Specification of Letters Patent. Application flied my 1 191 I I i. come.
all whom it may concern.
Be it known that l, Jenn A. Wiinonf citizen of the United States, residing at Golumbus. in the county of Cherokee and State of Kansas, have invented newra nd useful Improvements in Bedstezids. of wbich the following is a specification,
The general object of the invention is to provide at bed that may be lmockeddown and folded into a con'ipnrntively small co1npass when not in use.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from the following description taken n connection with the accompanying in which,
b I is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is on zvalion of the head'end of the bed. I is 22 detail perspective of one end por-- lion oi the bed showing in is for locking the spring against displacement. Fig. a sectional detail tlie'meane for locking the sprin i n detail perspective o'l one-"end poi the stay bar showing the sonic corni ected to one of the supporting: le s. igidisc front elevation of one end porfon tbeetey bar shown in l" 3. ibut with the leg' reinoved. Fig. 7 is toil side elevation with the parts partl 8 i: a similar view of the ports completelv oldcd. I
"The s a and end rn'ile l are prci embly though not necessarily formed of metal and are berein slioivn as right angular in cross sectional contour but it must be 1 understood that .l um'not to be liinitedto tire specificnse of metal or the cross sec till . ticnal contour shown and described since these details be varied if desiredend .berein shown and described merely to an able those elrilled in the ar to clearly unde stand one erxflnriiment of the invention; In order that the bed may be readily folded or collapsed it form the side raile a in sections and 6', the said section. of each rail may be connected together in any preferred manner such as by c. rule-joint i the sections of each rail necled to the manner such as by pivot "pins 8. The sec tions 5 and G of each rail ire adapted to told one upon the other eboivn in Fig. "I and when so adjusted the need and the curl reiis Will bear one upon the other Where ....Cl:10.l1 il,: ll:il, be cbserved' tlmt the sen and" may be further 0on end rails 71 m any preferred Patented ll toy .ld, 1M2.

times comprising the side end end mils are of uniform size-in cross section, and also the sections 5 and 6 move in a direction when folding one upon the other at right angles tothe direction in which the side rails move when folding one upon the other and on to the end mils. It will be also observed that the side rails are of different lengths and at the juncture of the side and'end rails angular shaped brackets t9 iireprovided which are herein shown as Secured to the end rails and connected by the pivots 8, before stated, to the side rails. lit will be observed that the brackets connecting the shorter side rail with the end rails ere longer than the opposite brackets connecting the longer side rail, the length of the longer brackets being 5511f.- ficient to permit the shorter side rail to be folded on to the longer when folded on to the end rails es; shown. iirFig. 6.
The supporting legs 0 arranged at the opposite ends and middle bed, the loge 10 at the foot end of the bed being herein shown as angular in cross section and pivoted to the foot mi! and foldable on to the latter. Suitable latches 11 are pivoted to the legs 10 and are adopted to interlock with keepers 12 end cooperate with. the same to hold the legs 10 against movement when the bed is set up and ready for use.'
The middle-legs 13 are herein shown as angular and pii'oted to and adapted to be folded onto the side rails. Suitable latches with keepers prevent m0ve- 13 being accomplishedin any suitable mo nor such as by studs 17 arranged at tne op};
stops 18 are arranged on the bar 16 end adapted to bear .on the adjacent edges of the legs; 13, and latches 19 herein shown. as pivotedjto the/Stops 18 and movable over one face of tlielegs 13 when the'ber connect thereto whereby to prevent "uccii den. t displacement of the bar the latter is i when the bed is set up og connection between tbebar'lfiand 1e posite' ends of tl cfbur, 1 6 and edapted toenter openings in thelege l3. Suitable portion of the latcafrried by one of the sections of'the side ctr-lie side sections Clio - The legs 20 at the head end of the bed are herein shown as pivotally connected to and adapted to told on to the head rail when. the bed has beenfolded as previously described. In order to prevent folding of the legs when the bed is set up I make use of a headpiece herein shown to consist of depending portions 21 connected at their upper ends by a. crosapicce and having ofi'set portions 23 at their lower ends provided with studs 24 received by bayonet slots in the legs 20. The cross-bar 22 is pivoted to the portions 21 whereby the latter may be folded on to the former when not in use. The portions 21 are adapted to interlock with the head rail in any preferred manner such as by means of studs having shank portions 26 adapted to enter notches 27 in the head rail, the cross-piece 22 is also adapted to interlock with the head rail in any preferred manner such as by means of a latch 28 adapted to engage a keeper '29 carried by the head rail.
