FENCE-POST.
Specication of Letters Patent.
l Patented May 28,1912.
Application led February 5, 1912. Serial No. 675,517.
To all whom t may concern.
Be it known that I, WALTER C. GAMBREL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tabor, in the county of Dewitt and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in concrete structure, and relates particularly to fence posts.
The invention has for its primary object a durable and eiiicient construction of post designed especially for use at the corner of a fence and so constructed and reinforced that it will be firmly held in the ground and eifectively resist the strain of the line wires.
The invention aims to generally improve this class of devices and to render them more useful and commercially desirable.
With this and other objects in view as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions and arrangement of parts that I shall hereinafter more fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and drawings in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved fence post; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, partly broken away; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view, the section being taken approximately on the line 3 3 of orresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the accompanying drawing by like reference characters.
My improved fence post is constructed of concrete and is formed with a vertically extending rear edge 2, parallel side faces 3, a sloping front edge i which terminates at its lower end in a vertical front edge 5a and at its upper end in a vertical front face 5. The body of the post may be surmountedfby any desired form of cap 6.
The bottom of the post is formed with'a plurality of preferably right-angular recesses 7 the same being arranged in stepped relation to each other, the higher recess being located contiguous to the front edge 5a. At this edge `of the post I form laterally extending brace arms 8 which are integral parts of the main body portion of the post and which preferably extend equal distances on opposite sides of the edge of face 5a, as best illustrated in Fig. 3.
The body portion of the post is preferably reinforced by longitudinally extending wires 11 which may be of any desired number. The post is provided at its bottom and at the rear thereof with any desired number of substantially pear-shaped downwardly and outwardly projecting anchoring members 10, and preferably the reinforcing wires 11 extend downward into these concrete anchoring members.
In placing my improved post in position, a stepped opening is dug in the earth, and after the opening has been formed, further openings are formed by an auger or similar instrument for the reception of the anchoring members 10. It is to be understood that the post is embedded in the earth at least to the upper surface of the laterally extending brace members 8.
From the foregoing description in connection with .fthe accompanying drawing, it will be seen that I have provided a post which when secured in the ground will eifectively withstand the action of the elements and also the strain which is imposed thereon by the line wires. These may be secured to the post in any desired way. In practical use, any strain imposed on the body of the post by the line wires 4 will be resisted by the anchoring elements 10, and a movement of the post bodily will be well withstood by the brace members 8 which present a relatively large laterally extending bearing surface to the ground.
While the accompanying drawing illustrates what I believe to be the preferred embodiment of my invention it is to be understood that the invention is not to be limited but that various changes may be made in the construction, arrangement and proportion of parts without departing from the scope of the invention as dened by the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
The herein described concrete fence post provided with a relatively vertical rear face, a front face embodying an intermediate sloping portion and upper and lower vertical end portions, the post being provided at the bottom of the lower end Q l y 1,027,470
portion of the front face witli'laterally eX- In testimony whereof I hereunto nfix my tending bracing members and being formed signature in the presence oit' two witnesses. at lts lower edge with recesses arranged in stepped relation to each other and at the WALTER C GAMBREL' rear end of the bottom with downwardly Witnesses:
and outwardly projecting anchoring mem- J. M. TEAL,
