CATTLE-GUARD.
To all whom t may concern r Be it known that I, EARL C. FnAs'rEn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Skedee, in the county of Pawnee and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cattle-Guards, of which the following is a specification;
rIbis invention relates to improvements in cattle guards, the primary object being to provide a device of this character which is simple, which may be cheaply manufactured and which may be readily positioned between or adjacent railway rails.`
The invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrange ment of parts, all of which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a top plan view of a section of track with the improved gate applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view but showing the gate open. Fig.4 is a bottom plan view of the improvement removed from the tracks.
As illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, it will be noted that one of the gates is arranged between the railroad tracks while smaller gates are positioned adjacent the outer sides of the said tracks. The details of construction of all of the gates are similar, so reference characters referring to one may be understood as applicable to the remaining gates.
The improvement contemplates, primarily, a substantially rectangular box or casing designated by the numeral 1. This casing is provided with a platform 2, the said platform having its under face provided with spaced registering bearings 3, the said bearings receiving the transversely arranged shafts 4 and 5. Each of these shafts have their ends, beyond the said bearings 3, bent at an angle and have their extremities also bent as at 5 in a plane substantially parallel with what may be termed the bodies of the said shafts or those portions which are mounted within the bearings 3. The extensions 5 are received within suitable open-v ings provided by segmental members 6, the said members 6 being mounted for rotation upon the frame 1 through the medium of transversely extending rods 7 and 8. rods are provided with collarsl 9 which are arranged between the segmental members and the sides of the casing, so. as to prevent the said segments from contacting with the saidI casing. The oppositely arranged pairs of the segments are connected together through the medium of pivoted bars 10 and the segments adjacent one end of the casing are further provided with pivoted links 11, the said links having their extremities mounted in suitable bearings provided upon the ends of longitudinally extending members 12 of the gate 13, The members 12, directly above their connection with links 11 are formed with suitable openings, the same adapted to receivea transversely arranged axle 14, and the said axle passes through suitable openings provided in the sides of .the rectangular casing 1, and adjacent one of the ends of the said casing. rIhis axle 14; is provided with collars 15, the said collars facing the longitudinal members 12 of the gate away from the sides of the casing, and the gate 18 is of a weight sufficient to normally sustain the platform 2 in a plane parallel with the upper edge of the rectangular casing 1. The `gate 13, however, is susceptible to an upward movement upon its axle 14 when the slightest pressure is exerted upon the platform 3, so it will be obvious that an animal attempting to cross the track will, upon contacting the platform, raise the gate, and thus prevent the said animal passing down the track. Immediately when the weight of the animal is removed from the platform, the gate descends by gravity to its normal position.
I-Iaving thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. A cattle guard including a substantially rectangular frame, segmental members arranged in pairs and pivoted adjacent the longitudinal sides of the frame, bars connecting each of the segmental members upon each side of the frame, a platform positioned within the frame to be guided thereby and arranged above the segmental members, angular shafts mounted in bearings upon the platform and connected with the segmental members, a pivoted gate upon the frame, and links connected with the segments nearest the said gate and secured to the gate below its pivot.
2. In a cattle guard, a substantially rectangular frame having its longitudinal sides projecting beyond one of its transverse conand guided thereby, shafts v journaled `in bearings provided upon the under face of` the platform, said shafts having angular ends, a pair of rods arranged transversely of the frame and mounted in bearings in t-he side of the frame below the platform, segmental members upon the shafts adjacent the longitudinal sides of the platform, said segmental v members being provided With openings adapted to serve as bearings for the offset ends of the shafts, a pivoted bar connecting each pair of the segmental members upon each of the sides of the frame, an