It will be observed that the -le s are formed with shoulder 30 which'bsar on the side and end rails whereby the-tweight of the parts is not thrown on to tliepivots of the legs. V y
In connection with the bed just described I make use of the spring 31. The body of this element comprises a plurality ofi links 32 arranged end to end and connected by eyes. 83 the eyes being in turn connected by cross-links 34. The body is connected to the end bars 35 and 36 by means of retractile springs' 'i-l7 and the bars and 36 are adapted to interlock with hooks 38 and 39 secured, to the end rails as shown. The bars 35 and 36 have recesses 40 which receive the bills of the hooks 138 and 39 and the said bars are herein shown as corresponding substantially in width to the horizontal side portions of the end rails so that in order to connect the bars with tlije hooks it is necessary to slightly tilt the same in order that the bills of the hooks may enter the recesses of the bars. In order to prevent accidental engagementbetween the bars and hooks T make use of a locking device one embodiment of which is herein shown to consist: of lovers 4) pivoted to the end rails and adapted to be moved outwardly and under clips 4.3 carried by the bars 35 and 36 after engagement between the latter and the "hooks has been efi'ectcd. With this construction it. will be seen that when the levers and clips hear one upon the other it will be impossible to tilt the bars sutiiciently to disengage the same from the hooks.
The spring previously described is somewhat less in length than the distance between the hooks at the opposite end rails and one method oftensioning the spring mnsists in first connecting one of the bars with the hooks of one end rail and then partly folding the side rails so as to bring the hooks of the opposite end rail nearer to the hooks of the first named end rail in which position the other bar may be readily connected to the hooks and lock as previously described, after which the sections may be moved. into alinement whereupon the spring will be tensioncd.
Assuming that the bed has been set 11 and it is desired to fold the same the hca piece is first removed by disengaging the latch 28 with the keeper 29, after which the head-piece is moved upwardly in the bayonet slots 25 until the portions 21 may be moved inwardly and out of engagement with the side slots whereupon the head-piece may be removed. The latches 14 are then disengaged from the middle legs 13 whereupon the sections of the side rails may be partly folded thus removing the tension on the spring and permitting the same to be detached from the hooks which may be accomplished first by moving the levers 42 from engagement with the members 43. When the spring has been removed the sections 5 and 6 of each side rail are folded one upon the other, after which the legs are folded on to the side and end rails, it being understood that the latches of the foot end legs are first disengaged from their keepers. When this has been done the parts will be positioned as shown in Fig. 7 after which the side rails may be folded one upon the other as previously described whereupon the entire structure when folded will be of no greater length than one of the end rails. By virtue of the flexibility of the spring the latter may be wrapped around the folded bed and the whole packed into a 105 small box or receptacle.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the device is exceedingly simple in structure and has a minimum of parts and is particularly adapted for use in camps, 110 households, etc.
Although I. have shown and described one vform of the device it is to he understood that I am not to be limited to this specific structure and arrangement of parts since 11.5 various changes may be made, in the scope of the appendwl claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
lVhat I claim as. new is:
1. In a collapsible bed, the combination of end rails, side rails inc uding pivotally connected sections pivoted to the end rails, each of said side sections being foldablc one upon the other and also toldnble parallel to 125 the end rails.
2. In a collapsible bed. the combination of end rails, side rails including pivotally connected sections pivoted to the end rails, said side rails being foldablc one upon the 13 other and also foldable onto and par-Lille spring; hm'ing endv bars to engage saidhooke with the end rails. and cooperating devnes "Ciifiiid by the end 3. In a COHH PSlblG bed, the combination t rails and end bars: mid adapted for looking of end rails, side rails including pivotally the end bars against dis iueement from connected sections pivoted to the end rails hooks. said side I ails being foldahle one upon the in testimony whereof I afiix my signature other and also foldable onto and pa'aliei in presence of two witnesses. with the end mils, and Supporting legs piv' otally connected to said side and end mile and foldable thereonio.
