HAME-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, PATRICK F. MoCRoNn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Hame-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hame fasteners, and has for its object to provide a simple, etlicient and durable device of this character, this invention being an improvement over the hame fastener shown in Patent No.
502,176, issued July 27, 1893.
\Vith the above and other objects in view, this invention is embodied in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a pair of the hame fasteners attached to a hame, parts shown in section and parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the lower hame fastener. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 1 is a section on the line 44 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the members of the fastener.
Referring specifically to the drawings, the hames are designated as 6-6 and the same are provided at the ends thereof with the usual links 7.
Each of the hame fasteners which are used to connect the upper and lower ends of the hames consists of two curved members 8 and 11 having their outer ends hooked to engage the respective links 7. Split cotter pins 10 are passed through the ends of the hooked portions of the said members to retain the hooks from being disengaged from the links. The members 8 and 11 are secured together in a novel manner for the purpose of adjustment, which will be presently described.
The inner member 11 is provided with a dove-tailed channel 12 extending to its inner end and at the bottom of the channel is arranged a series of splayed notches 13 in the form of a rack. The other or outer member 8 has the inner end thereof of dovetailed cross section and fitting within the dovetailed channel of the inner member, thus permitting a sliding movement between the two members but constraining each of the members against lateral displacement. The inner end of the member 8 is bifurcated and the ends of the bifurcation are connected by a bridge-piece 19. WVithin the bifurcated end is pivoted a pawl or dog 14 by means of a suitable pin 18, and a leaf spring 15 secured to the outer face of the member 8 has the free end thereof bearing against the inner end of the pawl or dog to give an inward tension thereto. The pawl or dog l-fl is in the form of a lever wherein the inner end thereof is adapted to engage the splayed notches 13 and the outer end thereof is bent outwardly as designated at 17. The pawl being pivoted in the bifurcated end of the member 8, permits the spring 15 to bear on the inner end thereof to give an inward tension thereto and the end 17 thereof is bent over the outer side of the said bridge member to permit the same to be pressed inwardly to disengage the pawl from the splayed notches.
The fasteners at the upper and lower ends of the hames are identical in form and construction with the exception of a fingerpiece 16 which is extended from the bridge portion 19 of the lower member 8. This fingerpiece is curved away from the end 17 of the corresponding pawl.
The fasteners are secured to the hames in the ordinary manner, the upper fastener be ing secured in position and the lower fastener then being secured to the lower end of the hame. The upper fastener is first suitably adjusted, the members thereof being capable of being distended by pressing inward the end 17 of the pawl 14 which disengages the pawl from the splayed notches 13. Upon releasing the pawl 14 the same engages the notches preventing the members from being drawn apart and permitting same to be forced together. The lower fastener is adjustable in the same manner and the adjustment thereof is facilitated by the finger-piece l6 serving as a means to draw the two members together. In the lower fastener the fingerpiece 16 also assistsin ease of disengaging the pawl 1 1 for the reason that when the fingers are engaged with the said fingerpiece, the thumb can be forced against the end 17 of the pawl to readily disengage same to allow the two members to be separated or distended.
These fasteners can be made of any suitable material and design, the same not being of any particular moment.
What is claimed as new is:
1. A hame fastener comprising two members, one of the said members having a dovetailed channel on its inner end and a series of splayed notches in the bottom of the channel, and the other member having the inner end thereof of dovetailed cross section and fitting into said channel, the inner end of the latter member being bifurcated and the end of the bifurcation being connected by a bridge portion which is extended into a curved fingerpiece, a pawl pivoted within the bifurcated end of the said memher, the inner end thereof being adapted to other, one of the said members having a series of notches and the inner end of the other member being bifurcated and the end of the bifurcation being connected by a bridge portion, a pawl pivoted within the bifurcated end of the said member, the inner end of the pawl being adapted to engage in the said .notehes and the outer end thereof being bent outwardly over the outer side of the bridge portion, and a leaf spring secured to the outer face of the latter member and engaging the inner end of the pawl to give an inward tension to same.
