To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known thatcI, WILLIAM FUI-IR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and I'mproved Bottle-Stopper, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
This invention relates to improvements in bottle stoppers,and particularly to that variety of stoppers which is adapted to prevent refilling of the bottle without injury to the stopper or the bottle.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved structure which will readily permit the fluid in the bottle to'flow therethrough when thebottle is inverted,
but will resist refilling of the bottle at all times.
In carrying out the object of the invention a cylindrical structure of cork or other suitable material is provided which is adapted to fit into the neck of the bottle and which carries a substantially tubular memher formed with a pivotally mounted top designedto be held normally closed by a spring, but adapted to be opened by pres- .sure of the liquid in the bottle thereon, and
by pressure of liquid on a cap-shaped structure pivotally connected to the lid. A surrounding housing is provided which is clamped in place around the bead projecting from the bottle so that the housing cannot be removed without breaking the bottle or unclamping the retaining means.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference in-- dicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section through an embodiment of the invention, the same being shown applied; Fig. 2 is a view similar to that shown in Fig. 1, except that the bottle is shown inverted and the movable parts of the device in their lowered or open position; and Fig. 3 is a detail fragmentary perspective view with certain parts broken away, of the discharge cylinder and surrounding parts.
Referring to the accompanying drawings 1 by numerals, 1 indicates a bottle of any'desired kind having flanges 2 and 3. Fitting into the neck 4 of the bottle 1, is a cylindrical sleeve 5 formed of cork, wood, or other suitable material. The sleeve 5 carries a slightly turned over at 7 for preventing any movement of cylinder 6 independent of sleeve 5. Secured to the discharge tube 6 at a point 8, is a disk-shaped member 9 which in turn is formed integral with, or rigidly secured to, a protecting cap 10. The protectlng cap 10 is formed with a top 11 havlng a plurality of apertures therein for permitting the escape of fluid therethrough, and with a turned over bead 12 at the lower end against which rests the annular projecting flange 13 of the cover 14:, which is preferably formed of glass, although other material may be used. The cover 14 is formed with a neck 15 of any desired size which is adapted to accommodate an ordinary stopper 16 for sealing the bottle when not 1n use. The stopper 16 may be easily applied and removed. A retaining member 17 is provided which is formed with an annular flange 18 fitting over the annular flange 13, and with'a projection 19 which is adapted to be turned over and form an annular flange beneath the bead 2 after the entire device has been placed in position, and after the bottle 1 has been filled so as to lock the stopper in place and against removal. The retaining member 17 is preferably constructed of metal, although the same could be made of glass or other material,
and turned over by being heated for forming the flange or turned over portion 19.
The discharge cylinder 6 is formed with an outwardly flaring upper portion 20 to which is hinged a cover or lid 21. A spring 22 is arranged to continually press against the cover 21 for normally holding the same closed, but adapted to permit the free flow.- ing of liquid from the bottle when the bottle is inverted. However, the spring 22 is discharge tube or cylinder 6 which is designed to close the lid 21 when the bottle lying on its side, or substantially in that position. In order to positively open the lid 21at the correct time and also to close .it, a pair of cups 23 and 2 1 are provided, and secured rigidly but reversely on a rod 25 which is pivotally mounted at 26 to the lid 21. The lid 21 is provided with a substantially arc-shaped stop 27 adapted to engage the edge of the flaring portion 20 when the lid is open, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
When the bottle is inverted, or substantially inverted, as shown in Fig. 2, the liquid in the bottle will fill the cup 28 and will also press against the lid 21, whereby the lid will be opened and the liquid permitted to freely flow into the cap 10, and from thence out the housing 15. After the desired quantity of liquid has been removed from the bottle, the bottle is moved to an upright position which will cause some of the liquid in the discharge sleeve to enter the cup 24, whereby the weight of the same will pull downward upon the cover 21 and assist the spring 22 in closing and holding the cover closed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent p 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a bottle formed with a bead on the neck thereof, a discharge sleeve arranged in said neck, a lid pivotally mounted on said sleeve for normally closing said sleeve, a cup pivotally connected with said lid for normally holding the same closed, a protecting cap surrounding the upper end of said sleeve and said lid, a fragile cover surrounding said cap, and a locking member engaging said cover and the bead on said neck for positively locking said cover and associated parts to said neck.
2. In a device of the character described, a discharge sleeve arranged to project into the neck of a bottle, a lid pivotally mounted on said sleeve, a cup pivotally connected with said cover adapted to receive a part of the contents of said bottle either when the bottle is inverted or upright, whereby said cup will be caused to positively open and close said lid, a protecting cover for said lid and said sleeve, and means engaging said protecting cover and the neck of said bottle for positively locking said cover in position.
3. In a device of the character described, a discharge sleeve arranged to project into the neck of the bottle, a pivotally mounted lid adapted to normally close said discharge sleeve, a substantially arc-shaped projection extending through. said lid and over part of said sleeve when the lid is closed, said arcshaped projection being adapted to engage said sleeve when the lid is open for limiting the amount of opening of the lid, means continually tending to hold in a closed condition said lid, a protecting cap surrounding the upper part of said sleeve and rigidly secured thereto for positively holding the same in position, a cover substantially surrounding said protecting cap, and a double flanged locking member engaging said cover and a head on the neck of said bottle for positively locking said cover in place.
