columns of H and I cross section with parallel flanges, and embraces the devices employed for the production of the desired H or I shaped sections with parallel flanges and the construction of the rolling mill for the same purpose.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view of a niill, partially in section, and partially in elevation to illustrate the arrangement of the first set of rolls. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2-2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the set of rolls shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view illustrating a balancing device for the horizontal shafts. (3, T, and 8 illustratev conventionally the several sets of rolls between which the bar passes. Fig. 9 is a detail vertical section on the line 9-9 of Fig. 10. Bars of H and I cross section with parallel flanges are in the first place rolled out in bent up form from rectangular blocks by means of a four roller block rolling mill whose rollers are adjustable on all sides from one point as shown in Figs. 13 and Fig. 5 of the drawings, this rolling being carried out in such a manner that the side rolling faces of the vertical rollers b penetrate into the shorter sides of the block being rolled and are inclined to each other at as acute an angle as possible between and 90, while the horizontal rollers b which lie in the same plane simultaneously work into the longer side of the block. By further rolling in following sets of rollers the corners of the block are rolled out and broadened. As the pass of the four rollers is open atthe four corners the edges of the flanges are not operated upon so that nothing stands in the way of their free extension. After this H profile has been rolled out in the manner hereinbefore described,

the bar is placed between a set of rollers of the kind illustrated in Fig. 6, which for convenience of arrangement is constructed in the same manner as the four roller block rolling mill of Fig. 1 of the drawings. One difl'erence however consists in that the roll ing faces of the side rollers b intersect each other at an angle lying between 120 to 135. By adjusting the four rollers which may be effected from one point by a motor, the rollers are caused to uniformly approach each other and the H profile rolled out to the desired size.
The working of the edges is accomplished by means of the pair of rollers shown in Fig. 7, which may be before or behind the.
last described set of rollers and are capable of being adjusted simultaneously in known manner. These rollers consist of a central art 6 having an undercut side roller face :9 on each side whereby a free space a: is formed which allows of the thickening of the ends of the flanges produced by the rolling'of the metal. Each of the side rolling faces 3; is inclined in such a manner that the angle between it and the flange is somewhat less than 90 whereby bending together 0 the flanges is avoided.
After the bar has been provided with the bent up section and its edges worked upon as described, it is passed through the straightening rollers of Fig. 8. The latter also consist in a set of four rollers-namely, the horizontal rollers b and the vertical rollers bwhich are adjustable on all sides by means of pressure screws, and in which the section is straightened up.
The sets of .four rollers have roller standards 2, cast laterally on which are inclosed standard heads a in which are arranged the mountings for the vertical rollers which are shown more in detail in Figs. 9, 10, and 11. The mounting a carries the vertical roller b which latter is journaled therein in the bearing 0. At its upper and lower sides the mounting is provided with guide flanges d in which are arranged the adjusting screws e. The points of these latter are let into the sliding fillets f to prevent their wearing away. The screw heads are provided with flanges g on which a securing plate 7:. with hexagonal holes corresponding in size to the screw heads is laid. By means of these adjusting screws the vertical rollers are adjustable in vertical direction.
The mounting is connected with the end of the horizontal 1'( $lll't! screw .s by means of a head on the pre sure screw which is embedded in a suitably formed rece s in a cross piece whichlis formed in two parts held together by screws L". This cross piece is also ('Uhtltt'tttl to the mounting (I- by means I of two adjusting crews I having retaining l'()ll:lt likewise embedded in the cross piece. in order to prevent the tendency of the (Turn piece to bend it is'supported near the pres ure screw by means: of a wedge in. By means of this ]|r-tl'tl(llt)n the vertical rollers can be tltljll l0l in a horizontal direction.
The upper horizontal roller is suspended by means of suspensory screws 7/. (see Fig. 3) from two cro s pieces a which are journaled on the head of the vertical pressure screws i. which suspcusory screws connect the bearing forks r of the ,rollers with the cross pieces. ()n the top of the vertical pres sure screw is situated a roller on which is wound up a cord 1; supporting the index bob (1 of a scale 0 for the adjustment of the rollers. This cord passes over two further rollers f to the scale situated on one of the roller standards 2'. on which scale the index bob iiulicatcs the amount of movement of the pressure screw and gives lllfOlllttltlUI] of the position or distance apart of the rollers.
The rollers are adjusted simultaneously by means of the shaft. which carries bevel wheels 23 and l. and worn'is 5 and 6. The bevel wheels 3 and 4 gear with the bevel wheels 7 and S mounted on shafts 9 and 10 respectively, and the worms operate the screws it through spiral gearing 1S and It). The shaft 9 carries a worm 11 which operates one of the screws 5' through spiral gearing 13, and the shaft 10. in a. similar manner. operates the other pressure screw by means of a worm t2. The shaft 10 drives, by means of bevel wheels H, and' 1.7, the lia't't 16 which carries wori'us t7 and 20 op crating the pressure screws of the lower horizontal roller through spiral gearing 22 and 21.
As the two horizontal 'rollersot the set of four rollers are simult'aneously adjusted. it is necessary to provide the driving spindles 1:
and 0 with a suitable balancing device as shown in Fig. 4. For this purpose the lowel driving spindle 0 is somewhat heavier than the upper one a. At the upper partof both side checks of the spindle bracket 9 are mounted two fixed rollers p. The brackets g for the bearing forks r of both driving spindles are connected to each other on both sides by means of a Wire rope or chain, which passes over the fixed roller p and which possesses an adjusting device. The somewhat heavier lower driving spindle 0 hits up the upper one, so that these both move automatically when adjusting the horizontal rollers.
In order to introduce work pieces of varying breadth of flange (which may be between 200 and T00 millimeters), into the pass of the set of four rollers or that of edge rolling rolls at the correct height it is necessary that the sets of rolls adjacent thereto vshould he adjustable in order to facilitate the entry of the bar being rolled.
Having now described my invention what claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is in a method of rolling girders, columns, and the like pieces of H and I cross section with parallel flanges, passing a blank consisting of a block of rectangular cross section through a four roller block rolling mill whose rollers are adjustable on all sides and whose passes are open at the four corners, and in which the block is given a cross section with flanges inclined to each other at 00" to 90 passing the bar through a second similar set. of rolls in which the flanges are flattened out to 120 to 135 operating upon the edges of the flanges in another set of rolls; and straightening out the flanges and finishing the bar in a final setof four rollers with cylindrical vertical rollers.
