin 7 adapted to receive a thimble. A plurality of projecting members S are also carried by the spool shelf and these projections 8 are adapted to support the spools thereon. It will be obvious that from this specific arrangement the articles which are necessary in sewing will be readily at hand, and within easy reach of the user.
The body 1 is provided intermediate its ends and near each side with a longitudinally extending groove 9, which grooves 9 are connected by means of a transversely extending groove .10. Groove 10 is provided with an upper beveled wall 11, and a lower beveled.
wall 12. The inner wall 13 is substantially straight and is adapted to be engaged by the lower end. 14 of the transversely extending member 15 of the scissors case. End members 16 are adapted to engage the transversely extending member 15 of the scissors case and these end members 16 are provided upon their rear edges with longitudinally extending ribs or tongues 17, which tongues are adapted 'to fit in the grooves 9. The lower end of the tongue 17 projects below the body portion of the end members as at 18 and is provided with a lower beveled edge 19 adapted to rest against the lower beveled edge 12 of the transversely extending groove 10. In this way it will be obvious that since the lower end of the tongue 17 conforms to the pitch of the lower wall 12, and since the upper end of the tongue 17 will firmly bear against the upper end of the slot 9, that the end member 16 will be firmly held within the groove. Of course, when the end memher 16 is placed within the groove 9, the
lower beveled end is first inserted in the slot so as to engage the wall 12 and by forcing the upper end of the tongue 17 into the slot, the end member will then be firmly 'held. The outer side of the end member 16 is inclined downwardly as shown in Fig. 5, and a groove 20 is formed near this inclined edge and is adapted to receive a tongue formed upon the ends of the transversely extending member 15. After the end members 16 are placed'in position and the transversely extending member 15 is inserted in the transversely extending groove 10, it will be obvious that the lower edge of the transversely extending member '15 will be firmly seated within the groove 10, and the lower end of the outer edge of the member 15 will engage the lower inclined wall 12 of the groove 10 and the lower end of the inner face of the transversely extending member 15 will engage the upper wall 11 of the groove 10. In this way it will be obvious that any downward pressure upon the member 15 will be greatly resisted through the peculiar construction of the groove 10 as above specified.
A transversely extending groove 22 is formed above the scissors case and is adapted to receive the tongue 23 of the spool rack 4, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
The needle case 5 is provided with a pocket
