To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ADOLF SCHWIEGER, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Hanover, in Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Combined Cigar-Cutter and Fastener for Cigar- Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention consists in an improved device of the type combining the functions of cigar cutter and fastener for acigar receptacle.

The objectof the invention is to provide an eficient device of this type which is very simple, compact and cheap, and the invention provides a device which essentially comprises only a single slotted cutting lever and a tongue engaging the slot, this lever having a catch for engaging the receptacle lid and being slidable at its pivot so that in a certain position, when the said catch is in engagement, the said tongue can be caused to enter a portion of the slot in which it looks the lever and thus fastens the receptacle.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a rear view of the device, in its open position, and Fig. 2 a similar view showing the cutter depressed, but the fastener not in operation. Fig. 3 is a rear view showing the fastener locked, and Fig. 4: is a side view showing the device fitted to the front wall of a cigar box, and in open position. Fig. 5 is aperspective view of the device and cigar box.

The combined fastener and cutter comprises a support a to which a cutting lever 6 having a circularly curved knife edge 0 is pivoted by means of a stud cl working in a slot 6. The lever b has a roughly sectorshaped part f with a slot h by means of which the lever is engaged with a projection g fixed to the support a, the said slot is curved and has at its upper end a lateral enlargement 2'. When the projection or tongue 9 is introduced into this part 2' of the slot by pushing the part f of the lever Z) toward the pivot d, the cutter is locked so that it cannot be rotated about the pivot, until the lever 72 has been pushed back so that the tongue is again in the curved part of the slot h. Moreover, while the tongue 9 is in the enlargement or aperture 2' the lever serves as a fastening for the cigar receptacle B to which the device is fixed. For this purpose the lever b has at its upper edge a lug or catch 70, and the support a is so fixed to the front wall of the receptacle that when the cutter b is locked as described the said lug engages and holds down the lid O. The lug 71 also serves as a handle for manipulating the cutter.

The support a is provided at its upper edge with a semi-circular cutting edge 1" adapted to coact with the cutting edge 0 of the lever b, for shearing off cigar-tips, which fall into the receptacle B. The supporting plate a has lugs m n at its upper edge for engaging the front wall of the receptacle, and the plate has sharp tongues 0 70 adapted to be forced into the front wall of the receptacle, for fixing the plate.

The support a is provided with a frame Q for displaying advertisements or decorative matter; advertisements, views or the like may be permanently fixed in this frame, or may be removable so that they can be changed.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A combined cigar cutter and receptacle fastener comprising a support, a slotted cutting lever pivoted to said support so as to be slidable at the pivot, a catch on said lever, and a tongue fixed to said support and engaging the slot in said lever, said slot having a lateral enlargement placed so that in one position of the lever the latter can be slid on its pivot so as to engage the tongue with said enlargement and lock the lever to the support.

A combined cigar cutter and receptacle fastener comprising a support, "tongues on said support adapted to engage a cigar receptacle, a slotted cutting lever pivoted to said support so as to be slidable at the pivot, a catch on said lever, and a tongue fixed to said support and engaging the slot in said lever, said slot having a lateral enlargement placed so that in one position of the lever the latter can be slid on its pivot so as to engage the tongue with said enlargement and lock the lever to the support.

A combined cigar cutter and receptacle fastener comprising a support, a frame fixed to said support adapted for holding advertisements and the like, a slotted cutting lever pivoted to said support so as to be slidable at the pivot, a catch on said lever, and a tongue fixed to said support and engaging the slot in said lever, said slot having a lateral enlargement placed so that in one position of the lever the latter can be slid on its pivot so as to engage the tongue with said enlargement and lock the lever to the support.

4. A combined cigar cutter and receptacle fastener comprising a support, having a cutting edge, a slotted cutting lever pivoted to said support so as to be slidable at the pivot, a catch on said lever, and a tongue fixed to said support and engaging the slotin said lever, said slot having a lateral enlargement placed so that in one position of the lever the latter can be slid on its pivot so as to engage the tongue with said enlarge ment and lock the lever to the support.
