TOOL-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed September 22, 1910. Serial No. 583,237.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN D. PATNAUDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manchester, in the county of Hillsboro and State of New Hampshire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tool-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a tool holder and more particularly to that class of tool holder especially adapted for use in lathes, planers, or other like machines.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a holder of this character in which the cutting bits may be readily and quickly clamped therein and also removed for the sharpening thereof without disturbing the position of the holder, thus obviating the necessity of re-adjust-ment thereof when mounted in a machine.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a holder of this character in which different styles or forms of bits or tools may be clamped for the execution of work required by lathes, planers or other like machines.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a holder of this character in which the bits therefor may be adjusted therein independently of the said holder.
Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the hereunto appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of a holder and bit clamped therein constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a similar view looking toward the opposite face. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4- of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the holder. 1
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 5 designates the body of a holder, the same being preferably constructed from metal and is provided with a curvature 6, spaced from one extremity thereof to form an offset end portion 7 with respect to the remaining portion of the said body. This ofiset end portion 7 in one flat face of the body 5 is provided with spaced parallel grooves 8, the outer ends of which open through the end edge of the body, while the inner ends of these grooves 8 intersect the flat face of the body beyond the curvature 6 therein. In either or both of these grooves 8 is adapted to be adj ustably mounted a detachable bit or tool which is formed from a single length of tool steel rod about one fourth inch in cross section. The cutting end of the tool or bit may be made with any desirable shaped points for turning screw threads, some being made V-shaped for turning screw-threads of the usual type, some being squarenosed for turning square threads, others given diamond points for turning steel, others round-nosed for turning cast iron and so forth. In the opposite side edges of the body 5 are suitably spaced threaded apertures in which are adjustably mounted binding screws 11 which engage the bits or tools I to hold the same mounted in the grooves in the holder. At the opposite end of the body 5 in the fiat face containing the said grooves 8 is a further tool receiving groove 12 in which is adjustably mounted a detachable tool or bit 13, the same being held therein by means of binding screws 14 threaded in one side edge of the body and engaged with the said tool or hit.
In using the tool holder the body 5 of the holder is placed in a tool-post of a form frequently used in lathes, planers or the like, and is clamped therein in the desired adjusted position. The tools or bits are adjustably mounted within the grooves in the holder to suit the work to be operated upon by a lathe. It is evident.- that the bit or tool may be readily removed when it is required to re-sharpen the same.
