2 SHEETS- JOHN MCQUAT MACKIE, OF MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
FEED-WATER HEATER.
' Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented Apr. 30, 1912- Application filed June 25, 1907f Serial No. 380,822.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, JOHN 'MC'QUAT hlAOKIE, of the city of'Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed- Water Heaters; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention consists of the construction and combination of'parts hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims and for full comprehension thereof reference must be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar reference characters indicate the same parts and wherein,
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View of a feed water heater constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2 is a part elevation and part sectional view of the feed water receptacle removed; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line A A Fig. 1;
Fig. t is a longitudinal sectional view of a modified arrangement ofmy improved apparatus; and Fig. 5 is an-end view thereof.
The outer casing or shell, as shown in Fig. 1, forming a steam chamber, comprises a cylindrical body portion 7), having flanged ends a and (Z and a pair of openings e, a chambered upper end portion or header H preferably of substantially rectangular cross-section having a flanged rim 7:, a safety valve 25, to avoid any excessive pressure in the casing, and an opening j provided with a stufling box 70,- and a chambered lower end portion or base m having a flanged rim m, a pair of openings 0 and p to accommodate the intake and blow-off pipes of the feed water carrying member, to be presently described, and a drip opening g. The openings e and f are for the connection of steam pipes to provide the steam for heating the water carrying member and the openings 0 and p are provided with stufiing boxes 1* and 1". When, as shown in Fig. 1, the apparatus is arranged vertically, brackets (1, indicated by vertical dotted lines in Fig. 1, are cast upon the interior of the base m for supporting the water carrying member, and such base, and through it the entire apparatus, is supported upon feet S. To meet other requirements, however, as in the case of the apparatus being used horizontally, the brackets a are dispensed with and the feet S located as shown in Fig. 5, while the openings 6 and f are preferably located atdifierent sides of the body portion, also as shown in Fig. 5.
The water carrying member is formed quite independently of the casing and comprises a pair of perforated plates or sheets 4 and 11 each entirely free from contact with the outer casing; water tubes 13 expanded at their opposite ends into the perforations 5 of the plates 4 and 11; chambered caps 2 and 7 carried respectively by each of said plates 4 and 11 and at one end of the member the cap -7 forming part of a water receiving chamber and at the other end of the member the cap 2 forming part of a water delivery chamber 6, and, when the apparatus ls arranged vertically, the cap 7 is provided with a flanged rim 8 (indicated by horizontal dotted lines in Fig. 1) whereby it is supported on the brackets a, previously mentioned, and also to receive the bolts 14 for securing it to the plate 11.
The cap 2, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is preferably arciform in'shape with a flanged rim 3 and a tapped opening 2 and together with the plate 4: constitutes the water delivery chamber 6. If desired thismember 2 may be of substantially rectangular cross- '-section when applied to the horizontal type,
and in some cases the vertical type. The cap 7 at the opposite end of the water carrying. I member, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is,pref
erably of the form shown and. has the flanged rim 8, (before mentioned) a tapped intake opening 9 with (in the vertical'type) an upwardly curved deflector l0 inclosing the lower portion thereof, and to ether with the plate 11, similar to the p ate 4: and formed with a plurality of corresponding openings, forms a water receiving chamber, there being a tapped opening 12 in the extreme lower end of the cap to accommodate a blow oflf pipe hereinafter mentioned. A feed water inlet pipe 15 passes through the stuff.
ing box 7- and the opening 0', in the outer casing, and is screwed rigidly into the opening 9 in the cap 7, and a feed water outlet pipe 16 passes through the stufiing box is and opening 7, in the outer casing, and is screwed into the opening 2 of the cap 2, a.drip pipe 20 bein screwed into the opening 9 and a blow o pipe 21'passed through the stufiing box and opening 72, in the outer casing, and screwed into opening 12 in the cap.
When, as shown in Fig. 5, the apparatus is arranged horizontally the casing is the same as when arranged vertically except that both chambered end portions thereof are of identical form, the supporting feet S and drip 20 are located on the lower side of the cylindrical portion, the safety valve 25 in the upper side thereof, and the steam pipe openings 0 and f located as'shown, while the water carrying member is also substantially the same except that the chambered cap portions are both identical in form and there is no deflector 10 for the inlet opening. v
\Vhat I claim is as follows: I
1. In a feed water heater, the combination of an outer casing forming a steam chamber, and a water carrying member Within the steam chamber; the water carrying member'being formed independently of the casing, removable bodily therefrom without disturbing the steam connections, and comprising a pair of perforated plates or sheets each'entirely free from contact with the outer casing, water tubes having their ends connected with said plates, a chambered cap carried by the plate at one end of the member and forming with such plate a water receiving chamber having .water inlet thereto, and a chambered cap carried by the plate at the other end of the member and forming with such plate a de livery chamber having water outlet therefrom; and the outer casing being composed of abody portion, having steam inlet and outlet openings, and chambered end portions carried by the body port-ion and-provided with openings to allow the connection of water supply and water outlet pipes with the water carrying member.
2. In a feed water heater, the combination of an outer casing constituting a steam heating chamber, and a water carrying member within the heating chamber removable bodily therefrom without disturbing the steam connections; the casing being formed of a flanged cylindrical portion, provided with inlet'and outlet openings for steam, and flanged end caps, identical in form and each havin an opening therein, bolted to the cylindrlcal portion and perforated for the passage of a water pipe thercthrough; the water carrying member being composed of two perforated disk plates or sheets each of a sufficiently smaller diameter than the interior of the casing to leave a free space between its edge and such casing, a plurality of water tubes extending between said disks and secured in the perforations there of, and two identically formed concave headers each of which has an opening therein and is bolted to one of the said disk plates; and water inlet and outlet pipes passing slidably through the openings in the end caps of the casing and tapped into the openings in the headers of the water carrying member, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN McQUAT MAGKIE.
