IMPROVEMEN T IN PENCILSHARPENERS.

It consists of a cylinder, or other suitably-shaped block of wood or metal, which is out beveling on one side only. l y

A holeis made longitudinally through the block, through which the pencil is thrust. A loosely revolving spring is arranged about the hole, which clasps the pencil and allows it to revolve inside the block.

- A knife is-used to sharpen the pencil, the bevel of the block guiding it in cutting the wood and sharpening the point.

In order to niore fully illustrate and explain my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specilication, in which- Figure l is a side View.

Figure 2 is a longitudinal section.

A represents a cylindrical or other shaped block of wood, metal, hard rubber, or other suitable material, having sufficient solidity to prevent the sharp blade of a knifefrom readily cutting it. l

This block of wood or other material isperforated,

longitudinally, with a hole, a, which is of snfcient diameter to .easily admit the largest size of pencil or crayon Wbichvit may be necessary or desired to sharpen.

Inside Vof the hole ,-at any convenient point, I placea loosely moving clasp-spring, b, shown at lig. 2. In the present instance, this spring consists of' a small roll of spring metal, havinga flange at each end, which confines it inside of a small chamber. lhis chamber is grooved out around the holea of just suf-l icient width to admit the spring and allow it to move freely around. f

The spring must be capable of expansion, so as to admit the different sizes `of pencils and clasp each firmly, so as to cause them both to turn in conjunction inside the ,cylinder or other block A.

The block A is beveled o on one side, e, soasto furnish a guide for the Aknife in giving a regularv and proper taper to. the point of the pencil, which is turned in the block by the lingers to present its different sides to the knife'iu succession. l

The device is cheap, useful, and convenient, and can ybe used by any persons, even children.

Having thus described my invention,

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
